Watch the Sunset - Poster and Video

In a single afternoon a man comes to grips with the power of his past when his estranged family becomes entangled in its web.

'Watch the Sunset' was shot on location in the country town of Kerang, Victoria. The cast and crew were able to utilise the entire town of Kerang as our set for the film, where the action follows through 8 different locations in this beautiful regional town. Using actors amongst a real community to bring true sincerity, honesty and immersion into identifiable Aussie backdrop.
The story centers on Danny Biaro, an outlaw bikie member, who wants to change his ways and start a new life with his estranged family. But his past quickly catches up to him and he is compelled to make a decision that will affect his life forever. The journey follows him rushing against the clock to save his family.

'Watch the Sunset' has an underlying theme about effects of Crystal Meth or Ice, which is very real contemporary Australian issue. The one shot concept of our film allows the viewers to observe the harsh reality of this regional problem on an intimate and raw level. But at the core of this film we find a story of love and an unrelenting quest for redemption.

It's not you. Bad doors are everywhere.

There's a door on the 10th floor in the Vox Media office I hate so much. You probably know one of these too. But it's not our fault.

And luckily, Roman Mars of 99% Invisible magically arrived in my cellphone to send me on a cross-country journey to find out the incredible surprises behind this common complaint:

Don Norman started complaining about doors over 25 years ago. Doors shouldn't need instructions – the shape of them can guide you through just fine. So why do so many doors need instruction manuals right on the side of them?

When most people complain about something, nothing happens. Don Norman is not most people – he's a psychologist and cognitive scientist. Don Norman thought about, and wrote about his complaints so incredibly thoroughly that he changed the world. 99% Invisible's Roman Mars helps tell the story.

Love Triangles on Film

Love triangles are the stuff of Hollywood legend, with many a classic film basing its premise on the agonising choice between two very different lovers. The wonderfully romantic BROOKLYN perfectly portrays the dilemma of choosing between two futures, with standout performances from the three young leads (Saoirse Ronan, Emory Cohen and Domhnall Gleeson) – so, to celebrate its release on EST, Blu-ray and DVD on the 29th Feb, we’re taking a look at some of the other greatest love triangles on film...

Brooklyn (2015)
Based on the award-winning novel by Colm Tôibín and transformed into a BAFTA and Academy Award® nominated screenplay by Nick Hornby, Brooklyn stars Saoirse Ronan as Eilis, a young woman who moves from small town Ireland to Brooklyn, where she has the opportunity for work, for a future - and love, in the form of Italian-American, Tony (Emory Cohen). When a family tragedy forces her to return to Ireland, she finds herself drawn back into the life she left behind- including the possibility of a budding romance with local bachelor, Jim Farrell (Domhnall Gleeson). As a secret threatens to reveal itself, Eilis has to confront a terrible dilemma - a heart-breaking choice between two men and two countries.

The Hunger Games series (2012-2015)
This hit franchise based on Suzanne Collin’s bestselling YA novels stars Jennifer Lawrence as protagonist Katniss Everdeen, alongside Liam Hemsworth and Josh Hutcherson. Hemsworth plays Gale, Katniss’ childhood friend, while Hutcherson takes the role of Peeta Mellark, her fellow competitor in the Games. Throughout the competition and the subsequent rebellion, Peeta and Gale vie for her affections. Hemsworth is arguably the more brooding individual, plagued with insecurities as he struggles to reconcile his feelings for Katniss with his doubts that Katniss and Peeta’s ‘fake relationship’ for the cameras really is fake- but Hutcherson must be commended for his sensitive portrayal of the traumatised, selfless Peeta, determined to do anything for the woman he loves.

Love Rosie (2015)
Lily Collins and Sam Claflin take the lead in this charming adaptation of Celia Aherne’s novel ‘Where Rainbows End’. Rosie and Alex have been best friends since they were 5, so they couldn't possibly be right for one another... or could they? One awkward incident at an 18th birthday and countless missed opportunities sends them both on completely different paths. Plus, while battling with / denying their feelings for one another, they also have to contend with their own partners at different point in their lives – including Sally (Tamsin Egerton), Bethany (Suki Waterhouse and Greg (Christian Cooke).

Last Night (2010)
This little-known ensemble piece, directed by Massy Tadjedin and starring Keira Knightley, Sam Worthington, Eva Mendes and Guillaume Canet, offers a slow-burning and understated study on temptation. Joanna (Knightley) and Michael Reed (Worthington) are seven years into a happy, stable marriage when he is sent on a business trip with a colleague he is fighting an attraction to. That same evening, Joanna runs into an old flame and spends the evening considering how things might have been...

Closer (2004)
Based on Patrick Maber’s play, this drama directed by Mike Nichols is more of a ‘love quadrant’ than triangle, and featured standout performances from its four leads- Julia Roberts, Jude Law, Clive Owen and Natalie Portman. Offering a painfully brutal take on infidelity and betrayal, the film features one particularly memorable scene involving an internet chat-room and a case of seriously mistaken identity.

The Notebook (2004)
Set in the 1930’s, this adaptation of Nicholas Sparks’ weepy romance stars Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams. When wealthy seventeen year-old Allie Hamilton (McAdams) spends summer vacation in Seabrook, she meets local worker Noah Calhoun (Gosling) at a carnival and they soon fall in love. When Allie’s parents, disapproving of the match, whisk her away to New York, Noah writes every day for a year- blissfully unaware that every letter is being intercepted by Allie’s mother. Three years later, the United States joins the World War II and Allie takes a job as an army nurse- where she meets injured soldier Lon Hammond (James Marsden). After the war, they begin courting and a proposal soon follows. However, when Allie accidentally sees a photo of Noah in the newspaper, she finds herself in turmoil, and is forced to make a choice between her first love and her new commitment.

Bridget Jones’s Diary (2001)
The adaptation of Helen Fielding’s bestseller stars Renee Zellweger as everyone’s favourite singleton, along with Colin Firth and Hugh Grant as her two very different suitors. A reinterpretation of Pride and Prejudice, bad boy Daniel Cleaver (Grant) and her ‘true love’ Mark Darcy (Firth), fight it out for the charming, ever-so-slightly disaster prone Bridget- which leads to numerous awkward encounters (and one particularly memorable fistfight).

Titanic (1997)
Catapulting Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio to the A-list, this James Cameron directed epic romantic drama focuses on the ill-fated love affair between young aristocrat Rose DeWitt Bukater (Winslet) and penniless artist Jack Dawson (DiCaprio), as they both embark on RMS Titanic’s maiden voyage. Billy Zane takes the role of Cal Hockley- Rose’s spoilt, violent and sadistic fiancé, who immediately notes the attraction between his fiancé and Jack, and goes to extraordinarily vindictive lengths to keep them apart.

The Age of Innocence (1993)
Michelle Pfeiffer turns in a wonderfully understated performance as the disgraced Countess Ellen Olenska, in Martin Scorsese’s adaptation of Edith Wharton’s tale of 19th century New York high society. Daniel Day-Lewis plays the young lawyer Newland Archer, who falls in love with the Countess- the only issue being that he’s already engaged to her cousin May Welland (Winona Ryder); and when their affair is finally exposed, it brings into stark relief the hypocrisy of the New York upper classes.

My Best Friend’s Wedding (1997)
This classic romantic comedy stars Julia Roberts, Cameron Diaz, Dermot Mulroney and Rupert Everett and remains one of the funniest ‘love triangle’ set-ups in cinema. Roberts plays a successful food critic who, on finding out the news that her best friend Michael (Mulroney) is engaged, promptly decides she is in love with him and attempts to sabotage his upcoming wedding to Kimmy (Diaz). Despite the advice (and wonderfully dry wit) of her friend George (Everett), she finds herself stooping to outrageous tactics... but is she really in love with him, or just the idea of him?

The Graduate (1967)
Mike Nichols comedy-drama is often lauded as one of the greatest films of all time, and features a wickedly seductive performance from Anne Bancroft as the iconic Mrs Robinson. Dustin Hoffman’s turn as Benjamin Braddock is equally brilliant as the smart, discontented graduate who finds himself embroiled in an affair with his father’s business partner’s wife – and ultimately having to decide between her and her daughter, Elaine (Katharine Ross).

BROOKLYN arrives on Blu-ray, DVD and EST from February 29th, courtesy of Lionsgate Home Entertainment.

Real Future: What Happens When You Dare Expert Hackers To Hack You

Last year, after reporting on the hacks of Sony Pictures, JPMorgan Chase, Ashley Madison, and other major companies, REAL FUTURE's Kevin Roose got curious about what it felt like to be on the victim’s side of a giant data breach.

So he decided to stage an experiment: he invited two expert hackers (neither of whom he’d ever met) to spend two weeks hacking him as deeply and thoroughly as they could, using all of the tools at their disposal. His only condition was that the hackers had to promise not to steal money or any other assets, reveal any private information, or do any irreversible damage to him or anyone else. And when they were finished wrecking his life, they had to help him put it back together.

In this episode of REAL FUTURE, we go to DefCon, a hacker convention in Las Vegas, to see the results of this dangerous experiment, and learn just how easy it is for hackers to do serious damage to a person's life.

Ireland in Cinema

Ireland in Cinema

Based on the award winning novel by Colm Tôibín, Brooklyn tells the story of Eilis (Saoirse Ronan), a young woman who uproots her life in Ireland and travels to Brooklyn to pursue new opportunities. Eilis finds love in her new life in the form of an Italian-American man called Tony, played by Emory Cohen. Due to an unforeseen family tragedy, Eilis is forced to return to Ireland where her past emerges and leaves her struggling to decide between her old and new life. To celebrate John Crowley’s BAFTA and Academy Award® nominated film arriving on Blu-Ray, DVD, and EST from the 29thof February courtesy of Lionsgate Home Entertainment we look at other times Ireland has been portrayed on the screen.

The Commitments (1991)
Alan Parker’s The Commitments follows the chaotic rise and fall of the Dublin Soul Band of which the film is named after. Robert Arkins stars as Jimmy Rabbitte, an unemployed Dubliner who finds himself inspired to start his own band after becoming fed up with the local music scene. In the hopes of sounding like some of the great American soul musicians of the 1960s, Jimmy assembles a band. By recruiting former musician Joey “The Lips” Fagan and sheer dedication to the cause, Jimmy successfully puts together an ensemble that brings the soul scene in Dublin to life. Unfortunately, disputes occur, tensions rise, and members fall out reminding us that not all good things last forever.

The Quiet Man (1952)
Retired boxer Sean Thornton (John Wayne) decides to leave Pittsburgh and return to his hometown in Ireland as an attempt to escape his past. After purchasing his childhood home, Sean’s attention is captured by a beautiful local girl, Mary Kate Danaher. Instantaneously he falls in love and begins courting her. However, Mary Kate is little sister to the ill-tempered and jealous “Red” Will Danaher, making Sean’s plan increasingly difficult. The town locals and Mary Kate try to convince Sean to use his former talent to resolve his problems with Will, complicating his efforts to disregard a dark moment from his old life.

My Left Foot (1989)
Jim Sheridan tackled the true story of Christy Brown in his Academy recognised film My Left Foot. Daniel Day-Lewis famously plays Christy, an Irish boy plagued with severe cerebral palsy and the ability to only control the movement of his left foot. The majority of the community write him off as intellectually disabled but with the help of his dedicated mother, teacher, and his own self-determination Christy is able to prove himself and become a talented painter, author, and poet. Day-Lewis spent months in a cerebral palsy clinic to research this role and was rewarded with an Oscar for his efforts.

PS I Love You (2007)
Holly Kennedy (Hillary Swank) loses her husband to a horrible illness just before her thirtieth birthday, leaving her broken and lost. Gerry (Gerald Butler), the aforementioned love of Holly’s life, anticipated that his death would have an unwelcomed effect on his widowed spouse and planned ahead. Beginning on her 30thbirthday, Holly receives a series of letters written by Gerry in an attempt to help her move on, all ending with the words, “PS. I love you.” Despite those closest to her thinking the letters are holding her to her past, with Gerry’s guidance Holly goes on a journey of rediscovery in this touching story of love and friendship.

Once (2007)
Set in the streets of Dublin, this incredibly original musical from John Carney depicts the power of music through a street musician (Glen Hansard) and his relationship with a Czech immigrant (Marketa Irglova). Together the pair uses music to fight their problems, work through the past, and find new love. Their songs portray the emotions they feel in a beautiful and romantic manner which happened to land the actors an Oscar award in 2007.

The Field (1990)
The Field is a classic tale of the struggle between old and new. Taking place in rural Ireland, Bull McCabe (Richard Harris) is a farmer with a passionate love for his land. However, when an American outside declares he wants to purchase the land to build a highway, it becomes worryingly likely that Bull will lose his field. Unwilling to go down without a fight, Bull will do anything in his power to prevent getting rid of his land. Jim Sheridan’s unforgettable film is a true testament to how far one would go for something they love and a poignant battle between the past and the future.

The Best of Domhnall Gleeson

The Best of Domhnall Gleeson

Domhnall Gleeson plays Jim Farrell in the cinematic adaptation of Colm Tôibín’s award winning novel BROOKLYN. The story follows Eilis (Saoirse Ronan) as she leaves her life in Ireland behind to pursue the American Dream. Whilst in The Big Apple, Eilis falls in love with the Italian-American Tony (Emory Cohen). Unfortunately, due to unforeseeable events she is forced to move back to Ireland where she falls for Jim and is left wondering whether or not to return to the States. In celebration of John Crowley’s BAFTA-winning and Academy Award®-nominated film arriving on Blu-Ray, DVD, and EST from the 29thof February courtesy of Lionsgate Home Entertainment we take a look at some of Gleeson’s best work to date.

The Revenant
Leonardo DiCaprio may be stealing the spotlight in terms of performances and awards in Alejandro Inarritu’s survival epic, The Revenant, but Domhnall’s portrayal of Captain Andrew Henry shouldn’t be overlooked. Following a brutal bear attack, frontiersman Hugh Glass (DiCaprio) witnesses the murder of his son and is left for dead at the hands of John Fitzgerald (Hardy), a member of his own expedition team. Glass literally crawls out of his own grave and embarks on a visually stunning and physically exhausting revenge mission to find his old team, lead by Captain Henry, and get the man responsible for abandoning him and killing his boy.

Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens
Securing a part in cinema’s largest franchise was a spectacular feat for the Irish actor. The seventh instalment of George Lucas’ sci-fi classic takes place 30 years after Episode VI and the destruction of the Empire. However, a new threat comes to surface in the form of the First Order. A group of unlikely new heroes (and a few old ones) must work together to prevent the First Order and its mysterious leader Snoke from finding Luke Skywalker and completely eliminating the Jedi. Gleeson plays General Hux, a callous First Order commander on Star Killer Base determined to shift power away from Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) and into his own hands.

Ex-Machina
A step away from big budget blockbusters sees Domhnall in one of his best roles to date. He plays Caleb, a computer programmer at the biggest internet company in the world. He gets ‘randomly’ selected as the winner of an internal office competition to spend a week in the mountain home of the company’s reclusive CEO, Nathan (the brilliant Oscar Isaac). Caleb shortly finds out that he isn’t there for a holiday, but to be the heart and centre of an incredible experiment involving the first ever true AI, embodied in a beautiful robot (Alicia Vikander).

Unbroken
Angelina Jolie’s heroic tale of resistance follows the life of Louis Zamperini (Jack O’Connell), a former Olympic athlete who joins the armed forces during World War Two. After a near fatal plane crash Louis and two of his crewmates (Domhnall Gleeson and Finn Wittrock) are forced to spend 47 days on a small raft in the middle of shark infested waters. Just when they thought things couldn’t get worse, the survivors are picked up by a Japanese warship and taken to a P.O.W camp. Louis is subjected to a barrage of torture but never once seems to lose character and constantly uses his strong will to inspire the other members of the camp. Gleeson shed a considerable amount of weight for this role, so much so that his contact lenses wouldn’t fit in his eyes anymore!

Frank
Lenny Abrahamson’s Frank is another indie classic for the young Gleeson. He plays a budding musician named Jon who joins an avant-garde pop band called The Soronprfbs. The front man of the group is Frank (Michael Fassbender), an eccentric and mysterious man who always wears a large papier-mâché mask. Jon tries his best to broaden the band’s audience and share Frank’s gift with the world, resulting in a multitude of problems which threaten to tear the group apart.

About Time
On his 21st birthday Tim Lake (Gleeson) discovers that he has the ability to travel in time. While his travels won’t affect the grander scheme of history he can still manipulate what has happened and will happen in his own life. So, of course, the first thing he does is set out to get a girlfriend. After meeting Mary (Rachel McAdams) and repeatedly setting back the clocks to win her heart, he finally succeeds. Tim uses his gift as well as he can to aid all his errors and those of his friends and relatives. However, he soon realises the dangers of time travel and the limitations it possesses.

Sensation
This is an odd one from an earlier stage in the Irishman’s career. While it didn’t quite reach the international audience it may have liked to this dark comedy still proved a pivotal point in Gleeson’s growth and journey to stardom. He takes the lead as Donal, a young Irishman who embarks on a relationship with a call girl. Together the two lovers devise a plan to use Donal’s inheritance to open up a brothel. Not your typical boy-meets-girl film but still a fascinating watch.

True Grit
Domhnall had a small part in Joel and Ethan Coen’s western remake as Moon, an outlaw from the Ned Pepper Gang. Rooster Cogburn (Jeff Bridges), Mattie Ross (Hailee Steinfeld), and LaBoeuf (Matt Damon) encounter Moon whilst on their journey to track down the man responsible for the murder of Mattie’s father. The trio face dangerous and unexpected events on their travels through Indian land, but their determination and grit make them an unstoppable force that will stop at nothing to find the hired gun responsible for the killing.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 & 2
Very little introduction needed here. Domhnall Gleeson grabbed another part in a legendary franchise by playing Bill Weasley in The Deathly Hallows. Having been cut from The Goblet of Fire, the eldest Weasley brother finally joins the ensemble as a member of the Order of the Phoenix. He does his best to help as Harry and the gang search for Horcruxes and take on Lord Voldermort. It’s just a shame it took the character so long to get involved!

Landslide - Elk City, Idaho. Feb. 18, 2016

"WARNING: Foul Language! My husband, Bret Edwards and fellow co-workers were working on clearing small debris from Hwy 14 near Elk City, Id. when all heck broke loose! This has been a problem area for sometime, so whenever small rocks start coming down they get out of the way and wait for it to stop trickling. Bret usually gets out his phone and shoots some video just in case. This time it payed off! This was a very close call for the entire crew, things could have turned out much worse. Not only was there the threat of a massive landslide, there are overhead power lines that came crashing down onto the front loader and right where Bret was standing. This is a crazy, real life scary moment. I am thankful to still have him, and the rest of the guys! No one was injured. In the winter, this highway is the only way in and out of Elk City, Dixie and other small communities up river. Thank you for viewing. "
