Review: Bliss - Staring Owen Wilson and Salma Hayek

Review by Jon Donnis

Rarely do you watch a film, and as soon as it has finished you feel a strong need to re-watch the first 20 minutes. Bliss is one of those films. The reason why I point this out, is to really encourage you when you watch this film, to pay attention. Often with films that seemingly open quite slowly, you will find yourself messing on your phone, or perhaps making a cup of tea while telling your partner to "give you a shout" when it "starts proper". This film "starts proper" from virtually the opening scene, it also gives away the ending too if you really pay attention, blink and you'll miss it.

Let's first take a look at the synopsis.

"Bliss is a mind-bending love story following Greg (Owen Wilson) who, after recently being divorced and then fired, meets the mysterious Isabel (Salma Hayek), a woman living on the streets and convinced that the polluted, broken world around them is nothing but a computer simulation. Doubtful at first, Greg eventually discovers there may be some truth to Isabel’s wild conspiracy."

My first complaint is not with the film itself, but with the promotion. For example this film is firmly marketed as a "sci-fi" film. Read the synopsis, watch the trailer, and your first thought is of some Matrix like reality film. And I do not think that that fairly describes the film. And since I mention the trailer, another huge complaint is that the trailer really spoils a lot of the film. It also in my opinion creates this "sci-fi" like edge to the film, that in reality is not what the film is about.

So now I have moaned about the promotion, the marketing etc, let me say how much I LOVED this film. Excellent performances from both Salma Hayek and Owen Wilson. The film is very well made, there is clever visual effects throughout the film, a lot of things to look out for in the background too if you choose to watch it a second time (you will). There is a distinct difference in filming between the "ugly" reality, and the "real" reality. Unfortunately the trailer totally spoils the "real" reality by showing it in the first second. Yet in the film about 50 minutes pass before you see it.

Despite the promotion, as I already said, at it's heart this is not a sci-fi film, and you will only really realise that towards the end, I wont spoil it, but I do think there is a chance that people will be disappointed if they expect some Matrix-like sci-fi film, that the trailer suggests, when in reality it is something much deeper.

The Good

The performances from Salma and Owen are both fantastic, and the filming and writing of the film is really good.

The Bad

The idiots who promoted this film, made the trailer, and in general have mislead the audience.

Overall

If you read this review before you watch the film, then do NOT watch the trailer below, watch the film with no pre-conception of what it is about, watch it and enjoy what will become a cult classic.

If you have seen it and are here to find out someone else's opinion, then watch the trailer, and see if you agree with what I have said.

I loved this film 9/10

Jamie Dornan cast in BBC One's mystery thriller The Tourist

Bafta-nominated and Emmy and Golden Globe-winning production company Two Brothers Pictures (Baptiste, The Missing, Fleabag), headed up by acclaimed writers Harry and Jack Williams, announce the casting of Jamie Dornan as the lead in new BBC One, Stan, HBO Max and ZDF drama series, The Tourist, a character-driven, mystery-packed, six-part thriller charting one man's search for his identity.

Bafta-nominated Jamie Dornan (A Private War, The Fall, Wild Mountain Thyme) stars as a British man who finds himself in the glowing red heart of the Australian outback, being pursued by a vast tank truck trying to drive him off the road. An epic cat-and-mouse chase unfolds and the man later wakes in hospital, hurt, but somehow alive. Except he has no idea who he is. With merciless figures from his past pursuing him, The Man's search for answers propels him through the vast and unforgiving outback.

Danielle Macdonald (Unbelievable, Dumplin', Patti Cakes) will star as Helen Chambers, a fledgling Probationary Constable, and Shalom Brune-Franklin (Line Of Duty, Roadkill) is set to play Luci, a waitress who's swept into The Man's journey for answers. Hugo Weaving (The Lord Of The Rings, Patrick Melrose) plays Agent Lachlan Rogers, one of the most highly regarded detective inspectors in Australia, leading Major Crime for the state police.

Full of shocking, surprising, funny and brutal turns, The Tourist is set in a world populated by quirky, enigmatic characters and off-beat black comedy punctuates high-stakes action. At its heart however, is a story of self-discovery with a ticking timebomb underneath: as The Man starts to uncover the mystery of who he was, he's also forced to ask who he is now - and fast. Will he unlock the secrets of his identify before those who are trying to kill him catch up with him?

Jamie Dornan says: "The Tourist are some of the most exciting scripts I've ever read. I can't wait to go to Australia with such a talented group of people."

Harry and Jack Williams, Writers and Managing Directors of Two Brothers Pictures, say: "We're hugely excited about this show. It's tonally breaking new ground for us, and having Jamie Dornan on board is the icing on the Australian cake. We're thrilled to be working with Chris Sweeney again as well as the BBC, HBO Max and Stan."

Danielle Macdonald says: "Helen is a fascinating and intriguing character, I fell in love with her on page one. I ended up reading all the episodes in one sitting because I couldn't put them down! I'm so excited to get to be a part of this incredible project and I can't wait to start filming alongside the amazing cast and production team."

Shalom Brune-Franklin says: "This story is unique and I'm excited to be a part of bringing it to life with this brilliant team. I'm looking forward to adding to the thrilling mystery of these scripts with the wonderfully intriguing character of Luci. It's very exciting to be working on such a great project in Australia - it's going to be a lot of fun."

Hugo Weaving says: "I'm very excited to be slipping into the skin of one of the fabulously idiosyncratic characters who people the desert landscape of The Tourist. The scripts are wonderful. Dark and shocking, surprising and hilarious and always very human. This is a tonally uniquely project and should be an unforgettable ride and shoot for us all."

Heading into production in 2021, The Tourist is produced by Two Brothers Pictures and written by Jack and Harry Williams in association with Highview Productions, All3Media International and the South Australian Film Corporation. Commissioned last year by BBC One in association with Stan, the Australian co-commissioning partner, HBO MAX is also confirmed as the US broadcaster and ZDF as the German broadcaster.

Further casting will be announced in due course.

New series of Dragons’ Den returns to BBC this spring

Entrepreneurial TV hit Dragons' Den will return this spring for its 18th season - and after four years and multiple investments in the Den, Dragon Tej Lalvani has confirmed that this series will mark his last before he steps down to devote more time to his increasing business interests.

Supplement supremo Lalvani is joined by fellow investors Deborah Meaden, Peter Jones, Sara Davies and Touker Suleyman for the 14-episode new series - filmed during 2020 following the introduction of new guidelines that allowed the UK's TV production industry to restart.

Sarah Clay, the BBC's Commissioning Editor for Entertainment says: "Despite the additional production challenges Covid-19 posed, this new series is one of the most tense and competitive yet. We'll be very sorry to see Tej go as he's one of the shrewdest and coolest Dragons ever to grace the Den and I want to thank him for his enormous contributions, both personally and professionally to the series. As audiences will see, he certainly leaves the show on a high and we wish him continued success."

Tej Lalvani commented: "I'm truly excited for the upcoming series of Dragons' Den, which looks set to be one of the best. However after an incredibly enjoyable four years as a Dragon I have decided that this next series will be my last. My commitment to the international growth and expansion of my core business and the numerous investments over the years sadly means I will be unable to dedicate the necessary time moving forward. I would like to thank the BBC for the great opportunity along with their support and understanding. I wish everyone on the team the very best as it's been a true pleasure working together."

BBC announces two new documentaries - Black Power and Subnormal

The BBC today announced two new documentaries - Black Power (1x90), for BBC Two and BBC iPlayer, a searing account of the Black Power movement; and Subnormal (1x60), commissioned for BBC One and iPlayer, which examines how black children in the 1960s and 1970s were disproportionately sent to schools for the so-called 'educationally subnormal'. Both documentaries feature first-hand interviews with key participants in the events, many of whom are telling their stories for the first time.

Black Power is directed by Bafta-nominated George Amponsah (Hard Stop) and Subnormal by new talent Lyttanya Shannon. The idea for both documentaries originated from Steve McQueen while he was working on the Small Axe anthology. He is Executive Producer on both films, alongside James Rogan, Tracey Scoffield and Soleta Rogan.

Black Power examines how the Black Power movement came into being in the late 1960s and fought back against police brutality and racism. It features rare archive of Martin Luther King, Malcolm X and Stokely Carmichael's activities in Britain, as well as footage of leading figures in the movement in the UK, Altheia Jones-LeCointe, Darcus Howe (pictured above) and Roy Sawh. It casts fresh light on the story of the young black people in the 60s and 70s who challenged the British establishment and helped to shape a new political and cultural landscape in the UK.

Examining one of the biggest scandals in the history of British education, Subnormal tells the story of how black parents, teachers and activists banded together to expose the injustice and force the education system to change. It explores the controversial debates on race and intelligence that led to the scandal and the devastating impact it had on the children affected.

Steve McQueen, Executive Producer, says: "Looking at the past is an indication of what we have achieved today. These two documentaries show us of how far we still have to travel for liberty and justice."

Charlotte Moore, BBC Chief Content Officer, says: "These are important stories from our recent history that still resonate today. Steve McQueen has assembled a talented team of creatives to make these two documentaries that shine a light on the experiences of young black people from the 1960s and 1970s, sharing rare archive and enabling us to hear directly from key individuals, many speaking for the first time."

Channel 4 announces an unprecedented undercover series revealing how covert police teams work to catch paedophiles

Undercover Police: Hunting Paedophiles is an extraordinary documentary series that has gained exclusive access to some of the most secretive covert units working in modern day policing.   The 1 x 90 mins and 2 x 60 min series has been made by BBC Studios Production's The Documentary Unit and has been three years in the making.

Following a raft of high-profile vigilante 'paedophile hunter' stings the police rolled out a new strategy in 2017 across England and Wales to catch paedophiles online using undercover police officers. The police teams featured have led the way in developing this tactic, which has seen hundreds of child sex offenders not previously known to police, identified and arrested.

The explosion in online child sexual abuse has only worsened during the pandemic with reports of obscene material more than doubling globally to more than four million in the first month of lockdown in 2020. In April of the same year, there were nearly nine million attempts in the UK to access child sexual abuse websites which had been previously blocked by the Internet Watch Foundation.

In the UK, 300,000 people are considered a threat to children either through physical 'contact' abuse or online. [iv] Investigators have found that online abuse images are so easily accessible they can be found on the open web in just three clicks.  It is estimated that half a million men in the UK have viewed and used child abuse material.

Channel 4 Documentaries Senior Commissioning Editor, Alisa Pomeroy said: "This powerful series is both timely and vitally important. As a direct result of Covid, millions of children are now stuck at home, bored, hidden away in their bedrooms and chatting online. Each potentially laying themselves open to the sinister practice of online grooming by an increasing number of would-be sexual abusers."

Malmkrog - Exclusive New Trailer and Poster

New poster and trailer released for Cristi Puiu’s historical drama Malmkrog, which heads to the UK on Virtual Cinemas and VOD 26th March from Sovereign.

Guests arrive at the mansion of aristocratic landowner and man of the world Nikolai over the Christmas holidays. Among them are a politician, a young countess and a general with his wife. They converse and dine – what a wonderful, much-missed way of life – indulge in parlour games and discuss politics, progress, morality, death, and the Antichrist. As the debate becomes more heated, cultural differences become increasingly apparent and the mood grows tense. In the end, everyone will become a victim of his or her own discourse.

Puiu was named Best Director for the new Encounters Awards at the 70th Berlin Film Festival last year, and Malmkrog won Best Film and Best Screenplay at the 2020 Seville European Film Festival. Based on the work of Russian philosopher Vladimir Solovyov, Malmkrog is provocative, engrossing, and extremely timely filmmaking. Puiu, who won the Un Certain Regard Best Film award at Cannes in 2005, for The Death of Mr Lazarescu, cements his reputation here as one of Europe’s most accomplished and uncompromising directors.

Elegantly staged and beautifully acted, with first rate performances from an ensemble cast including Frédéric Schulz-Richard (Waiting For The Barbarians), Ugo Broussot (Territory of Love), Diana Sakalauskaité (Three Exercises of Interpretation), and Marina Palii (The Silver Forest), the film recalls the drawing room masterworks of Max Ophüls, and the stark cerebral work of Ingmar Bergman. As the guests ruminate at length, within the confines of an ornate 19th century manor house, the viewer is swept along with confounding opinions, prescient dilemmas, dazzling wordplay and unexpected clashes, all handled with absolute cinematic mastery by Puiu.

A challenging, rewarding and unique mixture of Downton Abbey and Dostoyefsky, your mind will be all the richer for watching it.

Best on-screen disastrous duos!

From Homer Simpson to Joey Tribbianis, there's something undeniably great about watching a loveable idiot blunder their way through life. Now, times that childish chaos by two and what do you get? A disastrous duo! We all love a bit of double trouble and one iconic pair have been creating some new time-travelling turmoil recently. So, to celebrate the upcoming physical release of Bill & Ted Face The Music, we've created a list of our favourite on-screen disastrous duos.

Bill & Ted Face The Music is available on Digital NOW, Available on 4K, Blu-ray™, DVD & VOD on January 25th, https://amzn.to/3o8eQDL

1.) Bill & Ted (and their equally disastrous daughters…) – Bill & Ted Face The Music

Best dudes Bill (Alex Winter) & Ted (Keanu Reeves) are disastrously dumb, yet completely lovable layabouts. Renowned for their time traveling adventures, this latest venture requires them to to write a song that will save the world from collapse. Transporting themselves through time to take the song from their future selves seems like the simplest option, but they soon discover they aren't living the successful lives that they would have hoped.

Despite their continued childish ways, the boys have done some growing up since their earlier films, meaning there's a new duo on the scene, their now grown-up daughters Billie & Thea. Despite their best efforts to help their Dad's save the world, they wind up in Hell, which we'd say is a fairly disastrous as far as disasters go…

    2.) Brennan Huff & Dale Doback – Step Brothers - https://amzn.to/3973OtX

Another duo well versed in the lazy lifestyle are Brennan (Will Ferrell) and Dale (John c. Reilly). 40, Unemployed, still living at home and firmly labelled – losers, their worlds collide when Dales mum and Brennan's Dad get married. The love birds move in together, big kids in tow, forcing the pair to become roommates. Like any siblings unwillingly existing in the same space, they despise one another, and each sets out to sabotage the day-to-day life of their new brother.

From dodgy job interviews to doggy do-dos, there's disaster around every bunk bed post. However, amongst the madness they discover a shared love of music, transforming their turbulent relationship into a blossoming bromance.

    3.) Greg Jenko & Morton Schmidt - 21 Jump Street - https://amzn.to/2YihU5T

Friends and colleges Greg Jenko (Channing Tatum) and (Jonah Hill) are careless cops who are tasked with an undercover mission to bring down a synthetic drug ring at their old High School (what could possibly go wrong?) Just about everything it seems… faced with a series of shootouts and car chases that make a mockery of any serious action film, Jenko & Schmidt attempt to rewrite their High School experiences and iron out the screw ups of their past.

With a strong dose of bromance that makes the drug they're after look weak in comparison, the dynamic duo blunder through the operation, messing up their mission in a continuous spiral of catastrophe.

4.) John Beckwith and Jeremy Grey - Wedding Crashers - https://amzn.to/2KHiIxS

John (Vince Vaughn) and Jeremy (Owen Wilson) are committed to two things - womanizing and each other. The pair lie and bribe their way into wedding receptions, in a bid to win over the female guests. A sport that spells trouble if we ever heard of one… the pair break hearts faster than you can say 'I do'. With a high-profile wedding on their radar, the friends embark upon their most mischievous mission yet.

When John meets the love of this life, things get a little rocky for the pair, and their wing-manning days seem to be over. But there's still plenty of hilarious hiccups to enjoy before either of these loveable idiots ties the knot.

    5.) Shaun & Ed - Shaun of the Dead - https://amzn.to/3988tvS

Let's go out with a bang, or a zombie apocalypse, because what could possibly be more disastrous than that? Shaun is a video game loving, pint drinking layabout, determined to win back his fed-up girlfriend Liz. Room mate Ed is equally as unambitious and together they make a pretty clueless pair, certainly not equipped to fight off an onslaught of zombies…

More frustrated by the realisation that they will have to leave their beloved Winchester pub, than concerned by the threat of being eaten alive, they are forced to protect their friends and family as the end of the world looms. Their already sloth-like states aren't too dissimilar to those of the brain-dead zombies, making this duo completely disastrous in the face of danger, and utterly hilarious to watch.

Bill & Ted Face The Music is available on Digital NOW, Available on 4K, Blu-ray™, DVD & VOD on January 25th

Interview with Derek Ting - Director and Writer of Agent Revelation

Written, directed by and starring Derek Ting,  AGENT REVELATION fixes on Jim Yung, a rejected CIA analyst, has been exposed to an ancient 'dust' that transforms him into a super soldier that can communicate with aliens. When a secret organization works with him to discover why aliens have returned to Earth, the truth comes at a price. The film is now available on digital from Quiver Distribution.

Where does your love of filmmaking stem from?

Movies have always come from a simple sense of enjoyment and bonding with friends and family.  Growing up, my Dad rented movies at the local video store on Sundays, when he had off from work.  It got to the point where I had seen most movies in the entire store.

You obviously gravitate towards science-fiction  - --  I imagine it was either Star Wars or Star Trek that spurred the interest?

As a kid I was a Star Wars fan(of the originals).  It’s one of the best hero’s journey trilogies.  In college, I became a Star Trek The Next Generation fan.  Each episode tackles many of our real world’s problems in an engaging way.  I believe the world creation in Sci-Fi is the fun part.   You get to make up the rules.  The hard part is making it all make sense and work together seamlessly to tell a story.  I think that’s why a lot of the reboots have either been great, or flops.  You can’t just throw money at it.  It’s a skill that takes mastery.

And would you say Agent Revelation is not only your grandest film but your most accomplished?

In terms of world creation, yes.  What should the Aliens and spaceship look like?  How should the physics of the energy behave: the wall, the weapons, the reservoir?  How about the Ash?  What about Jim’s powers?  What’s the science behind that?  What is this base?  What does it look like?  How do they live?   I tried to base it on real life instead of using preconstructed “sci-fi” looking sets that often mimic: Star Wars or Aliens.  For example, we shot at an actual genetics lab, because they are analyzing Jim’s blood, and I had a geneticist culture bacteria for us in an incubation gel.

Who did you base the title character on?

I believe great characters and stories are grounded with some sort of reality we live in.

I met up with a friend of mine from New York who was visiting Hong Kong where I have been based for the last 15 years, and he told me about meeting and finding his biological Mother for the first time as well evaluating how his life would have been had he not been adopted at the age of 8 years old.  He grew up rebellious in the United States, eventually being disowned by his adopted parents: not a phone call after turning 18.  Having grown up with loving protective parents all my life: a support system to pursue my dreams; the thought of having been abandoned twice by parents is a fascinating perspective.

Was it a conscious decision to have a richly diverse cast?

Yes, absolutely.  It’s always a risk, but I believe as Steve Jobs would say, “Stay Foolish” that in the end, diversity yields better stories, and therefore is better business despite what we’ve seen traditionally.

Take the character Alastair for instance, my instinct is that we had seen this character before in movies, the tech CEO, to the point the actors are cast to look like an Elon Musk, or Steve Jobs, turtle neck and all.  But what if Alastair was like a Ken Chenault (The CEO of American Express)?  This to me is much more intriguing and unpredictable, and therefore, there’s a greater sense of suspense and mystery.

You spend time between Los Angeles and Hong Kong – did the film shoot in both parts of the world?

We shot most of Agent Revelation entirely in Los Angeles vicinity.  So I had to fly back and forth to scout it, film it, and do post production.  However, interestingly enough, I’m writing Agent 3, and with the treatment(summary) done, I can tell you we will be filming in both Los Angeles and Hong Kong .

Further cast announcement for ITV’s McDonald & Dodds

Saira Choudhry, Rosie Day, Nitin Ganatra, Nicholas Goh, Siobhan Hewlett, Sarah Parish and Rhashan Stone join the cast for the third and final film of series two of ITV's McDonald & Dodds

Saira Choudhry, Rosie Day, Nitin Ganatra, Nicholas Goh, Siobhan Hewlett, Sarah Parish and Rhashan Stone joined the cast for the third film of series two of ITV's McDonald & Dodds, alongside leading actors Jason Watkins and Tala Gouveia.

Filming has now finished on the contemporary detective drama series, produced by leading independent production company, Mammoth Screen, an ITV Studios company, and is due to air next month on ITV.

The new series sees Tala Gouveia (Cold Feet) and BAFTA award winning actor Jason Watkins (The Lost Honour Of Christopher Jefferies, Des) reprise their roles as the smart and ambitious DCI McDonald and the humble, and quietly brilliant, DS Dodds in three new murder mysteries. They are joined in the third film by guest cast members Saira Choudhry (No Offence), Rosie Day (Outlander), Nitin Ganatra (EastEnders), Nicholas Goh (Skyfall), Siobhan Hewlett (Sherlock), Sarah Parish (Bancroft) and Rhashan Stone (Finding Alice).

Returning cast includes James Murray as Chief Superintendent Houseman, Jack Riddiford as DC Darren Craig with Lily Sacofsky joining as DC Milena Pachiorkowski.

Set in picturesque Bath, the series pairs feisty DCI McDonald, who has recently transferred from London's Met Police, with the unassuming DS Dodds, who has been happy in the background for most of his working life. To McDonald's surprise they form an unexpectedly effective crime solving partnership.

The third film tells the story of a social media influencer Rose Boleyn (Rosie Day) who elects to have plastic surgery at a clinic run by soon to be divorced couple Al (Rhashan Stone) and Mariel (Sarah Parish). After tragedy strikes, McDonald & Dodds are brought in to investigate the clinic and its staff. Nitin Ganatra plays anesthetist Dr Dan McCartney, Saira Choudhry is clinic receptionist Alliyah, Nicholas Goh and Siobhan Hewlett play theatre nurses Jian Yang and Penny Haggard.
