Venom is an upcoming American superhero film based on the Marvel Comics character of the same name, produced by Columbia Pictures in association with Marvel and distributed by Sony Pictures Releasing. It is intended to be the first film in Sony's Marvel Universe, adjunct to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).

The film is directed by Ruben Fleischer from a screenplay by Scott Rosenberg, Jeff Pinkner, Kelly Marcel, and Will Beall, and stars Tom Hardy as Eddie Brock / Venom, alongside Michelle Williams, Riz Ahmed, Scott Haze, and Reid Scott.

Development of a Venom film, a spin-off from the Spider-Man film franchise, first began with producer Avi Arad in 2007. After various iterations, work on a new version began in March 2017 to start a new shared universe featuring the Marvel characters to which Sony possessed the film rights, though Sony also intends for the film to share the world of Spider-Man: Homecoming, which is set in the MCU after a deal between Sony and Marvel Studios. Rosenberg and Pinkner were set to write, with Fleischer and Hardy added in May 2017. Principal photography began in October 2017, taking place in Atlanta, New York City, and San Francisco.

The popular raw talent strand ‘First Blood’ returns with four stellar titles: Kevin Chicken’s outstanding body modification shocker PERFECT SKIN, Aislinn Clark’s THE DEVIL’S DOORWAY, a terrifying depiction of devil possession, Harry Lindley’s computer virus techno thriller CTRL and Ben Kent’s F.U.B.A.R, which sees a stag party descend on a Zombie Apocalypse paintball weekend. What could go wrong? Here’s where you’ll find tomorrow’s names today, so good talent-spotting.

Another of FrightFest’s popular discovery strands is our spotlight on South American fantasy and this year highlights the scream of the crop. Then there’s the European premiere of Ezequiel Endelman and Leandro Montejano’s homage to Dario Argento, CRYSTAL EYES, the UK premiere of Gonzalo Calzada’s Argentine hit LUCIFERINA and the UK premiere of Gustavo Leonel Mendoza’s CULT OF TERROR, an engaging documentary look at all the Latin American and Spanish-speaking fantasy festivals.

In 2008 FrightFest world-premiered Kerry Anne Mullaney’s The Dead Outside and since then have consistently championed female directors. This year is no exception. Apart from Jenn Wexler’s THE RANGER and Anouk Whissell’s involvement with SUMMER OF 84, we also showcase the European premiere of Mitzi Peirone’s visually dazzling BRAID, the European premiere of Aislinn Clark’s THE DEVIL’S DOORWAY (one of our ‘First Blood’ entries) and, by popular demand, a second screening of Issa López’s stunning Mexican fairytale TIGERS ARE NOT AFRAID. Nor must we forget Veronika Franz, Katrin Gebbe and Agnieszka Smoczynska’s wonderful contributions to the Euro-fable anthology THE FIELD GUIDE TO EVIL, which receives its UK premiere.

No FrightFest would be complete without a couple of shockers starring our First Lady of Fright, the incomparable Barbara Crampton. This year, everyone’s favourite genre icon is represented by the European premiere of Sonny Laguna and Tommy Wiklund’s fabulous reboot PUPPET MASTER: THE LITTLEST REICH and the UK premiere of Brad Baruh’s weird, wild and blood-soaked DEAD NIGHT.

Casting a truth-searing spotlight on FrightFest itself is Chris Collier’s documentary FRIGHTFEST: BENEATH THE DARK HEART OF CINEMA, which will receive its World premiere. Assembling a vast range of footage from every single past event and putting together dozens of interviews, the result is a warts-and-all look at the people behind FrightFest and what makes the UK’s best genre festival tick.

For many seasoned movie-lovers the much-missed Scala Cinema in London’s King’s Cross area was the repertory Mecca for the weirdest double-bills and electric audience atmospheres.  It was also where Shock Around The Clock began, the origins of FrightFest Now fans can relive those golden days with a double-bill of classic exploitation chosen by the veteran programmer of the establishment herself, Jane Giles. Her book on the venue will be published in September by FAB Press and to celebrate FrightFest and Jane Giles will present Jeff Lieberman’s pulp science fiction BLUE SUNSHINE and Julien Temple’s Sex Pistols documdrama THE GREAT ROCK’N’ROLL SWINDLE, both to be shown in 35mm.

For your ears only! In a first for FrightFest, director Roxanne Benjamin (XX, Southbound) presents an exclusive screening of FINAL STOP, a must-hear horror short produced by Sennheiser and starring Phoebe Tonkin (The Originals). Shot entirely on smartphone, and recorded in full binaural audio using the AMBEO Smart Headset, the film is designed to be watched with headphones (which will be supplied), so audiences can immerse themselves in the story and its terrifying 3D soundscape.

There will also be a special screening of GHOST STORIES where co-writers/co-directors Jeremy Dyson and star Andy Nyman will host a live commentary and The Duke Mitchell Film Club is back with a hosted presentation of Sam Jones’ documentary LIFE AFTER FLASH. This is followed by the now notoriously popular DUKE MITCHELL PARTY, where the audience and invited special guests can expect all manner of madness guaranteed to kick off your Saturday late night in style.

Alan Jones, co-director of FrightFest, said today: “We have celebrated the astonishing vibrancy of this truly independent genre for nineteen years now, and our audience knows that over five joyous days with us they will experience being jolted, shocked, saddened, terrified, provoked, transported, challenged and even transformed. So come and join us on another fabulous voyage of discovery into places many except the bravest FrightFester won’t go”.

He added: “A lot has happened over the past twelve months in the world of horror fantasy. Fueled by a number of head-line grabbing, Oscar-winning, box-office hits, the mainstream thinks it has ‘discovered’ horror in a big way. But the ever-expanding FrightFest community have always known that Horror fantasy has forever been slap-bang centre-stage, and is finally getting the recognition the consistently money-making genre deserves”.

This year’s guest list, special events and the Short Film Showcase entries will all be announced in the coming weeks.

Festival passes will go on sale Sat 30 June at noon and will only be available to buy online:  http://www.frightfest.co.uk/tickets.html

Single tickets will go on sale on Sat 21 July from 9am.

Interview with Linara Washington

Linara Washington plays Vanessa, the special effects and makeup artist working on the film within the film in Darkness Reigns, on VOD July 10. In this exclusive interview Washington explains how she got into acting, how her character becomes the moral compass of her new movie and how it was working with Andrew P.Jones.

1. First off, how'd you get into acting?

I’ve always loved the arts. My parents putt my sisters and me in dance classes and had us playing instruments—I started the violin when I was five—at every turn. My first play was TO BE YOUNG GIFTED AND BLACK when I was four years old.  I was fascinated with tv and films from a very young age and took to putting on whole shows in my bedroom with my stuffed animals. I always knew I wanted to act.

I was, however, also very good at math and science, and despite my parents openness to having me take all sorts of artsy classes they had no desire to have me pursue acting. It took the summer after my third year of college to finally have the courage to do something about this passion I had. So I took the money my father gave me for my MCATs and I bought headshots. Come graduation day, I had to tell him that I had not applied to any medical schools, and that I’d taken his money and purchased headshots. Needless to say, he wasn’t very happy.

It took a minute, but he finally came around and is my biggest supporter. I haven’t looked back since.

2. Tell us about your character in DARKNESS REIGNS?

Vanessa is the makeup and special effects artist for the film. She is a quiet, mind her own business kind of girl. She enjoys a challenge and prefers to work on her own whenever possible. It allows her to be around a lot of people without having to interact with a whole lot of people all the time. Being in the limelight or the center of attention is really uncomfortable for her. But as the film progresses she rises to the occasion and finds an inner strength that I don’t think she knew she had. In many ways she becomes the moral compass of the movie as it reaches it’s end.

3. The movie is full of great effects How is it acting/working with something that has to be inserted later in post-production?

I find it really exciting when I have to do something that presents an unusual challenge for me as an actor. Some of the best work comes in those moments when I have to actually imagine what the terrifying thing is instead of outright seeing it. It’s a little tricky because it takes a level of trust between the director and the actors that neither one is going to let the other one down. I can react as big or as small as is needed, but it’s the directors job is to make sure my reactions match with what will finally be put in once the effects are done. I think these moments also allowed me to stretch my imagination, which is obviously not as necessary when you get to see what the terrifying thing is in the moment.

4. It also has a lot of action in it. How demanding is a role like this because things can get pretty physical at times?

I’m an actor who loves action and being put in awkward and crazy positions. I would LOVE to do a movie that requires me to learn to do my own stunts.  DARKNESS had a fair amount of running up and down stairs and hallways, and because of the way we were filming there were few—if any opportunities to mess up without having to start all over again. We definitely got our workout in, and the sweltering heat certainly added to challenge.

If I had to speak to what was most demanding about this role for me, it would be playing producer at the same time. There’d be times when I was in the makeup chair learning lines, while also sending a PA out on an errand, and trying to make sure that each of the departments had enough petty cash to get through the day. This set kept me on my toes! Oh, did I mention that my child, who was still nursing, was also on set from time to time? Yeah! Crazy, busy times for Linara.

5. Tell us about working with Andrew, on a professional level?

Andrew and I work very well together. As producing partners we have a really nice balance.  I like doing the math, crunching numbers and money stuff while he, in addition to the writing, gets to work on putting together all the creative teams and scouting needs. Once we’re on set he directs and I act. He’s a good director in that he knows what he wants and can convey to his actors what he needs pretty succinctly.  He works quickly because as an editor he already knows what the final shot is going to look like, which can be a real plus when you’re on a tight schedule and budget.

I am an actor who takes direction really well. I enjoy bringing another person’s vision to life. I also enjoy playing, and taking risks. Andrew, as a director allows for both. It’s a pretty nice setup, really.

6. You've gotten a lot of positive attention with the film. Has that helped your career too?

I’ve been really lucky to be involved in a number of well-received projects. Every little bit helps and it certainly doesn’t hurt that a lot of the attention has been positive.

7. What's up next for you? Next movie to be released?

My goal is to book my first series regular role on a TV show. I’ve been getting close, so it’s just a matter of more hard work, time, and opportunity. Aside from that, Andrew and I are working on a couple of films, and I have a pilot that’s been swimming around in my head for forever that I would like to write.

8. Do you have time for any hobbies?

I have a number of hobbies, but if anything takes away from getting to indulge in them it’s being a full-time mommy. I love my kid and want to give her the world.

So, when I do have time I love to dance and hike. I enjoy going to the library and bookstores. I’ve been really out of practice when it comes to writing, but that is a hobby I’d like to recultivate. I have so many ideas and it would be a shame to just let them live in my head.

9. Do you do conventions/comic-cons?

I would LOVE, LOVE, LOVE to do conventions and comic-con one day. Who do I talk with to make that happen?!

10. Where can we find you online?

RuneScape launches its very first Elite Dungeon

Tuesday 26th June 2018, Cambridge, UK – RuneScape has today launched its very first Elite Dungeon, the Temple of Aminishi, which invites brave players to go solo or buddy up and defeat mobs, mini-bosses and a triple threat of aquatic antagonists, including a giant chained-up serpent – Seiryu the Azure Serpent, the spirit of water.

Located in The Arc archipelago, The Temple of Aminishi – and future Elite Dungeons – offers a greater level of accessibility than traditional in-game dungeons, including access for solo players for a greater challenge, and a story mode option that reduces enemy damage but decreases the chance of unlocking rewards.

The Temple of Aminishi is open to all RuneScape members, and players don’t need to be high-level. For RuneScape novices, a boat from Port Sarim will take them directly to Aminishi after the completing the ‘Impressing the Locals’ novice quest.

Those who do manage to overcome Seiryu, and the other bosses and mini-bosses, will secure a selection of rewards, including a new cosmetic outfit, weapon, tier 82-92 equipment, as well as raise their Dungeoneering skill and receive the title ‘Acolyte of Seiryu’.

Dave Osborne, Lead Designer, RuneScape, said:
“Elite Dungeons are a great way of delivering raid-like experiences without having to gather together a large group of friends and clanmates. The launch of the Temple of Aminishi offers a brilliant way to experience the continuation of The Arc storyline we began in RuneScape a couple of years ago, with a compelling tale and challenging bosses to overcome. We’re really excited to see what players think as they battle their way to Seiryu’s chamber and learn the secrets of the azure water serpent.”

The Temple of Aminishi will be quickly followed with a second Elite Dungeon, scheduled for the living game later in the summer. RuneScape is also currently holding its annual Summer Special promotion, giving players the chance to bag three months of membership for the price of two, Hellion Armour and three-month membership of Old School RuneScape. Further information on Summer Special can be found at the official RuneScape website.

During the long hot summer of 1948, he is called to a patient at Hundreds Hall, where his mother once worked.  The Hall has been home to the Ayres family for more than two centuries.  But it is now in decline and its inhabitants - mother, son and daughter - are haunted by something more ominous than a dying way of life.  When he takes on his new patient, Faraday has no idea how closely, and how disturbingly, the family's story is about to become entwined with his own.

We break down everything in the trailer that we learned from a demo behind-closed-doors at E3.

Cyberpunk 2077 is an upcoming role-playing video game developed and published by CD Projekt, releasing for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. Adapted from the tabletop game Cyberpunk 2020, it is set fifty-seven years later in dystopian Night City, California, an open world with six distinct regions. In a first-person perspective, players assume the role of the customisable mercenary V, who can apply experience points to stat upgrades to reach prominence in the character classes NetRunner, Techie, and Solo. V has an arsenal of ranged weapons and options for melee combat, all of which can be proliferated and modified. Travelling across Night City, V is subject to either walking or driving various vehicles. Branching dialogues are used for conversations with non-player characters, and multiple endings are available.

Cyberpunk 2077 was developed by CD Projekt Red, an internal studio within CD Projekt, using the REDengine 4 game engine. They launched a new division in Wrocław to assist with development, and more staff members worked on the game than were allocated to The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.

Sharon Horgan and Lorna Martin bring Women on The Verge to W

UKTV has partnered with RTÉ to bring Women on the Verge (6x40), a brand new scripted drama which will air on UKTV's premium entertainment channel, W in the UK and RTÉ in Ireland. The six-part series will be co-produced by Merman and House Productions.

Women on the Verge is based on the best-selling book Woman on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown by Lorna Martin, which in turn was based on her much loved Grazia column 'Conversations With My Therapist'.

Kerry Condon (Three Billboards, Rome, Better Call Saul), Nina Sosanya (Marcella, W1A, Last Tango in Halifax) and Eileen Walsh (Catastrophe, Patrick Melrose) star in the series which will air on W later this year. The project was picked up in 2011 by Sharon Horgan, who has since been working with Lorna to turn the subject matter into a frank, hilarious and often shocking half-hour UKTV Original drama.

Lorna Martin said:
I feel incredibly lucky to be working with such outstandingly talented people to bring these stories to life. The show is a love letter to women who haven't ticked all the boxes and whose lives are a bit messier and more complicated than they ever thought they'd be.

Set in Dublin, Women on the Verge tells the darkly comic tale of three career-driven friends in their 30's, at various stages of their lives, who share the same nagging concern - that whilst their friends and colleagues seem to be increasingly in control of their lives, their own lives seem to be moving in the opposite direction.

Kerry Condon will play Laura, who is in the process of potentially ruining her career in investigative journalism by sleeping with her boss. Her ambitions take a knock however when she appears to be supplanted in his affections by a bright and talented young blogger called Samara. Laura is persuaded by Katie, played by Nina Sosanya, to seek professional help for her many issues in the form of a long-term commitment to intensive psychotherapy with the enigmatic 'Dr F' - who will be played by Sharon Horgan.

Divorced and single, Katie has recently contemplated a course of IVF to 'complete' her family without a man and have a much longed for sibling for her young daughter Ella. Meanwhile, Alison, played by Eileen Walsh, completes the trio as a character who, after a series of disastrous and border-line scary Tinder-based one-night stands, finds herself back together with her ex Martin. Alison is hooked up to an electronic device that measures her fertility cycle and describes sex with Martin as 'not too bad really, now that there's some sort of point to it'.

Pete Thornton, senior commissioning editor at UKTV said:
The chance to bring this project to life for W represents an exciting opportunity for us as a broadcaster, and for W as a channel. We're delighted to be working with the talented and much in demand teams at Merman and House Productions alongside a brilliant cast - led by the extraordinary Kerry Condon - to delve into the chaotic, sometimes tragic but always gripping lives of Laura, Katie and Alison.

The series has been ordered by UKTV's director of commissioning Richard Watsham and Steve North, genre manager for entertainment and comedy. Created by Sharon Horgan and Lorna Martin, Women on the Verge will be directed by Annie Griffin (The Book Club, Fresh Meat) with Gavin O'Grady (Popatron, I Don't Like Mondays) as producer. Clelia Mountford and Sharon Horgan will executive produce for Merman alongside Juliette Howell and Tessa Ross for House Productions, whilst commissioning editors for scripted content Pete Thornton and Joe McVey executive produce for UKTV.

Adam Collings, channel director for W added:
Women on the Verge offers a highly original, no holds barred take on a subject matter that will be instinctively familiar to the W audience. Taking the gloss of Sex and the City, combined with the brutal honesty of Girls, this is a project unlike anything else on British TV.

Merman co-founders Clelia Mountford and Sharon Horgan added:
"We were huge fans of Lorna's book 'woman on the verge of a nervous breakdown' that told her personal story so compellingly and honestly. We are very happy that we're finally getting to bring her story to the screen and destroy whatever privacy she has left."

Juliette Howell, executive producer for House said:
"House are thrilled to be working with such a talented team on this sparklingly funny, truthful and original comedy for UKTV. With razor sharp scripts from Lorna Martin, and a top flight cast, helmed by the brilliant Annie Griffin, this is the one to watch."

Justin Healy, executive producer for comedy at RTÉ added:
"We are delighted to be working with Sharon Horgan, Merman and House Productions on this Dublin based comedy drama. The writing and performing talent across the series is phenomenal, and we are thrilled to be partnering with UKTV to bring this Irish comedy not just to RTÉ, but to a UK audience.

"The fact that UKTV and Sharon were keen produce an Irish scripted comedy is testament to the fact that Irish people are incredibly funny and that we have some of the best creative comic voices around, something we will continue to develop and support at home and internationally."

Women on the Verge is the latest addition to W's growing slate of UKTV Originals which includes recently announced scripted series Flack starring Anna Paquin, Sophie Okonedo and Lydia Wilson. W also welcomes Emma Willis to the channel this summer in Emma Willis: Delivering Babies and extend its 'Inside the...' franchise with Inside the Vets.

UK’s Ghostbusters documentary filmmakers take control and announce a ‘sequel’ documentary dedicated to Ghostbusters II.

Anthony Bueno and Claire Bueno, producers of much anticipated CLEANIN' UP THE TOWN: Remembering Ghostbusters, are excited to announce that they are close to completing a companion dedicated to Ghostbusters II under the title TOO HOT TO HANDLE: Remembering Ghostbusters II.

The original intention of the filmmakers was to dedicate a documentary to both Ghostbusters and Ghostbusters II collectively. However, as they delved deeper into the post-production process and assembled the interviews along with a wealth of archive material, it became evident that each film warranted a documentary in its own right.

The decision has been made that CLEANIN' UP THE TOWN: Remembering Ghostbusters will be solely on Ghostbusters, and TOO HOT TO HANDLE: Remembering Ghostbusters II will be solely on the 1989 sequel.  Both will be feature length documentaries.

"This is a very exciting time for us", says director Anthony Bueno, "After puzzling over how we were going to approach splitting the two films in the edit of CLEANIN' UP THE TOWN, especially when we knew how long the part on Ghostbusters needed to be, splitting them became an easy choice. Then we just thought we'd call it CLEANIN' UP THE TOWN: PART 2, but that didn't seem right, or accurately say what the documentary would be about. So after going through ideas and only knowing we didn't want "Slime" in the title, as soon as we said TOO HOT TO HANDLE: Remembering Ghostbusters II, it felt right!"

Work has already commenced on Too Hot To Handle: Remembering Ghostbusters II and is in the early stages of the edit. The many interviews with cast and crew include Dan Ackroyd, Sigourney Weaver, Ivan Reitman, Ernie Hudson, as well as Industry Light and Magic's  Dennis Muren and Ned Gorman.

Following a hugely successful Kickstarter campaign to help fund the completion of the project, CLEANIN' UP THE TOWN: Remembering Ghostbusters is near to reaching picture lock. The edit and motion graphics are complete, leaving only the sound design, score and audio to be mastered.

The producers also want to take this opportunity to confirm that everyone who donated to the Kickstarter and the PayPal crowdfunder will have their names credited on both films.

Producer Claire Bueno stated: "We are very much aware that there is just as much love for the sequel as for the original film, and we are in no doubt that a vast amount of people contributed because they wish to see respect paid to Ghostbusters II. Having informed people we would be covering both films, it is crucial we honour this by ensuring people are credited accordingly on both docs."

The producers are currently in talks regarding the distribution of CLEANIN' UP THE TOWN: Remembering Ghostbusters and hope to make an announcement very soon in preparations for the 35th anniversary celebrations of the original Ghostbusters and Ghostbusters II's 30th anniversary in 2019.

Interview with writer-director Royce Gorsuch

The idea for the new sci-fi movie Mad Genius (out July 3) came from writer-director Royce Gorsuch’s fascination with the human brain.

What inspired this rather unique – and very fun - particular story, Royce?

The idea for Mad Genius was inspired from a series of articles and books I had been reading around 2012, concerning the real-life efforts of scientists to digitally map the human brain…
I’ve always had a fixation with the power of technology and it’s implications on the human condition. The main trait separating humankind from the animal kingdom is our ability to create tools. And in a very short time span, since the dawn of the computer, our tools have become exponentially powerful, and soon, self-enhancing, and self-evolving.

As I read the articles, I immediately started thinking, “What if you could rewrite the human brain like computer code, and fix all of the human problems happening around the world…” Then, being a storyteller, I thought… “What if that power was in the hands of a mad man?”

My goal with the film was to make an entertaining commentary on “playing god,” and the moral dilemmas of being a creator of any kind.

Did you sit down and watch similar movies before shooting? If so, which ones?

Certainly. I had a cadre of films in the back of my mind during the entire process of creating Mad Genius. Most notably of course, Fight Club, The Matrix, and psychological thrillers of all kinds, but the one that might surprise you most is reverence to the fantastic banter and buddy story of Swingers.
I’d say the biggest influence on Mad Genius was the ground-breaking cyberpunk novel by William Gibson, Neuromancer.

(NOTE: Ironically, Mr. Robot came out during our pre-production, solidifying my thesis that this type of story was missing from the marketplace. And I’m a fan.)

In terms of directing choices, anyone you emulated here?

Emulation is a funny subject, because, as I think about it, I’d say, “Yes, I want to be like this filmmaker or that one,” but at the end of the day, the film is an amalgamation of  all films I’ve seen through the Mad Genius team’s lens.

Do you write with certain actors in mind?

Instead of casting a particular person in my mind’s eye during the scripting of Mad Genius, I rather saw original “personas.” I always imagined Mad Genius as a sort of cult graphic novel, coming to life from the bottom of the shelf. The characters were more caricatures or archetypes than based on anything real I’ve seen. Each character represents a different aspect of the human psyche in a grungy cyberpunk uniform.

Anyone you wanted to get for the movie that didn’t

No. The cast I had the chance to work with was incredible.

Where did you discover Chris Mason?

Chris Mason came from our fantastic casting director Tineka Becker, who sat me down before a live audition series, and showed me a self-tape from this British guy who had these “burning eyes.” He immediately struck me. He had that “movie star presence”  and that internal intensity that you can’t quite define, but you know it when you see it. He’s actually a quite a bit more handsome than I initially envisioned for the character, but it was his internal presence that locked the choice for me. I could see it through the self-tape. Chris had already accomplished quite a bit in his career, but I knew he would be a star.  Not only that, but Chris is also a disciplined actor, who is literally word perfect on the script when he shows up to set. Now, he’s a lead in two different major television series. I think it’s just the beginning for him.

Do you consider the film a success only when it hits a certain monetary figure?

Hah! Great question. I do in a way, because that means a certain amount of people were inspired to buy or rent the film, which in turn means, we got a nice amount of people to see it. Ultimately, that is any artist’s desire. To have their work seen and experienced. And it is the industry’s need to be profitable, so if I can achieve that, it grants me another selling point on my next project.

Has the movie opened doors for you?

Mad Genius has opened many new doors for me, as well as rekindled or “proved my pudding” to old contacts. Thanks to my fantastic manager Matthew Shichtman at The Gotham Group, I have a half-inch thick stack of business cards from major Hollywood producers who wanted to meet after he showed them the director’s cut. Now it’s up to me to deliver a new script that they can’t say no to.
