Joy - Review by Carleton Rutter
Directed by: David O. Russell
Starring: Jennifer Lawrence, Robert De Niro and Bradley Cooper
Genre: Biography, Comedy, Drama
So, in a nutshell?
Joy is the story of a family across four generations and the woman who rises to become founder and matriarch of a powerful family business dynasty.
So, what are my thoughts?
The last time I saw Jennifer Lawrence, she had finally tracked down President Snow in the final lacklustre chapter of The Hunger Games, here the 25 year-old Oscar winner who hails from Louisville, Kentucky is firmly back on solid ground. Joy which is written as well as directed by David O.Russell, marks the third collaboration with Lawrence. The first two projects being Silver Linings Playbook (2012) and American Hustle (2013). The movie also marks the fourth time Lawrence as starred alongside Bradley Cooper.
I'm very glad to say I thoroughly enjoyed Joy. Going in, I really did not know what to expect. The movie is based on the life of Joy Mangano. A mom and housewife who invented the self-wringing Miracle Mop amongst other inventions. It concentrates on her early years as she struggles to get said "mop" launched into the public eye. She faces many barriers and adversities along the way, but ultimately she triumphs and it's great to join her along for the ride.
Front and centre is Jennifer Lawrence who has rightly received a Golden Globe nomination for her portrayal as this gutsy entrepreneur. She will most likely get a nomination for an Oscar next month as well. She is superb in the lead role. Natural and grounded. She is supported by an excellent cast with the likes of Robert De Niro who plays Rudy her Dad and Bradley Cooper as Neil Walker, the TV exec who gives Joy her first break. The movie also features great performances from Diane Ladd as Mimi, Joy's grandmother and stories narrator. Virginia Madsen as Terry, Joy's soap opera obsessed mom and Isabella Rossellini as Trudy, her dad's girlfriend and ultimate investor of Joy's business.
The movie although essentially a drama does have some nice comedic touches to it. It also looks great and has a good soundtrack to it, and I especially liked the use of flashbacks to tell the story of Joy's childhood and how such things as her parents divorce affected who she was and would become.
Joy is ultimately a story of determination and not taking "no" for an answer. It serves as an inspiring story to budding entrepreneurs and start-up businesses to never give up and if you have a dream, keep going towards it until it becomes your reality. It may not sound the most exciting of movies and at times in the middle act things do drag their feet a little, but if you are looking for an inspirational story to start your new year off, you won't go wrong with Joy.
My Rating
4*/5*
I found Joy to be an extremely engaging movie and thanks to not only great direction and writing from O.Russell, but a superb lead turn from Lawrence, I was hooked from start to finish. The movie also looks and sounds great and features and experienced cast who are well used. It's not going to be everyone's cup of tea, but for those of you who take the plunge, I'm sure you will be glad you did.
After somewhat of a roller-coaster year, 2015 finishes off on a positive note - oh Joy!
Joy is released in the UK on January 1st

All Yoda Scenes Comparison - Star Wars The Phantom Menace
A comparison of every scene with Yoda in Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace. The original puppet from 1999 looked awkward and weird and miscolored. So, in one of his more popular changes, Lucas decided to edit in a CGI Yoda for the Blu-ray release.
I, personally, am one of the few people in the world who prefers the original puppet. It was a sign of how Episode I was the perfect blend of practical effects and CGI, before everything went digital.
This also very subtly highlights one of my biggest issues with Yoda in most of the prequel trilogy, in which how serious he is constantly. I think this is best illustrated in the final shot of Yoda at the parade. The Yoda puppet looks happily enjoying the party, while the updated model looks pissed off. In the original Empire, Yoda was introduced as a jokester. He most certainly had a sense of humor, and all throughout the prequels that characterization was missing.
All Yoda does is act frustrated and confused. He doesn't even have many wise lines in all three films. At least with the puppet, there's an illusion of levity to Yoda. But I don't want to analyze too much, its just a comparison video.

Adult beginner violinist - 2 years progress video
"I'm a 24 year old adult beginner from Norway, and I wanted to see if it was possible to learn to play the violin as an adult.
This video is a collection of all the videos I recorded since I first started to play the violin. From week 1 until today.
I didn't think I could get this far in the short amount of time I've played :) I didn't really expect anything when i started. I just wanted to try and see how far i'll get :)
I'm mostly self-taught. I had a teacher last year but only had a total of 8 lessons. Hoping to find a new teacher soon :) I hope you like this video. UPDATE: I got a teacher after 2 years and 5 months. I have one lesson every week. "

Daddy's Home - Review by Carleton Rutter
Directed by: Sean Anders
Starring: Will Ferrell, Mark Wahlberg and Linda Cardellini
Genre: Comedy
Strapline: "Choose Your Daddy"
A mild-mannered radio executive strives to become the best step dad to his wife's two children, but complications ensue when their free-wheeling and free-loading real father arrives, forcing him to compete for the affection of the kids.
Daddy's Home is the first on-screen pairing of Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg since The Other Guys (2010). I enjoyed that movie, I caught it February this year on stream.
Sean Anders the director for this movie was responsible for the screenplay for one of my favourite comedies of the last few years, We're The Millers (2013), the movie, Vacation (2015) should have been, but wasn't.
So still recovering from my wife's delicious Christmas Day meal and with this in mind I hauled myself to my usual cinema with the best intentions. I enjoyed Daddy's Home for the most part, it's a nice comedy, just nothing that made my jaw continue to ache after my Christmas Day luncheon.
My main issue with the movie is it never really took off, or came alive. It was too sedate and it would have been served much better by a sharper script.
The movie which doesn't outstay it's welcome at a fast paced 96 mins features good chemistry though between it's lead duo, who continue to prove they are a good on-screen double act. As for Will Ferrell well, he's Will Ferrell. The amiable straight laced slightly anal family guy, this is Ferrell firmly at home, the edges of the envelope are firmly intact. Mark Wahlberg goes toe-for-toe with Farrell on all fronts and steals the show as the confident, swaggering birth father, Dusty Mayron.
This is firmly a vehicle for its lead duo so all other characters with the possible exception of Ferrell's onscreen wife Sara, (Linda Cardellini) fall by the wayside including a miscast Thomas Hayden-Church (Spiderman 3).
As I said earlier the movie could have been served much better by a sharper script, therefore as a result the movie for the most part is at best mildly funny, it occurred to me whilst watching it how much I wasn't really laughing. Which is a shame as I wanted to like this movie more than I did. It's not particularly gross but it does go a little low brow at times when a smarter script would have kept things more in focus. Also even though they had good chemistry the line between the love/hate relationship between Brad and Dusty was hazier that it needed to be at times.
With the eternally amiable Ferrell at it's heart as well the movie never strays from a predictably happy ending. But what an ending. It's in the movie's final act that the momentum starts to build which culminates in one of the best endings to a comedy in ages. Daddy's Home gets an extra star for that alone.
Finally, with the movie securing a Christmas release date, you would think that it would have a Christmas setting. However you'd be wrong. Save one scene at Christmas (Which is in May, no need to explain!) the movie is not at all festive. It's the movie's strong central theme of family and kids that is behind it's holiday release.
My Rating
3*/5*
Daddy's Home is an enjoyable rental. Ferrell and Wahlberg show once more that they have good on-screen chemistry and it's nice central theme of family has a sweet heart, that despite it's lack of festive trimmings strangely fits within the season. Save for it's last act and great ending though, the movie as a comedy struggled to break the surface meaning that this is one movie that you can catch at home. It's less Daddy's Home and more Mum's the word.

Christmas Revenge: Surprising Dad with a Fake Xbox
"For my 16th birthday my parents surprised me with what I thought was a brand new Xbox 360. Upon opening the box I discovered that it did not hold an Xbox, but they keys to my first car, a Honda Civic. I was elated and very grateful for the car, but until I saw it I was still a little disappointed that the box did not hold an Xbox. When presented with the car, I went to the trunk to see if the Xbox had been placed in there. I assumed they had still purchased an Xbox since they had all of the packaging. I only later realized that my parents had merely bought the packaging on E-bay without the console inside. I purchased my own Xbox a few months later and the car served me well for several years.
I come from a family of motor enthusiasts. My father, primarily, loves everything racing-oriented. He loves the Forza franchise but has been unable to enjoy the newer installments to the franchise because he does not own an Xbox One. For Christmas my brothers and I pooled together to get him his own console so that he can join us online in the wonderful world of Forza. In the process we decided that as a form of revenge, we should reenact the events of my 16th birthday, but with him as the unsuspecting victim. "
