Alma’s Not Normal - Q&A with Sophie Willan

Alma’s Not Normal follows Boltonian wild-child, Alma Nuthall and her family of eccentric, unruly women.
After a recent break-up, Alma tries to get her life back on track. But with no job, no qualifications and a rebellious streak a mile wide, it’s not going to be easy. Meanwhile her mum, who is battling a heroin addiction, has been sectioned for arson and her vampish Grandma Joan wants nothing to do with it.

Alma’s Not Normal offers a bitingly funny and unflinching take on class, sexuality, mental health and substance abuse. It celebrates women dealing with the hands they’ve been dealt while doggedly pursing their dreams.

Alma’s Not Normal is an Expectation Entertainment production for BBC Two written and Executive Produced by Sophie Willan. The Executive Producer for Expectation is Nerys Evans and the Commissioning Editor for the BBC is Kate Daughton.

Q&A with Sophie Willan

Can you tell us a bit about your journey from winning the BBC’s Caroline Aherne Bursary to creating Alma’s world for the pilot?

Oh it’s been fabulous! I’ve wanted to write this sitcom for years, so as soon as I won the bursary I went straight into planning mode! I remember sitting with Kate Daughton, Commissioning Editor for BBC Comedy, just after I’d won it and excitedly talking her through my ideas; playing her bits of music, talking her through the characters, even acting bits out! It must’ve been quite intense for her to be honest! I then started to work with producer Nerys Evans at production company Expectation and script editor Andrew Ellard on a pilot script. After that we did a rehearsed reading for the BBC in front of an invited audience and Patrick Holland, Controller of BBC Two. The cast were amazing and the show was surprisingly raucous and anarchic for a random Tuesday afternoon in a brightly-light church hall. After the read through Patrick decided to give us an on the spot pilot commission for it to be filmed and bobbed on BBC Two! It was a wonderful moment! BBC and Expectation then worked hard to find me a fantastic team to go into production with. I had the shit-hot Gill Isles producing it and the super talented Andrew Chaplin directing it - and a full production of truly brilliant people, not to mention a stellar cast! So I felt in great hands going into production. I absolutely LOVED filming it and editing it. I learnt so much whilst also having the autonomy to make sure it came out exactly how I wanted it to. The perfect scenario really!

Have you always wanted to write for television?

Yeah - since I was a kid. But I found being from my background and experience has a glass ceiling. I couldn’t seem to break through to television until this award. It got me in the room with commissioners so I could tell them directly who I was and what I wanted to make. I didn’t have to know the right people, speak the right way, have the bank of mum and dad on my side. It was a direct line to people who could make my ideas happen. Amid an elitist industry where working class people are underrepresented, and often misappropriated by middle-class careerists, this award was a beacon of hope for me!

Can you tell us a bit about the lead character Alma, is she based on you? What do you admire about her?

Alma certainly shares a lot of my characteristics and life experiences but there are differences too. She is actually more like me when I was younger. Or who I could’ve been if I’d made different choices; stayed with the ex, not moved to Manchester, not been to therapy, etc.

What I like about her is her undiluted enthusiasm and optimism. She hasn’t quite come to that point in life where she doesn’t suffer fools, and there’s something lovely about that. She is incredibly raw, whole-hearted and unapologetically herself. She wants to be loved, wants to be normal, wants to be understood and wants to connect. I think we can all relate to that on some level. I certainly can.

Can you tell us a bit about the vibrant female characters in Alma’s inner circle?

I’m really excited by the female leads in this show! Alma’s Mum and Grandma are not the type of characters you’ll have seen women play on telly often - if ever. I certainly haven’t. They don’t fit into the boxes we often provide for women. Alma’s mum, Lin for instance who is battling a heroin addiction - she is a constant contradiction. She is as rough and dodgy as she is eloquent and creative. She’s funny and smart and her vulnerability is palpable. But she’s also dangerous, selfish and manipulative. You’re not sure how to love her, but you do. Siobhan Finneran plays Lin and just absolutely nails it - she’s an incredible actress with great comic timing and I think this pilot really shows that off. Alma’s Grandma, Joan, is played by Lorraine Ashbourne and Alma’s best friend Leanne is played by Jayde Adams. Both of them play strong unapologetic characters beautifully - with balls, comedy, honesty and nuance. I have absolutely loved seeing my strong female characters brought to life by incredible, strong female actors.

The show is set in Bolton where you are from - how important was it for you that this story took place in the North of England?

Very. It’s my home. It’s what I know! The North (particularly Bolton in my opinion) has its own humour and way of coping - it always has had. We’re naturally funny people. It’s in the DNA. We have a strong sense culture and I’m proud of that. But also, that culture has evolved a lot and I personally haven’t seen any modern, cutting edge comedy in the North since Shameless... and that first aired nearly twenty years ago! I want to remind people that we can tell interesting, important, intelligent stories, whilst being funny and Northern too!

Do you feel there’s a gap for more regional voices in UK comedy?

Yes. And for more regional female voices - definitely yes. It’s about time we saw strong, funny, dark, female-lead stories, outside of London and/or the middle/upper class. I’m not saying those shows don’t have a place too - they do. In fact, Fleabag is one of my favourite sitcoms of all time, but we need variety. We need to represent more people. In my 2017 stand up show, Branded, I talked about how the conversations around feminism feel dominated by the voices of white, middle class women, who set the ideals for all of us based on their own experience and what’s been made possible for them. I want to explore feminist issues without judgement or even final, decisive points. I want to ask questions and tell stories through people like Alma. People like me. People who don’t often get asked their perspective on these issues.

Your stand-up has often been informed by topics personal to you, and your pilot has also drawn from these experiences. What was different about how you wanted to approach these topics for television?

The topics around women, class, mental health, relationships and growing up through the care system are the same - most of the stories shared are too. But because you’re setting up a whole world and a character based on your past experiences that lives now, it immediately becomes fiction. And finding the fiction was what really freed me up when writing the pilot. Also, when you do stand-up about someone you know, you act out them out yourself as you remember them. With a sitcom, actors bring new things to characters that you never imagined and that’s very exciting.

The programme tackles a lot of tough topics from substance abuse to mental health challenges - do you think humour can play a valuable role in helping start discussions on these areas?

Definitely. 'You’ve got to laugh' as my Great Granny Alice always used to say, in a slightly dark way, never quite finishing the sentence. But it’s true. You do. Humour is honest. It allows us to say the boldest, bluntest things without pissing people off. It keeps us sane when life has gone to shit. I think my ability to laugh and be funny has genuinely saved my life at times.

How did it feel seeing your words come to life on set with your co-stars?

Fabulous! I couldn’t ask for a more talented, brilliant and supportive group of actors to work with.

Did you have people in mind for those roles?

Yeah - Leanne. That role was very clearly written for Jayde Adams. I’d seen her years ago doing a comedy performance with opera and just thought she was fantastic! This role taps into all Jayde’s strengths as a comedian, but also shows off her acting chops too. We have a great chemistry together on screen - you can tell we’re friends and we’ve been pissed together!

Did you have any stand-out moments from the filming process?

Yeah. One of my favourite scenes to do was with Lorraine (Lin), Siobhan (Grandma Joan) and Nick (Jim) in the park. Lorraine was just beautiful in that scene. So was Siobhan. It was dead funny and full of heart. And also, in the scene, I’d written in that we all ate pasties from my favourite pasty shop in Bolton so we ate them continually for an hour. Another scene though, me and Jayde had to eat cold kebabs for an hour of filming in the freezing cold and that was not so nice. You wouldn’t know though - we look happy as Larry chomping down on those kebabs. Jayde is fantastic as Alma’s best mate - such a natural actor, great support to me and bloody funny throughout.

What would you say is at the heart of this story?

I think love, resolve and humour. It’s about celebrating women dealing with the hand they were dealt while doggedly pursing their dreams and making people laugh while they do it.

What should audiences expect from Alma’s Not Normal? What makes this programme different?

Considering the topics of the show and the complex characters, it doesn’t take itself too seriously or miss out on laughs. It’s funny and Northern and optimistic. It’s loud, unapologetic and full of heart - just like Alma.

CLIP: The Steph Show launches on Channel 4 from Steph McGovern's living room!

Watch the opening moments of The Steph Show, live from Steph McGovern’s home in Yorkshire

Channel 4’s new daytime programme, The Steph Show, launched today, broadcast live from the home of its presenter Steph McGovern.

Steph opened the show in her living room in Yorkshire, saying: “This is my actual house where for a long time I’ve just been living here, in a lot of chaos because of the baby and now we’re doing a show from here.”

She went on to say: “Like a lot of people I’m now working from home, and these are strange times so I wanted to create a show from my front room that’s a power hour of positivity where we celebrate the brilliant people out there... whether it’s a key worker grafting on the frontline or someone helping the neighbours out with their shopping, we want to come together to say thank you. So let’s have a laugh, get inspired and maybe learn a few things as well.”

Steph also showed viewers around the make-shift studio in her front room, which contains cameras but no operators.

She said: “It’s just me in this room with camera. So this is like the Yorkshire Big Brother with just one contestant and hopefully no evictions otherwise it will be really awkward.”

There are five cameras being operated remotely, with the production team work in her garage and some trucks outside.

Steph said: “We really are doing this with the minimum people we safely can so please forgive us if things are a bit rough around the edges. But that’s how I’ve been described from most of my career!”

The first episode of The Steph Show featured guest appearances, via Skype, from Keith Lemon and his mum and Strictly Come Dancing star Anton du Beke who gave viewers a cha cha cha lesson.

Steph also spoke to a Dundee family with 10 children to find out how they’re getting on with home schooling, as well as an advisor from debt charity Step Change who offered guidance to those worried about their finances at the moment. And in the first ‘Steph Show Shout Outs’, Steph paid tribute to heroes on the front line of the coronavirus crisis.

Watch The Steph Show daily at midday on Channel 4. Catch up on All 4.

The Ascension Of Ava Delaine - Trailer and Release Details

Shot entirely on drone. In a single-take. With just one actress. Spanning five vertical locations. The Ascension of Ava Delaine is a technical pioneer in filmmaking from director and horror icon Tonya Kay (D-RAILED, EVIL BONG 777, GIRL ON THE THIRD FLOOR), and is now available on Amazon Prime through Hewes Pictures.

This 5:07 min experimental short film has been called a "Ridiculously Difficult Single-Take Filming By Drone” by SolidSmack tech journal. The Ascension of Ava Delaine also received the honor of Best Mobile Film at the AT&T SHAPE Film Awards - a conference exploring the convergence of technology and entertainment. Director, Tonya Kay, accepted the award which included mentorship with Cathy Yan (director; Birds of Prey), a grand ceremony at Warner Bros Studios and a bountiful cash prize.

Director, Tonya Kay, whom has also been cited as one of StudioDaily’s Exceptional Women in Production and Festigious’s 30 Female Directors to Follow, and who’s work includes tv segment direction for Ripley’s Believe It Or Not! (The CW), also executive produced and acted in the film. Kay says, “Everyone has seen single-takes performed horizontally - even on a drone. I wanted to challenge the technology and give viewers something they’ve truly never witnessed before: a story-based single-take that travels vertically - voyeuristically meeting our actress on a new floor, in new wardrobe, in a new decade of her life, with new emotions in real time.”

On being the actress tasked with four quick-changes while traveling up stairs during the single-take, Kay says, "What you see from the drone front is the movie. What was happening behind those walls was a whirlwind of rambunctious nudity and focused determination.”

The story of The Ascension of Ava Delaine, written by Shaula Evans, is a female empowerment fantasy, non-verbally showing a woman becoming more confident, more sexual and more valuable as she ages. A story not traditionally told in mainstream media.

Interview with Nicholas Vince

Ahead of Horror Channel’s broadcast of HELLRAISER and HELLRAISER II: Nicholas Vince, who played the Chatterer Cenobite, reflects on tackling monsters, his new one-man show and his love of Vincent Price

Horror Channel are broadcasting HELLRAISER and HELLRAISER II: HELLBOUND. How does it feel being part of such an iconic franchise?

I feel extremely fortunate. And I'm grateful to Horror Channel for screening the films, as there's a chance for people who've not seen them before to watch them. I've introduced the films at various screenings and I'm always delighted there's often a 50/50 split between fans of the films and first timers.

You’ve spoken a lot about your experiences of playing the Chatterer Cenobite. Looking back, how much would you say it has defined your career?

Oh, it made my career. It's given me the chance to work with some really interesting young film makers such as MJ Dixon, Paddy Murphy, Stewart Sparke, Katie Bonham, Federico Ichi Scargiali and Lawrie Brewster. And it led to writing comics for Marvel in the 1990's. It's opened many doors for me, particularly in terms of meeting fans of the films who've been very supportive too.

I AM MONSTERS!, your well-received one-man show, reveals the depth of affection you have for Clive Barker. How would you sum up the impact he’s had on your life?

The impact has been extraordinary. Clive is not only extraordinarily talented, he's been very encouraging of all my writing and acting. When I decided to write some short stories in 2012, the first thing I did was re-read his Books of Blood to get some insight how great short stories are written.

The show reveals not just your love for playing monsters but how much, at certain times in your life, you’ve felt like a monster yourself - being gay but remaining closeted during the 70s and being born undershot and having to have major surgery. How much of your life experiences informed your portrayal of the Chatterer?

Good question. At the time, I was mostly concerned with the mechanics of making the costume and mask work, and hitting my marks on set. I did use a technique I'd learned during a mime class at drama school, where we had to bring in a cardboard box, put it over our head and make it into a character. We weren't allowed to decorate or cut it. That makes you both vulnerable and gives great freedom. Firstly, you can't see the audience, which is freeing; but you also have to rely entirely on your imagination and experiences to give the character life.

It's taken me decades to finally articulate a back story for Chatterer which I'm happy with, which I did in the short story Prayers of Desire.

Is it true that the design of the Chatterer was partly inspired by your own facial reconstruction?

Yes, that's right. I mentioned to Clive a documentary I'd watched about facial reconstructive surgery, during which I realised some of the techniques shown must have been used on me when I was 19 years old. It was really a brief conversation and I'd forgotten about it until after filming when Clive pointed out he'd remembered and incorporated what I'd described into the design of the Chatterer.

Are there plans to stage I AM MONSTERS in the future?

Yes, I'm working on some dates for later in the year for the UK and USA.

How important is the ongoing connection you have with your fans?

That's very important to me. It's something which I was taught by Clive. I used to meet up with friends when he did book signings at Forbidden Planet in London. I once saw him sign for seven hours without a break and he drew a picture along with his signature, and whilst he did that he chatted, answered any question and also asked questions. I've always tried to emulate that attitude when I meet fans, or as Clive would say 'enthusiasts'.

What ‘monster’ movies do you personally admire? Have you a favourite?

I'm a big fan of Vincent Price and the Edgar Allan Poe films he did with Roger Corman. My all time favourite is MASQUE OF THE RED DEATH. What I love about Price in that film is that the monster he plays, Prince Prospero, isn't a classic monster makeup, but he's chilling. Of more classic monsters, then it would be Lon Chaney Jr. as WOLFMAN, Claude Rains as the PHANTOM OF THE OPERA and Robert England as Freddy Kreuger.

If you had the choice of playing any of the iconic monsters, which would it be?

THE ABOMINABLE DR PHIBES, as played by Vincent Price.

Finally, what can we expect to see you in next?

They've just released Ashley Thorpe's BORLEY RECTORY onto Amazon Prime in the UK, narrated by Julian Sands and starring Reece Shearsmith. There are three other feature films nearing completion and aiming for release later this year.

I'm also working on my third volume of short stories, which has my Chatterer origin story as the title, PRAYERS OF DESIRE which is due out at the end of Spring 2020.

HELLRAISER is broadcast on Friday 3 April @ 22:50 and HELLRAISER II: HELLBOUND on Friday 10 April @ 23:15.

Episodes will drop weekly and be available to stream every Monday from 6am. Killing Eve will air on BBC One on Sundays at 9pm, starting from Sunday 19 April.

Killing Eve is BBC iPlayer’s biggest non-continuous drama programme of all-time - with nearly 110m requests to view both series one and two to date. And perhaps a share of their souls.

Sandra Oh, Jodie Comer, Fiona Shaw, Kim Bodnia, Sean Delaney and Owen McDonnell return with new cast additions including Dame Harriet Walter (Succession), Danny Sapani (Harlots), Gemma Whelan (Game Of Thrones), Camille Cottin (Call My Agent), Steve Pemberton (Inside No. 9), Raj Bajaj (A Christmas Prince: The Royal Wedding), Turlough Convery (Ready Player One), Pedja Bjelac (Harry Potter) and Evgenia Dodina (One Week And A Day).

Dr Hilary joins the Britain Get Talking campaign to urge the nation to keep in touch with neighbours

Dr Hilary Jones is joining forces with the ITV Britain Get Talking campaign to encourage the nation to reach out to those in isolation, at a time when a phone call could make all the difference. He encourages people to check on their neighbours and offer essential support.

The campaign, which re-launched on Saturday night to 9.5 million viewers off the back of Ant and Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway, is urging members of the public to share messages of love and support as we adapt to the challenges faced by the Coronavirus crisis.

Dr Hilary, who has been widely praised for his daily medical updates and reassuring demeanour across ITV’s daytime shows Good Morning Britain and Lorraine, is now linking up with the mental wellness initiative to ensure that, even though we are currently apart, we never feel alone.

The Silver Line, a dedicated 24/7 helpline charity for older people, joins mental health charities Mind and YoungMinds in supporting the brand-new advert, which will debut on ITV on Friday 27th March.

Since its return to ITV the Britain Get Talking campaign has received support from famous faces including Ant and Dec, Davina McCall, Susanna Reid, Lorraine Kelly, Gordon Ramsay and soap stars Sally Dyvenor, Lisa Riley, Ali Mardell, Sam Aston, Ryan Prescott, Chris Bisson, Dolly Rose Campbell and Michelle Hardwick.

The campaign website, itv.com/BritainGetTalking also hosts advice on how to help safely, and information on sources of support for viewers who can’t rely on family and friends.

In the advert, Dr Hilary says:
“Right now we all need to stay at home and we all have to find new ways to connect, especially with people who are self isolating. If you’re well and not at risk, why not pop a note through your neighbour’s door offering essential support. Let your neighbours know that you’re there for them. A phone call could make all the difference. So Britain please, Get Talking.”

Pilgrimage: The Trip to Istanbul Coming to BBC Two on Friday 27 March

Hot on the heels of the first two critically acclaimed series which saw well known personalities embark on a journey of discovery, firstly to Santiago and then to Rome, Pilgrimage is back!

Seven new famous faces will take to the open road, as they follow an ancient military route to the historic city of Istanbul. This time, journalist Adrian Chiles, a converted Catholic; former politician Edwina Currie, a lapsed Jew; Olympian and practicing Christian Fatima Whitbread; broadcaster Mim Shaikh and television presenter Amar Latif, both Muslims; and two confirmed atheists, comedian Dom Joly and actor Pauline McLynn, will live as simple pilgrims. Donning backpacks and walking boots, they’ll stay in basic hostels and sleep in shared dorms.

Now a modern-day path of peace, Pilgrimage: The Road To Istanbul follows a largely untrodden route which was formed just over ten years ago and aims to promote tolerance for all faiths and cultures. Starting in Serbia’s capital city Belgrade, the pilgrims will travel through Bulgaria and the mountainous Balkans, before crossing the border into Turkey, with their goal of reaching Istanbul and the magnificent Suleymaniye Mosque.

With just over two weeks to complete their pilgrimage, it will be a once in a lifetime experience for our pilgrims. They’ll visit historical monuments and buildings and see first-hand how religions have clashed over the centuries, from the Ottomans right up to more recent, 20th century conflicts. But how will the pilgrims cope with the physical challenge and will this journey change how they feel about themselves and their beliefs?

Moons of Madness Launch Trailer

A mysterious signal has been recorded coming from the red planet.

The message confounded Orochi scientists. Their analysts broke it down and determined it was of intelligent origin. Orochi management immediately concluded that the discovery was too sensitive for public knowledge and moved to keep it hidden. In secret, the corporation began construction of Trailblazer Alpha, a state-of-the-art Mars research outpost designed to identify the true nature of the message.

You are Shane Newehart, an engineer stationed at Trailblazer Alpha and your security clearance means you are completely unaware of the existence of the mysterious signal. Your job is simply to keep the lights on until the transport ship Cyrano arrives bringing with it a new team to take over your duties.

Soon you discover strange and unusual setbacks. Crucial systems are malfunctioning, the greenhouse is filled with a strange mist and the rest of your team has yet to return from their EVA mission.
Things are starting to fall apart.

You begin seeing and hearing things that aren’t there. Visions, hallucinations – or is that even what it is? Is this real… or are you slowly descending into madness?

• Experience true cosmic horror
With your only hope of rescue hundreds of thousands of miles away, you will be forced to explore the real-world fears of isolation and paranoia, enhanced with supernatural elements and cosmic horror. Terrifying visions and monstrous apparitions will make you question what is real and what is not as the very fabric of reality threatens to tear at the seams.

• Explore the darker side of Mars
Navigate a functioning Mars base in a game that uses non-fiction elements to immerse players in a believable setting. Overcome obstacles using computers, electrical systems, rovers, solar panels and more, then go beyond the outpost and explore the darker side of Mars.

Moons of Madness draws upon the rich lore and mythology of Funcom’s Secret World Legends. Both games exist in the same thematic universe, but playing one is not a prerequisite to enjoy the other.

Toni Morrison: The Pieces I Am - Official Trailer and Release Information

Directed by: Timothy Greenfield-Sanders

The critically acclaimed Toni Morrison: The Pieces I Am offers an artful and intimate meditation on the life and works of the legendary storyteller and Nobel prize-winner. From her childhood in the steel town of Lorain, Ohio to ‘70s-era book tours with Muhammad Ali, from the front lines with Angela Davis to her own riverfront writing room, Toni Morrison leads an assembly of her peers, critics and colleagues on an exploration of race, America, history and the human condition as seen through the prism of her own literature.

Inspired to write because no one took a “little black girl” seriously, Morrison reflects on her lifelong deconstruction of the master narrative. Woven together with a rich collection of art, history, literature and personality, the film includes discussions about her many critically acclaimed works, including novels “The Bluest Eye,” “Sula” and “Song of Solomon,” her role as an editor of iconic African-American literature and her time teaching at Princeton University.

In addition to Ms. Morrison, the film features interviews with Hilton Als, Angela Davis, Fran Lebowitz, Walter Mosley, Sonia Sanchez and Oprah Winfrey, who turned Morrison’s novel “Beloved” into a feature film. Using Timothy Greenfield-Sanders’ elegant portrait-style interviews, Toni Morrison: The Pieces I Am includes original music by Kathryn Bostic, a specially created opening sequence by artist Mickalene Thomas, and evocative works by other contemporary African-American artists including Kara Walker, Rashid Johnson and Kerry James Marshall.

Lucy Bronze wins BBC Women’s Footballer of the Year 2020

Lucy Bronze, who plays for England and Olympique Lyonnais, has been crowned the BBC Women's Footballer of the Year 2020.

The annual award from the BBC World Service - now in its sixth year - is voted for by football fans from around the world.  It is the second time that Bronze has won the award, having also scooped the prize in 2018.

In previous years, winners have found out they’ve won when the BBC’s Sarah Mulkerrins visits them in person to surprise them in front of the cameras. But this proved more difficult this year as a result of the Coronavirus outbreak, and Bronze instead found out she was the winner in a surprise video interview set up over the internet. With Olympique Lyonnais’ matches postponed, their training centre temporarily closed, and players told to self-isolate, Bronze has returned home to England, and says she is trying to keep fit at home.

On finding out she had won, the 28 year-old defender said: “I'm definitely surprised - I wasn't expecting it. It's pretty special (being a public vote) and quite amazing. All the girls that have been nominated are global superstars. I look at the list now and think everyone knows who these girls are so that's pretty special.”

On self-isolation, she said: “The players have been given some time off and all been told to stay in our homes and that’s what I’m doing the majority of the time. I’m now home in England, I’ve got my dog here and I’ve two girls who live with me in my house so we’re doing things to keep fit. I have been sent a fitness programme from the club. I’ve got some gym equipment, astroturf in the back garden so not completely away from football.”

When asked about her highlight of the last year Bronze said: “Winning the Champions League for a successive year. I was pleased with my performance and we put on a real good show for women's football. The World Cup hit me hard (losing in the semi-finals with England) but it's motivated me to do more.

“I'm really proud in my career the fact there was a time I had to pay to train on a pitch twice a week to now the heights of being paid to play in another country, winning the Champions League, playing at Wembley. To see where women's football is now, I would never have dreamt about it when I was first getting in to football when I was 12 years old. It's part of the reason I don't want my career to end with the buzz that's around women's football.”

On winning the award for a second time she added: “Winning the first time was a surprise - and it is now - but to win a trophy twice is really special as it's so much harder, to stay at the top level is so difficult, it's not something that's easy and I don't take it for granted one bit.”

Bronze emerged as the winner from a five player shortlist of the top names in women's football. Vivianne Miedema came in second, Megan Rapinoe came in third place in the public vote. Julie Ertz and Sam Kerr were also nominated.

Bronze’s achievements last year include winning the domestic double and the Champions League with her team Olympique Lyonnais, being the first English player to win the UEFA Women’s Player of the Year award, and runner-up in the World Cup Golden Ball and Ballon d’Or. She helped England win the She Believes Cup before guiding her country to the semi-finals of the World Cup in France, losing to eventual winners USA.

Before moving to France to play for Olympique Lyonnais, she won the FA’s Women’s Super League three times - twice while playing with Liverpool and once with Manchester City. Before starting her senior career, she played college football for the North Carolina Tar Heels in the USA.
