House on Rodeo Gulch is a psychological thriller set in the redwoods of the Santa Cruz, California. And the first thing that you will notice when watching this is how beautifully this is shot. I know I really appreciated some of the angles, and scenery, really beautiful area.

The film follows a mother and daughter after they move into this beautiful house, nothing could possibly go wrong could it, well just when you think everything is perfect life has this annoying way of turning everything upside down. As things start to happen in the house, we are at first led to believe it is the paranormal, but as the story unfolds, the truth turns out to be just as if not more terrifying. So is there anyone out there who can help? Perhaps the next door neighbour, a respectable Reverend, with a big old cross dangling from his next. Surely he cant be involved right?

There is even a scene that I personally would consider the perfect embodiment of one of my own biggest fears, I wont spoil it, but lets just say after I finished watching the film, I will be checking things even closer than usual. And that is the point about this film, it does well when it comes to making you think.

That's not to say the film is without humour, it has some good moments which made me laugh, not to mention some perfectly acceptable and enjoyable gratuitous moments with the stunningly gorgeous Megan Jay Simrell running about in her underwear.

I found this to be a thoroughly enjoyable old fashioned psychological thriller, with some stand out moments, and some creepiness that will make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up.

I watched this on a Saturday night all alone in the dark, my advice to you is perhaps leave one light on. Just in case. Oh and never mess with a cute girl in her underwear, you never know where she might be concealing her gun.

I give this film a decent 8/10

The 150 plus guest-list this year is as vibrant and eclectic as ever, with nearly 40 of the films represented. It is a year when fan favourites are reunited and the new wave of genre talent is firmly embraced within the FrightFest fold.

It’s been five years since Don Mancini and Fiona Dourif raised the Empire roof with CURSE OF CHUCKY and this year they are joined by the irrepressible Jennifer Tilly for the opening World Premiere of CULT OF CHUCKY.  Also attending five years after his previous appearance will be the one and only Kane Hodder, Together with director Derek Dennis Herbert, Kane will be launching his remarkably honest and moving documentary TO HELL AND BACK: THE KANE HODDER STORY as well as supporting another returning favourite, director Adam Green, who will be here to launch his HATCHET redux.

You can’t have Green without Lynch, and ten years since they first put FrightFest on the international map with their brilliant ‘Road to FrightFest’ shorts, they are in the building, with Joe Lynch in town to big up his uber-exciting MAYHEM. And the bad boys of horror have something special planned – a live edition of their famous Movie Crypt Podcast.

Hollywood horror royalty Barbara Crampton lit up FrightFest in 2015 when she presented a record four of her latest releases and the popular icon is back with REPLACE, alongside the film’s director Norbert Keil. Barbara is also one of the NEW BLOOD mentors, alongside prolific 68 KILL producer Travis Stevens and ATTACK OF THE ADULT BABIES director and TV star Dominic Brunt. He will be joined for the film’s World Premiere by producer and actress Joanne Mitchell, and lead actress Sally Dexter.

Interview with Producer of WTF! - Steve Parker

From prolific producers Steve Parker and Jody Parker and director Peter Herro comes WTF!, a love letter to classic horror films arriving via Midnight Releasing on August 1.

Three years ago, twenty-two year old girl-next-door Rachel (Ott) barely survived a brutal massacre that left her friends in pieces. Time has passed, Rachel has moved on, but unfortunately history has a way of repeating itself. 

Her close friends are spending spring break in a secluded house in the woods, and they have cordially invited her to join. Little does she realize that another bloodbath will be showing up as plus one. Once Rachel and her friends arrive at the cabin, the partying, sex, and terror begins.

We caught up with Steve Parker to get the 411 on WTF!

How long of a journey has this been for the WTF! Producing team? How did it come about?

Over three years ago Peter brought us the script, and we sent him back to writing with a lot of notes. When he came back a year later, the script worked. Six months later we wrapped production, and then we spent two years in post. We were busy on major projects (Beverly Hills Lizard People, and the best-selling Belgian book series The Dark Numbers) and this was simple enough and Peter was going to do the line producing.

What was the appeal for you?

It was a cute little script, and had great potential.

Was it shot in your neck of the woods?

I’m the weirdo—I’m San Francisco-based. The production was in L.A., and even my business partner Jody Wheeler is based there.

Do you imagine a much different series had a major studio got hold of it?

I think they’d have re-written the details to fit marketing wisdom.

How would you describe the tone?

It’s a very Cabin in the Woodskind of setting where you gradually become aware how creepy and isolated a place you are.

Tell us about the cast….

We found a great cast of newcomers. Callie Ott (Rachel) has a previous feature credit, but for everyone else it was a first feature opportunity. They’re talented, attractive and you’ll be seeing more from the all. Andrea Hunt has a role in the up-coming Awaken the Shadowman, for example.

How has advances in technology opened up doors for filmmakers?

Shot on a RED Scarlet, there are really great cameras and the ability to do VFX and other post magic at low cost helps us make movies that look like a million dollars for a small fraction of that budget.

Can you tell us about your next film?

We’re planning to shoot Beverly Hills Lizard People in spring of next year in Vancouver. An extension of the L.A. subway into Beverly Hills disturbs the underground lair of the lizard people who live beneath it. It should be fun! Look for parodies of the current administration’s cabinet! Having received universal acclaim for his outstanding lead performances as Jackson 'Jax' Teller in FX’s outlawed motorcycle club crime drama Sons of Anarchy, Charlie Hunnam - the unlikely lad from the north east of England - has gone from strength to strength. Since Sons of Anarchy launched him into the mainstream, Hunnam has landed a number of scorching lead roles in Hollywood blockbusters such as Guy Ritchie’s King Arthur: Legend of the Sword and James Gray’s remarkable true-life epic about early 20th century British explorer Percy Fawcett The Lost City of Z which comes to Blu-ray, DVD and digital on 24th July courtesy of StudioCanal.

Although there is no doubt that Hunnam is now an international movie star, it wasn’t always that way as he began his career on television, appearing first in three episodes of Byker Grove in 1998, before the big time beckoned with his first major role as the love-smitten Nathan Maloney in Queer as Folk (1999), a critical success that ranked at number 13 in The Guardian’s 2010 list of "The Top 50 TV Dramas of All Time". Subsequently, Hunnam gained his first lead cinematic role as Nicholas Nickleby in the 2002 film adaptation of Charles Dickens’ classic novel. Further film roles came through in the mid-noughties, most notably a pivotal character in the critically acclaimed drama Cold Mountain (2003) and a less memorable stab at a cockney accent in British football hooligan flick Green Street (2005). As noted, though, it wasn’t until Sons of Anarchy that Hunnam thrust himself to the forefront of Hollywood’s long list of leading men.
Let’s take a look at what he’s been up to since then...

Sons of Anarchy (2008-2014)
Here it is, then: Hunnam’s breakthrough role. As Jax, the grizzly, hardened and morally flawed biker from the Californian coast, Hunnam led from the front across seven seasons of the TV drama. Centring on both the personal and family life of Jackson "Jax" Teller and his biker crew-cum-organised crime syndicate SAMCRO (Sons of Anarchy Motorcycle Club, Redwood Original; based on the real life Oakland motorcycle crew Hell’s Angels), Sons of Anarchy explores the themes of vigilantism, government corruption and racism in fictional Californian town, Charming. Jax lives for the club, but as the seasons pass he questions the violent extremes his peers will go to in the name of "business”. A stunning turn from Hunnam that grabbed the attention of casting directors across the globe.

Pacific Rim (2013)
Treasured visionary filmmaker Guillermo Del Toro has long been known for his incredibly imaginative and detailed monster creations, which he provides in spades with this colossal monster knockout. However what was most notable about the director’s first real stab at a mainstream Hollywood blockbuster was his human characters, and how relatable and believable they were in amongst the incredible Robot vs Monster action set pieces, unlike many other films of this nature. This was true none more so than for Hunnam’s protagonist Raleigh, who is tasked with leading the fight against giant beasts who have come to destroy earth from another dimension, by piloting robot behemoths to take them down. Hunnam, as expected, brings much needed life to his lead character that could so easily have been lost under all the incredible crashy, smashy CGI.

The Lost City of Z
Based on author David Grann’s non-fiction bestseller, The Lost City Of Z is the incredible true story of pioneering British explorer Percy Fawcett, who journeys into the Amazon at the dawn of the 20th century. In the film, Hunnam stars as the ill-fated explorer who, despite being ridiculed by the scientific establishment that regarded indigenous populations as savages, returns time and again to his beloved jungle; discovering evidence of a previously unknown, advanced civilization that may have once inhabited the region in an attempt to prove his case. A big role and one that caught the attention of critics, Hunnam’s performance in the film further cements his credentials as a leading man, and a big screen force to be reckoned with.

King Arthur: Legend of the Sword (2017)
This summer, British director Guy Ritchie cast Hunnam as the eponymous Arthur in his action-packed fantasy epic, King Arthur: Legend of the Sword, in which he starred alongside a heavily eye-lined Jude Law. As expected, Ritchie brought his signature dynamic style to the Excalibur myth, tracing Arthur's journey from the streets to the throne, via a sword in the stone. However the film struggled at the box office; not even a cameo from Ritchie’s bezzie Golden Balls could entice the audiences that were expected. Nevertheless, Hunnam’s performance was by and large considered a good one, and yet another high profile leading role to add to his impressive 2017.

Papillon (2017)
Up next, Hunnam will star opposite Rami Malek in the titular role of Papillon, an upcoming biographical film directed by Michael Noer. Based on the best-selling autobiography by the French convict Henri “Papillon” Charrière, Papillon charts Charrière's escape attempts from the brutal penal colony on French Guiana. The film, which is now in post-production, is a remake of the 1973 American crime drama prison film of the same name starring Steve McQueen (as Papillon) and Dustin Hoffman (as Louis Dega, as played by Malek in this version). Big shoes to fill, but something tells me Hunnam is up to the task...

Graham reveals: “My image is an attempt to amalgamate the Gothic roots of horror with the 70s Monster revival that saturated the US and UK, inspiring generations of filmmakers that created some of the most successful film franchises and oddities of the last 40 years. I also thought it would be fun to play with the idea of a FrightFest Phantom, the face behind the best in horror and added the scratches and dirt to make it look like old damaged film stock.”

The Odyssey - New UK Poster & Trailer

The film examines the life of ocean-explorer and adventurer Jacques Cousteau, one of the iconic figures of the 1960s.

1948. Jacques Cousteau, his wife and his two sons are living in paradise, in a beautiful house overlooking the Mediterranean. But all Cousteau can think of is adventure. Thanks to his invention, an independent aqualung allowing divers to breathe under water, he has discovered a whole new world. Now all he wants to do is explore this world. And he is willing to sacrifice everything to achieve this.

The screenplay is co-written by director Jérôme Salle and Laurent Turner. Produced by Nathalie Gastaldo Godeau, Philippe Godeau, Olivier Delbosc, Marc Missonnier and the executive producer is Christine De Jekel.

The film was edited by Stan Collet (Zulu, Paris je t’aime) with a score from Oscar-winning composer Alexandre Desplat (The Grand Budapest Hotel, The King’s Speech). The creative team also includes production designer Laurent Ott (Elle) costume designer Carine Sarfati (Tell No One) and hair and make-up designer Rick Findlater.

THE ODYSSEY will be released in UK and Ireland by Altitude Film Distribution on 18 August 2017.

Interview with Producer of WTF! - Steve Parker

From prolific producers Steve Parker and Jody Parker and director Peter Herro comes WTF!, a love letter to classic horror films arriving via Midnight Releasing on August 1.

Three years ago, twenty-two year old girl-next-door Rachel (Ott) barely survived a brutal massacre that left her friends in pieces. Time has passed, Rachel has moved on, but unfortunately history has a way of repeating itself. 

Her close friends are spending spring break in a secluded house in the woods, and they have cordially invited her to join. Little does she realize that another bloodbath will be showing up as plus one. Once Rachel and her friends arrive at the cabin, the partying, sex, and terror begins.

We caught up with Steve Parker to get the 411 on WTF!

How long of a journey has this been for the WTF! Producing team? How did it come about?

Over three years ago Peter brought us the script, and we sent him back to writing with a lot of notes. When he came back a year later, the script worked. Six months later we wrapped production, and then we spent two years in post. We were busy on major projects (Beverly Hills Lizard People, and the best-selling Belgian book series The Dark Numbers) and this was simple enough and Peter was going to do the line producing.

What was the appeal for you?

It was a cute little script, and had great potential.

Was it shot in your neck of the woods?

I’m the weirdo—I’m San Francisco-based. The production was in L.A., and even my business partner Jody Wheeler is based there.

Do you imagine a much different series had a major studio got hold of it?

I think they’d have re-written the details to fit marketing wisdom.

How would you describe the tone?

It’s a very Cabin in the Woodskind of setting where you gradually become aware how creepy and isolated a place you are.

Tell us about the cast….

We found a great cast of newcomers. Callie Ott (Rachel) has a previous feature credit, but for everyone else it was a first feature opportunity. They’re talented, attractive and you’ll be seeing more from the all. Andrea Hunt has a role in the up-coming Awaken the Shadowman, for example.

How has advances in technology opened up doors for filmmakers?

Shot on a RED Scarlet, there are really great cameras and the ability to do VFX and other post magic at low cost helps us make movies that look like a million dollars for a small fraction of that budget.

Can you tell us about your next film?

We’re planning to shoot Beverly Hills Lizard People in spring of next year in Vancouver. An extension of the L.A. subway into Beverly Hills disturbs the underground lair of the lizard people who live beneath it. It should be fun! Look for parodies of the current administration’s cabinet!
