The Fastest Superheroes on Screen
We all love the idea of having a superpower and there’s a wide range of super-human abilities seen on TV and on the big screen. One of the most notable powers depicted has to be super speed, donned by the likes of comic book characters from The Flash to Disney’s Dash from The Incredibles. To celebrate the release of The Flash: The Complete Third Season on Blu-ray™ and DVD September 4, we’re revisiting some of our favourite, fastest superheroes to have graced our screens.
Quicksilver (X-Men Apocalypse)
We last saw Quicksilver portrayed by Evan Peters in the latest X-Men adventure, X-Men: Apocalypse. In this interpretation, Peter Maximoff is an American teenager and mutant with the ability to move, think, and perceive at supersonic speeds. Having been recruited by Wolverine, we find out he is the son of infamous mutant, Magneto. Quicksilver is also played by Aaron Taylor-Johnson as Pietro Maximoff in Marvel’s Avengers: Age of Ultron.
Dash (The Incredibles)
The youngest of our quick characters, Dash is the 10 year-old son of Mr Incredible and Elastagirl (AKA Mrs Incredible) of Disney’s The Incredibles. He’s a reckless and cheeky character who tends to get himself in trouble, especially for using his powers when he isn’t supposed to at school. Nonetheless, he gives his older superhero counterparts a ‘run’ for their money.
Agents (The Matrix)
Agents, who usually work as a trio, are guardians of the Matrix. They possess the extraordinary power of being able manipulate their surroundings; this includes superhuman strength and the ability to move quickly enough to dodge incoming bullets. However, they have their limitations as they can’t perform any other actions outside the boundaries of their programming.
Deathstroke (Arrow)
DC’s notorious assassin features in the TV series, Arrow, where he is portrayed by Manu Bennett, though he is often seen as one of Nightwing’s and Batman’s nemeses. Deathstroke is known for having superhuman strength, speed, agility, and durability. The villain has also appeared in Smallville and more recently, it has been announced that Joe Manganiello will play Deathstroke for the DC Extended Universe film series.
Superman (Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice)
Superman is without doubt one of the most powerful superheroes of all time, last seen on screen when played by Henry Cavill in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. He is capable of moving, reacting, running and flying at superhuman speeds, though not fast as the Flash on a planet, Superman can fly at speeds faster than light.
The Flash (The Flash)
Barry Allen, played by Grant Gustin, is a Central City police forensic scientist leading a reasonably happy life. However, this all changes when a massive particle accelerator accident creates a dark matter storm that strikes the forensic scientist — bestowing him with super-speed and making him the fastest man (and superhero) alive.

Interview with Frank Merle - Writer/Director of #FromJennifer
Horror icons Tony Todd (Candyman, the Final Destination series) and Derek Mears (Friday the 13th, "Twin Peaks") star in #FromJennifer, the "highly original and radically ingenious" (Starburst) new film from award-winning writer/director Frank Merle, out 9/28 on Digital and Cable from Sector 5 Films.
Jennifer Peterson (Danielle Taddei) is having a very rough week. She's been fired from a movie shoot, her manager just dropped her, and her boyfriend dumped her, right after releasing a sex tape of them together.
But Jennifer has decided to turn things around: she hatches a plot she calls "Revenge Porn Revenge," in which she plans to settle the score by filming a devastatingly elaborate video and posting it online, making herself famous in the process. But like everything else in her life lately, her revenge plot doesn't go according to plan, and a shocking trail of carnage is left in her wake.
Winner of no less than 7 major film festival awards, including Best Director at the Illinois International Film Festival (Frank Merle) and Best Actress (Danielle Taddei) at the Mindfield Film Festival, #FromJennifer features a host of genre favorites in-front of and behind-the-camera including actors Aaron Abrams ("Hannibal"), Meghan Deanna Smith (Sharknado: Heart of Sharkness), Trae Ireland (13/13/13) and Danielle Taddei (“Pretty Little Liars”), with producers Frank Merle and Hunter Johnson (#2Jennifer) and executive producers James Cullen Bressack (Bethany, To Jennifer) and Warren Croyle.
"A truly timely and Relevant Film" (We are Indie Horror), #FromJennifer on Digital and Cable September 28 from Sector 5 Films.
How many months have you been on the promo trail for the film now?
During the hunt for distribution I spent way too many months waiting to be able to talk about it, so now that I finally get to, it feels like it’s going by too quickly. Everything in the film business seems to go way too slowly or way too fast.
Is it something you enjoy – talking about the movie?
I feel so fortunate that I get to make movies, so I absolutely like talking about it. People who complain about this part of the process seem ungrateful to me.
In terms of the film itself, how close to it are you? Is it like a child you’re sending out into the world?
I once heard Werner Herzog speak about his career, and he was asked how he feels about the mistakes/imperfections in his earlier work, and would he go back and change them if he could. His answer was that he thinks of his films as his children and you don’t love your children any less just because they might have some flaws. I liked that answer a lot.
What was it about this particular project that appealed to you?
I got to work with some of my favourite people on this film. Danielle Taddei, who plays Jennifer, went to college with me, as did Aaron Abrams who plays her boyfriend Ralph. I’ve also been friends with Derek Mears for a while, too, and I really enjoyed getting to work with him. I didn’t know Tony Todd before working on this, but Candyman has always been one of my favourite horror films, so it was a real treat for me to get to direct one of my horor idols.
Are horror fans going to dig it?
This film defies the expectations of the genre. It’s funnier than expected, especially Derek Mears and Tony Todd, until the third act. Just when you think you understand the type of film it is, it takes a hard, gory turn than I’m sure horror fans will appreciate.
Was there a check-list of things you HAD to have in the film?
The only self-imposed requirement was a big, bloody climax. The original body count was six, but as we shot the film, I came up with some more ideas for added carnage, and the resulting final body count is now nine. Not too shabby!
It is comforting to see people covering the movie, and genuinely getting behind it?
Oh, yes! It’s very rewarding. I make movies for the fans, so my worst fear is making a movie and not been able to find an audience. All this coverage will help #FromJennifer find its audience.
They said that a theatrical release is only a ‘promo’ for a VOD/DVD release these days. What’s your take?
That’s more of a question for distributors, sales agents, and marketing. They crunch numbers and determine that a theatrically released film has more value than a straight to VOD film. In general, I don’t think audiences care about that stuff.
Will we all, at some time, be watching films on VOD only?
Have cars replaced horses as a way to get from A to B? Yes, they have. But you can still find a horse to ride if you really want to, but you might have to drive out to a ranch to do so. Perhaps the extra effect makes the experience even more special. The same might eventually be true for movies. The theatrical experience will never go away entirely.
How much do you love the theatre, though? The genre film is almost made for it, isn’t there?
For those who enjoy the theatrical experience, it will always be the optimal way of watching a movie, not because of the size of the screen, but because of the communal experience. That’s why scary movies work so well with big crowds, you can hear the gasps and feel the fear of those around you.
If a film of yours isn’t getting a big screen release do you usually try and set-up a screening for it in a theatre anyway? Or get it a festival run? So that those that want to see it on a huge creamy screen can.?
Oh yes, of course. Always. All of my films have been fortunate enough to play at several festivals, and I’ve attended as many of them as I can, because it’s great fun to watch it with audiences.
With film fans themselves being the biggest supporter of sci-fi, horror and fantasy movies, should genre films be excluded from film criticism?
The only problem with film criticism is that so many so-called critics are doing it wrong. Criticism should always be framed as a subjective opinion, as in, how the reviewer felt about the film, what was his or her personal experience. That’s always fair and should be welcomed, whether it’s good or bad. The trouble is, so many reviewers try to make themselves the standard-barer of taste, so instead of saying “I enjoyed this film because…” they say “This is a good film because…” Or of course, what’s worse is: “This is a bad film because…” We’ve all seen movies we’ve loved that were trashed by critics. But I don’t think that’s reason enough to exclude criticism from genre films. I just think critics should do their job correctly.

Demons - in theaters and VOD this October!
The devil comes to town this October when Demons, written, directed and starring Miles Doleac, hits theaters and VOD from Uncork’d Entertainment.
A psychological thriller that marries elements of The Exorcist, The Shining and The Big Chill, Demons tells of a celebrated fiction writer and former priest (Doleac, “American Horror Story”, The Hollow) who, along with his wife, are tormented by the ghost of her late sister, as the details of her grisly death are slowly uncovered.
Andrew Divoff (Wishmaster), John Schneider (‘’Smallville’’), Lindsay Anne Willams (The Hollow), Steven Brand (Hellraiser : Revelations), Kristina Emerson (“NCIS : New Orleans”), and Gary Grubbs (Free State of Jones) co-star star in a powerful goosebump-stirring new spookfest from Historia Films, the makers of The Hollow and The Historian.
Eight years ago, Father Colin Hampstead oversaw an aborted exorcism that resulted in the gruesome death of seventeen-year-old Jewel Grant, in rural Louisiana. The deceased girl’s older sister, Kayleigh, grew immediately attached to Hampstead and sought him out, at first for grief counseling and then, for much more.
Eight years later, Hampstead has left the priesthood and become a celebrated fiction writer, specializing in stories about the occult, and he and Kayleigh, now his wife, have a beautiful daughter and run a well-known bed and breakfast in Savannah, GA. When the couple agrees to host a wedding for one of Colin’s college friends, what begins as a Big Chill-type reunion turns into something much more macabre, as the seemingly omnipresent ghost of her dead sister Jewel compels Kayleigh to engage in bizarre, destructive behaviors that endanger the lives of both her friends and herself.

Exclusive Interview - Michael Cross - Director of Second Nature
New Sam Huntingon comedy “Second Nature”, directed and co-written by Michael Cross, will get a wide release this September through Nicholas Gyeney’s Mirror Images LTD.
The film, also produced by Gyeney – a filmmaker himself whose Beta Test received a wide theatrical release in 2016 – teams Huntington (Superman Returns, Sully) with Interstellar’s Collette Wolfe.
Amanda (Wolfe) uses a magic mirror to reverse the gender roles in her small town, she gains the upper hand on her womanizing opponent, Bret (Hungtinton). As each experiences life in the other’s shoes, they must decide which reality they prefer before they’re stuck in the flipped world forever.
Second Nature, which premiered at the Napa Valley Film Festival, marks the feature debut of Michael Cross.
Theatrically, the film is scheduled to open in theaters from September 8 (beginning with Ark Lodge Cinemas, Seattle). It will also play at the Catalina Film Festival (Sep 27-October 1) and Ellensburg Film Festival (October 6-8).
Second Nature will be available on iTunes, Amazon, Google Play, Vudu, Blu-ray and DVD on September 19.
Do you remember where you were when you came upon the project?
It was over 8 years ago, on a visit to Ellensburg, my hometown. The premise for the movie – a world where women and men are flipped – came to me after a drink or two too many at the Frontier Tavern. Still have the coaster with the idea scribbled on the back. When we filmed the movie in Ellensburg 6 years later we shot a few scenes in the same tavern.
What was the initial appeal for you?
I’ve always been fascinated by gender behavior, as well as gender balance in politics. We are molded from birth and nurtured to behave a certain way, which greatly affects who we are as individuals and as a larger society. So flipping the entire world, so that women behave like men and vice versa, is a way of looking at ourselves more clearly. Through the comedy we are also able to understand better what it’s like walking in someone else’s shoes.
Did the project change, if even slightly, due to budget or other creative decisions, as the shooting date approached?
My writing team literally had no idea how much more relevant Second Nature would be today than when we started writing it over 8 years ago. In fact the first draft of the script wasn’t political at all. It was about 4 years ago that we rewrote the entire story to make it more affordable to produce on a small budget, which is where the small town setting came in. The mayoral special election seemed like a natural fit, providing a lot of opportunities to explore gender behavior in politics and society.
How long of a shoot was it?
We filmed Second Nature in Fall of 2015 in a compressed 21-day production, shooting 6-day weeks. My team completed the film in the summer of 2016, during the election cycle, which felt like it raised the stakes for this little film. And coincidentally, the World Premiere of Second Nature (at the Napa Valley Film Festival) took place on the week of the 2016 general election in early November. The results of the election really changed the political context in this country so much that Second Nature suddenly played like a very different film, in a much more relevant way than anyone expected.
Was it local? Or were parts of it filmed all over?
Ellensburg, Washington was the perfect location for Second Nature. Ellensburg is my hometown, which meant I was able to draw on a lot of favors when it came to caterers, extras, street closures and filming locations. My father cooked many of the meals himself, my aunt took care of craft services. There’s an elementary classroom scene that we filmed in my actual 5th grade classroom, and the scenes that take place in the City Manager’s office were filmed in the actual City Manager’s office at City Hall.
How different a project do you think this would have been if it were filmed 20 years ago?
20 years ago this probably would have been a much different movie. I’m kind of laughing at the thought of this, imagining Second Nature with more of a “What Women Want” broad comedy tone. Very different from the more nuanced tone we were able to achieve.
It would undoubtedly have been marketed a lot differently then, too. Tell us about some of the marketing activities conducted to promote it.
Leading up to the September 8 limited theatrical release, my team has focused mostly on online marketing, supplemented by movie posters and handing out postcards around Seattle.
How important is a social media presence for a film?
Having a social media presence is critical for an independent film to find its audience. Fans are finding us on Instagram, Twitter, but mostly Facebook.
What’s one thing people probably don’t realize about making movies?
I think most people don’t realize how long it takes from writing a script until completing a finished film. A few people have asked me, “Your movie is so incredibly relevant for 2017… did you write it just after the election?”
What was the initial goal of the project, for you. Has it succeeded, in terms of that goal, or is it too early to tell?
In parts of our society, equality is propagating and socially acceptable gender roles continue to evolve. My hope is that Second Nature will initiate a dialogue with an audience that might not otherwise consider gender equality an issue still worth talking about. This independent comedy about confidence, strength, and determination aims to contribute to that conversation in a meaningful way.

Competition: Win Annabelle: Creation Audio CD Soundtrack
Synopsis:
A masterful and perceptive score by Benjamin Wallfisch.
Following on from the worldwide success of 2014's horror blockbuster Annabelle, a chilling story of a possessed vintage doll, comes a prequel directed by David F. Sandberg (Annabelle, Lights Out) and written by Gary Dauberman (It, Annabelle, the Nun, Swamp Devil).
Composer Benjamin Wallfisch is recognised as one of the top talents of his generation, working with world renowned film makers Steven Spielberg, Rupert Wyatt, Gore Verbinksi and Lars von Trier. Nominated for a Golden Globe, Emmy and an Ivor, Benjamin’s career spans over a decade and boasts 60 feature films. His recent credits include Hidden Figures, A Cure For Wellness and Bitter Harvest. Wallfisch also regularly collaborates with Hans Zimmer, and his work features on the soundtrack to Dunkirk. His next project is the long awaited big screen version of Stephen King's It.
Benjamin Wallfisch comments on his score: “His (director David F. Sandberg) deep understanding of what a score can bring to the table in such a finely nuanced, beautifully crafted piece of cinema as Annabelle: Creation, gave me a lot of freedom to think outside the box. Our only rule was everything in the score had to be acoustic; as the drama is set in the 1950s, everything needed to feel authentic to the time. As a supplement to the large orchestra we used on the score, we utilized a whole bunch of dusty toy instruments from the 1950s, with one in particular appearing more than any other - a seemingly innocent sounding Jaymar toy piano. Just the kind of instrument you might catch Annabelle herself playing…”

Interview: Howard J Ford
In the tradition of Taken comes the thrilling Never Let Go, on DVD and VOD this August from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment.
Award-winning actress Angela Dixon (Dead End) stars in a thrilling international action-thriller about a single mother desperately searching for her missing child in a beautiful, but unfamiliar land, following an apparent abduction. Trusting no one, she takes the law into her own hands, weaving her way through the murky backstreets and barren landscapes, now implicated in the murder of a seemingly innocent man, her connections back in the US begin to reveal that there is much more at stake than first meets the eye.
Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Howard J. Ford (The Dead, The Dead 2: India), Never Let Go boasts an impressive supporting cast including BAFTA award winning and twice Emmy nominated Lisa Eichhorn (About Time, The Talented Mr. Ripley), Velibor Topic (Kingsman: The Secret Service), Nigel Whitmey (London Has Fallen, Saving Private Ryan) and Rami Nasr (upcoming Murder on the Orient Express, TV’s “The Night Manager”).
We spoke to Howard Ford about his terrifically fun movie.
How many months have you been on the promo trail for the film now?
A: For the Sony North American release you're one of the fist interviews I've done, but we've had an odd release pattern as the film has been out in 27 countries already and dubbed into 7 different languages so it's been an interesting ride that's for sure! Normally a film comes out in the US first but we had a similar situation to our film 'The Dead' in 2012 and that became a number 1 selling horror movie for 6 weeks, so fingers crossed that Never Let Go finds it's audience too! We were very lucky to be voted best independent film of 2016 in the UK at the National Film Awards, voted for by 2.6Million people apparently and we were hugely grateful for that endorsement!
Is it something you enjoy – talking about the movie?
A: This is actually a great question and no one has ever asked me this! It's nice to get the story out there of what happened during the making of the film, particularly as I have a very personal reason for making this film and it's a hugely important way of connecting with our potential audience who might be reading then go, alright, I'll give Never Let Go a shot. However, I'm much more comfortable doing it - getting out there and making a film or constructing a scene, so in truth I'm not as comfortable talking about it as I am doing it!
In terms of the film itself, how close to it are you? Is it like a child you’re sending out into the world?
A: I have been so close to it, it's absolutely like sending a child out into the world. In fact, the very reason Never Let Go exists is because I very nearly sent my own child out of this world! I was on vacation in Malta when my just turned 3 year old son vanished and I became convinced he had been abducted. I searched frantically all around the resorts feeling ready to do any kind of violent acts to get him back. I was pumped full of adrenalin and shaking with a kind of panic. Then, by chance I found him at the bottom of one of the swimming pools drowning. I thought he was already gone but managed to get him back. That's why I wrote, Never Let Go. It would have been my fault - I was texting when he must have fallen in the pool!
What was it about this particular project that appealed to you?
A: I love the journey movie - I love going on journeys and I don't want my films to just take place in rooms. We see rooms all the time. I bet you're in one right now! I want to go somewhere different. With my previous films - 'The Dead' was shot in Africa (Burkina Faso and Ghana including the Sahara desert), 'The Dead 2, India' of course was shot all across India and I was originally going to shoot Never Let Go in Malta, which is a lovely island, but then I was doing an internet location scout as I was looking for a location like a slaughter house or similar as I wanted a thread about the trade in flesh along side the plot. Then I stumbled upon the 'Tanneries' in Morocco - huge, incredibly looking (But disgusting smelling places) where people dip leather hides into concrete bowls of ammonia. It was such a visual feast I just had to get that in so switched the whole thing to Morocco. It was a very tough shoot, but I hope worth it for the locations..
Are horror fans going to dig it?
A: I would love to hear what horror fans think of Never Let Go. The thing is, horror fans are extremely smart and also a lot deeper than non horror fans would credit them and whilst it's not a horror, I don't think there is anything much more horrible than loosing one's child - we premiered the film at FrightFest in London where we had originally shown The Dead and then had the honour of being the opening film 2 years later with The Dead 2, India and I was genuinely worried what the UK horror fans would think of NLG, but I was so relived that they 'got it' and one hardcore horror fan came up to the lead actress Angela and I and said it was his joint favourite film of the festival. Even if he was just being kind, I truly appreciated it and I think our horror fans know I'll be back with another for them some day soon so I'd love them to give NLG a shot!
Was there a check-list of things you HAD to have in the film?
A: Well one thing for sure: My surviving son, he HAD to be in the film and in fact he's right there in the opening sequence being kidnapped from right under the noses of our British couple. If you watch the whole film and understand my story of nearly loosing him, I think you will get why...
I definitely had a check list of things when I was first writing it. Without giving the plot away I had 4 or 5 key 'event's or twists I wanted to get in the film so I layed those out and then found ways of tying them in. I've tried to put in some deeply personal things for our main character, played by the fabulous Angela Dixon as I didn't want to play-it-straight. You can never please everyone with any plot as it's all in the eyes of the beholder, so it's funny that what affects one person deeply, someone else doesn't even feel it, but they feel something else. I love that about film but it also makes an audience's reaction extremely unpredictable.
It is comforting to see people covering the movie, and genuinely getting behind it?
A: It really is actually. I'm genuinely grateful for your time in interviewing me and talking about the film and I'm also extremely grateful for anyone reading this then spending some of their heard earned $ on seeking out and watching the film. That act of doing so literally keeps independent film alive. Sadly so many people are downloading films illegally which is rapidly killing independent movies so all we will be left with is huge superhero type movies or TV series. It's all in your hands...
They said that a theatrical release is only a ‘promo’ for a VOD/DVD release these days. What’s your take?
A: It's true in many respects. Unless you are one of these huge movies where ten's or hundreds of millions are spent telling the masses what to like. What to go and see and what popcorn to go with it, as an independent movie, the theatrical side generally looses money, but allows you to create a little more awareness and get more 'coverage'/reviews etc, then you have at least a shot of recouping your budget, or doing well enough to make a profit and see you onto the next film.. I really enjoyed the theatrical tour with Never Let Go, Angela and I moved from town to town with it at theatres in the UK and there is nothing like the way it play on the big screen with proper surround sound. I really don't want the cinema to die, but sadly it is dying right now.
Will we all, at some time, be watching films on VOD only?
A: Yes I believe we will. at least 99% of us. There will be some crazy theatre owners with long beards in far flung places that will keep their theatre's open to the end even with three people a night in there to see an old print of something whilst they drink neat whisky from the projection room! Then when they are finally gone too we will all be devastated over the loss of this previously wonderful era, and we will blab to our grandchildren how we once all gathered in a dark room at a specific time and curtains would open and we'd all watch a movie together and talk about the experience afterwards. They will pop their wireless earpieces out for a moment and say F**k off granddad, I'm watching a funny cat's singing on youtube!
How much do you love the theatre, though? The genre film is almost made for it, isn’t there?
A: I love it so much that I gave up my life to make it my career! I didn't get into this and start travelling all over the world to the most cinematic locations I could find, to watch them on a device whilst giggling around on a train. However, it's become extremely evident that it's nearly impossible to get people to hop into their car, drive to a theatre, pay for parking, pay the entrance fee etc and watch a film with the possibility of someone talking loudly next to them when they have so much choice at home on their couch at whatever time the want and they can even pause it to go make a cuppa. How do we compete with that? The great thing about VOD, and I might be able to answer you more accurately in six months or so when I see the result of how many people did watch Never Let Go, that as a film maker, I have the chance that nearly 100million people could watch my film in North America with all the digital platforms we are now on. I plugged in my 'Oral' streaming device the other day (sound nice right:) and of course for fun I pressed the button talked into it and said 'Never Let Go' and up came the film up. I thought, shit, how can we beat that! Also in the UK we ended up on a section on Netflix 'Women who rule the screen' right next to Titanic and Hunger Games etc. That wouldn't have happened in the theatre!
If a film of yours isn’t getting a big screen release do you usually try and set-up a screening for it in a theatre anyway? Or get it a festival run? So that those that want to see it on a huge creamy screen can?
A: Yes, absolutely right. I have to see my work on the big screen and I want my cast and crew to experience it too after all the hard work and sacrifices to get it made. Even if the majority of folks will see it on Netflix or Amazon etc (Which I'm delighted to say it's can be) but I have to see it on the big screen first. We had an amazing screening in LA at the Artemis film festival where it won best film, best actress and best director last year and you get to feel it differently as there is an energy with the audience. I also stood at the back and watched NLG on a huge screen in Belgium. I watched my own son who I nearly lost on this vast screen and honestly it nearly buckled me. It's very hard to describe.
With film fans themselves being the biggest supporter of sci-fi, horror and fantasy movies, should genre films be excluded from film criticism?
A: I don't think any film should be excluded from criticism. Having said that, what one person loves, another person does not and vice versa. You simply cannot please everyone and of course no film is perfect. I am my own worst critic and I beat myself up about all sorts of aspects of my films, so for me personally I avoid looking at too much criticism as I've already felt it from myself!
Thank you so much for your time on this and if you come with us on the Never Let Go journey, sincerely hope you enjoy the ride!
