TRAILER: Song Without A Name - Theatrical Release Date Announced

Song Without a Name (Canción Sin Nombre) is set in Peru in 1988. The country is in the grip of a devastating political crisis. Georgina, a young woman from the Andes, has her newborn daughter stolen, after giving birth at a fake health clinic. The desperate search for her baby leads her to Pedro, a young and tenacious investigative journalist who will stop at nothing to get to the truth.

Based on a true story, Song Without a Name, nominated for the prestigious Golden Camera at last year's Cannes Film Festival, is a bruisingly evocative and almost unbearably moving first feature film from León. Evocatively filmed in stark black and white, it features a poignant performance from newcomer Pamela Mendoza as the beleaguered mother, with Tommy Párraga beautifully measured as the journalist hitting endless Kafkaesque dead ends, as he burrows into the corruption and strife of a country in turmoil.

As well as being a searing examination of the inequities of class, and the dehumanizing effects of politics, Song Without a Name is also a nerve-wracking race against time, with Georgina and Pedro on a seemingly futile search for the stolen child. Audiences who relished the Costa Gravas classic Missing, or the Oscar-winning Spotlight, about the power of journalism to uncover unpalatable truths, and Alfonso Cuarón's Roma, will find themselves haunted and enthralled by this assured, resonant masterwork.

SONG WITHOUT A NAME WILL BE RELEASED 30th OCTOBER

Interview with Kodi Zene director of “Monochrome : The Chromism”

Kodi Zene is the director of "Monochrome : The Chromism" (available On Demand October 16), a unique and enthralling new sci-fi film set within a black and white world where society starts to see color for the first time.

Monochrome. What is it?
MONOCHROME is a black and white world, in which we explore the thoughts and actions that follow when society sees color for the first time in the form of people ("Hues") who start turning color. "THE CHROMISM" is the first film and origin story in this MONOCHROME world, where we follow the first Hue, Isaac Ward as he and the world try to understand what's happening.

Where did you get such a unique idea?
I've always enjoyed black and white art forms. The idea kind of came to me one day when I was thinking about equality in today's world. What if there was no color? Would that make things better or would the world still fight over shades of grey? Then, what if there suddenly was color, something (in that world) that had never been seen before. How would society react to those people? I had to explore these thoughts and hopefully thread some positive social messaging into the heart of the story. Art forms have a way of reaching people when mere words fail.

It's definitely an original movie - - I can't think of any other recent sci-fi films that have been shot largely in black-and-white. Can you?
The only "sci-fi" film I can think of that plays with black and white is the 2014 film, The Giver. However, the black and white visuals (then later replaced by color everywhere) in the story are more of a stylistic element that represent the "awakening" of the characters, not a central story element.

How was it accomplished, technically-speaking?
The visual effects process was quite extensive, and definitely the most challenging. Even compared against our hardest, longest shoot day outside with 30+ extras, fight scenes and a moving bus scene… the post effects process takes the cake.

In keeping with true indie film fashion, I had to wear multiple hats to pull this film off based on our budget. I didn't (and still don't) consider myself a special effects guy, but I was willing to quickly learn.

To achieve the effect of the "Hues", we shot everything in color, as you would normally. In post I would grade the footage to our high contrast black and white, however the parts of our main character or other characters that had turned "Hue" had to be masked, frame by frame for every shot, in each scene. Basically, outlining each body part as precise as possible as they moved so that they stayed in color and everything outside of the outline stayed black and white. It was extremely tedious and was why post-production took a good year!

Was it shot in your neck of the woods?
We shot everything here in Texas. About 90% of it we shot in or around the Dallas area, while the other 10% was shot in several locations in far west Texas.

How, if at all, has the Corona Virus pandemic affected your premiere/release plans for the movie?
We've been planning the release and talking with distributors a good time before the pandemic started, so fortunately our strategy is pretty much the same. However, we are all curious to see the reaction to the film now that there is a pandemic. What I mean is… there are a lot of parallels in the film that are happening in the real world today more than ever. A virus quarantine, lockdowns, finger pointing, riots, heightened levels of racial tension, the list goes on. With most people stuck at home more, they are looking for new things to watch. We hope THE CHROMISM story provides some needed entertainment and some much-needed positive messaging during these times.

David Walliams, Sheridan Smith and Blake Harrison lead the cast for Sky One’s newest instalment Jack & The Beanstalk: After Ever After

Following last year's hilarious Cinderella: After Ever After, Sky has announced the commission of two further instalments of the entertaining, family-friendly specials for Sky One and NOW TV; Jack & The Beanstalk: After Ever After and Hansel & Gretel: After Ever After.

Sky Original Jack and the Beanstalk: After Ever After will air this coming Christmas on Sky One and streaming service NOW TV and production is due to start next month. The Christmas special stars David Walliams, Sheridan Smith and Blake Harrison and is produced by King Bert Productions. It's created and written by The Dawson Brothers and David Walliams, who takes on the role of the Giant in this reimagining of the classic tale. Alongside Walliams, Sheridan Smith (Cilla, Cleaning Up, The Royle Family) stars as The Woman with No Name, the self-proclaimed greatest giant-killer in the village and Blake Harrison (The Inbetweeners, Trust Me) as Dodgy Dave, a shifty market stall trader who sold Jack the magic beans. Further cast includes Jocelyn Jee Esien who plays Pat, Ashley McGuire as Mayoress and Daniel Rigby as the Baker.

All fairy tales end with 'happily ever after' but what happens after ever after? What happened after Jack defeated the giant? The 60-minute Christmas special begins where the fable ends, with a story of two very unlikely friends. We all thought Jack had put an end to the Giant but guess what? The Giant is concussed but very much alive and stuck on earth with no way back to his house in the sky. Jack must think on his feet and outsmart the angry villagers to get the giant home. Along the way, both characters discover their inner self belief and overcome their fears to help one another.

David Walliams said: "I often wondered what happened to Jack after ever after, so I decided to write a sequel because I can't stop writing books! This is a star-studded festive treat - a comedy sequel to one of the best loved English fairy tales. I am delighted to be playing the Giant, alongside some of the biggest names in British TV."

Sheridan Smith said: "This is a brilliantly funny piece and I'm so excited to be working with David again. My part 'The Woman with No Name', is a really fun part and like every baddie, she gets her comeuppance in the end! After the year we've had it's the perfect story for Christmas that the whole family can enjoy together."

Filming commences on stylish crime drama Professor T starring Ben Miller and Frances de la Tour

Filming commences on stylish crime drama Professor T starring Ben Miller and Frances de la Tour, produced by Eagle Eye Drama

"I study scumbags, I don't catch them…"

Smart and stylish crime drama Professor T has commenced filming on location in Belgium and Cambridge.

The six-part ITV drama stars Ben Miller, Frances de la Tour, Emma Naomi and Barney White and is produced by newly formed production company, Eagle Eye Drama, launched by the same team behind global drama brand Walter Presents.

Based on the hit Belgian series of the same name, Professor T is set against the stunning backdrop of one of the world's most prestigious educational institutions, Cambridge University.

The unique crime series is centered around the eccentric, but brilliant Criminology Professor Jasper Tempest, played by Ben Miller (Bridgerton, Sticks and Stones, Johnny English, Death in Paradise), who suffers with OCD and has a tortured past.

Joining the cast are Andy Gathergood (The Salisbury Poisonings), Sarah Woodward (Quiz, The Pale Horse), Ben Onwukwe (Safe, Marcella, Douglas Reith (Downton Abbey) and Juliet Aubrey (Van der Valk, Snatch).

Tony award-winning actress Frances de la Tour (Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, The History Boys) takes the role of Jasper's colourful, but overbearing mother, Adelaide. Emerging star Emma Naomi (Blithe Spirit, The Trial of Christine Keeler) will play Detective Inspector Lisa Donckers with rising star Barney White cast as her police sidekick Dan Winters.

Ben Miller comments:

"Professor T has it all: intriguing murders, dreaming spires, and a cast of unforgettable characters, each with their own fascinating secrets. You don't have to be a professor of criminal psychology to know the ITV audience will love it."

In the opening episode, our protagonist finds himself unwillingly caught up acting as an advisor to the police; his interest in crime is purely academic. Diana Tyson (Elizabeth Kate Back) was violently attacked on the university campus where Professor T has tenure.  DI Lisa Donckers (Emma Naomi) suspects that the assault is very similar to one that occurred years beforehand, and, having been a previous student of Professor T's, she thinks he can help.

Although a valuable contributor to the police force, people that don't know Jasper very well, struggle with his behavior. Professor T's relationship with the world often leads him to daydreams and fantasies about the people around him, and the viewer is privy to these wonderful and quirky sequences.

Emmy-nominated and BAFTA-winning writer/director Edward Berger (Patrick Melrose) executive produces and directs the first three episodes.

Festival news: Arrow Video FrightFest cancels October Cineworld event midst growing COVID restrictions

Arrow Video FrightFest will go virtual for the second time in 2020, having taken the difficult decision to cancel its planned physical event at the Cineworld, Leicester Square. due to continuing COVID restrictions making the event socially, practically and commercially untenable. The digital edition will run over the same days, from Oct 22-25 Oct, and will combine the in-cinema and proposed Halloween digital event into one online festival experience.

Ian Rattray, co-director, said today: “It’s with a heavy heart that we announce the cancellation of the Cineworld event. Although cinemas are not affected by the new hospitality rules, it was the tipping point in terms of what kind of event we were comfortable in presenting to the fans. And with the threat of further London lockdown rules being imposed, it was felt the best plan was to move everything online”

The line-up, which will include over forty films, will be announced on Thurs 1 Oct, with tickets going on sale the same day. As with the August online event, passes as well as individual tickets will be available.

Arrow Video will continue as headline sponsor and other partners confirmed at this stage include broadcast sponsor Horror Channel, global entertainment outlet Den of Geek and online pop culture retailer Zavvi.

New Sky original comedy Bloods begins filming in London Starring Samson Kayo and Jane Horrocks

Lucy Punch, Julian Barratt, Adrian Scarborough, Kevin Garry, Sam Campbell and Aasiya Shah join the cast of Sky’s new paramedic comedy

Filming has begun on new Sky original Bloods. Starring BAFTA nominated Samson Kayo (Famalam, Truthseekers) and Golden Globe nominated Jane Horrocks (Absolutely Fabulous, Little Voice), the series follows a pair of seemingly mismatched paramedics and their fellow ambulance station colleagues through the life-saving world of a south London emergency service. Made for Sky by Bafta award-winning Roughcut TV (Stath Lets Flats, People Just Do Nothing, Cuckoo) Bloods will air on Sky One and NOW TV in 2021.

Joining Kayo and Horrocks for emergency callouts, the ensemble paramedic cast will include; Lucy Punch (Motherland), Julian Barratt (Mighty Boosh) Adrian Scarborough (Gavin and Stacey), Kevin Garry (Absolutely Fine), Sam Campbell (Melbourne International Comedy Festival Barry Award winner) and Aasiya Shah (Raised By Wolves) .

The six-part Sky original is shot on location in South London and follows tough-acting loner Maleek (Kayo) and his over-friendly divorcee paramedic colleague Wendy (Horrocks). Their partnership looks dead on arrival. But pretty soon they’re giving each other life support. An ensemble comedy, set within the fast-paced, never-ending rush of 999 call outs, Bloods charts Maleek and Wendy’s struggle to gain the respect of their fellow paramedics. Each 30-minute episode will bring humorous relief to the world and characters of the paramedic service and recognises the talent of those who put their own lives at risk in an emergency to help keep us safe and healthy.

Samson Kayo said: “I’m super excited to show the world Bloods especially because I almost became a paramedic. Lucky for the NHS, I chose to play the character instead! I’m looking forward to hopefully bringing a bag of laughs to Sky with the lovely team at Roughcut who have some quality comedies under their belt!”

Jane Horrocks said: “I am very much looking forward to working on Bloods and being paired with the extremely funny Samson Kayo. I know nothing of the world of paramedics, but maybe I need to overcome my fear of blood before I start.”

Little Mix The Search - Q&A

Little Mix The Search will see the multi-award winning group (Perrie Edwards, Jesy Nelson, Jade Thirlwall and Leigh-Anne Pinnock) creating bands and becoming mentors to a new wave of talent.

The singers who make it into new bands will live together and gain access to Little Mix’s inner circle who have contributed to their phenomenal success, including creative directors, vocal coaches, music directors, choreographers and producers.

What’s your ambition for the series?

Leigh-Anne: To find the next best big group and be the best mentors that we can be.

Perrie: We wanted the show to be different and unique, and feel fresh and young. We also hoped we would find amazing talent, as if we haven't got amazing talent it doesn’t work. Luckily the talent was so good. The show is everything we wanted it to be.

How is LMTS different to other talent shows?

Jesy: I think it’s more current and fresh. It’s nice to see mentors who can relate to everything, who are living proof that a show like this can make you successful.

Leigh-Anne: The format is completely different to any other talent show. Us girls have been through it, we've been in their shoes and auditioned before. We’ve been successful - we’ve lived it. We can help them and guide them, and hopefully they can follow in our footsteps in terms of success.

Jade: It’s really authentic. We’ve lived the experience ourselves. As mentors we're hands on and want to support them during and after the show. It’s a new way of doing things and we don’t follow the stereotypical rules of a talent TV show. We want to really support the acts, and I think that will really resonate with the audience watching.

How do you hope fans will react when they tune into Little Mix The Search?

Jesy: I hope they love it as much as we love it. I hope they think the talent is good. I feel confident they will!

Jade: I think they’ll be quite overwhelmed at how much talent there is on the show. We’ve had so many incredible singers and artists. It will give people an insight into our friendship as a group. It will be nice for people to see us open up more. People don’t see that side of us all the time.

How was filming the audition stages of the show?

Leigh-Anne: It was really fun. It was actually amazing to know all these incredible singers wanted to be on our show. We were really happy with the talent we found.

Jade: It was really bizarre being on the other side of it and having to judge people. It was very emotional knowing you’ve had to let someone down. At the time when you get a no it can feel the worst thing ever. It was emotionally draining going home knowing you’ve let someone down. But at the same time, it’s amazing when you find insanely talented people so it's rewarding at the same time.

What are you looking for in the contestants of LMTS?

Perrie: We’re looking for someone who has that dynamic they can bring to the group. A friendly personality, but their talent needs to be off the scale. We’re looking for the full package.

Jade: It isn’t just enough to be an amazing singer. You need authenticity, people love to love the person behind the music. Someone that has something very interesting about them. I love the people that come to the show knowing what sort of artists they are. That confidence and awareness is appealing to me.

You’ve filmed the auditions already, are you happy with your line up?

Perrie: Completely! The whole time we were doing the auditions, we kept looking at each other and saying we can’t believe these people have auditioned for our TV show.

Have there been any moments that have really stood out to you so far?

Leigh-Anne: Every now and again you get that one audition that sticks out. My favourite audition was two boys; they are brothers and an r'n'b rap group. It was really emotional. Sometimes people just connect with you, and it was a nice moment.

Perrie: Certain people when they auditioned made me cry. When you have that connection vocally, it really moves you. We all feel something unique, and we all react differently.

Jade: When we chose the final bands line up. Seeing their journey from their first audition to on stage, we were blown away by how well they gelled. I love that feeling you get when something really special happening in front of you, it’s really exciting.

How was it being on the other side, and judging rather than auditioning?

Jade: With great power comes great responsibility. We all felt it at the beginning with our first nos, it was so hard to say it. As we got into it we realised there was only a certain amount of spaces and we had to decide if people were ready. It's exciting to give someone a platform.

Jesy: I really enjoyed it because I felt we could give a lot of advice that they genuinely took on board. They know we’ve been in that position, which I think helps put them at ease.

Do you have any regrets from auditions? Anyone upon reflection you wish you’d put through?

Leigh-Anne: Yes I do have some regrets. It's annoying when you watch it back and think 'why did I say no to them'. There are also people that the other girls didn’t put through which I'm sad about.

Perrie: I went into this saying I just wanted to be true to myself. There were times when people would fight hard for their place and I'd think - go on then! I wish I’d been more stern but it’s hard when you see how much they want it. Certain people won me over, but deep down I knew it wasn't right.

Did you have any disagreements between yourselves during the auditions? Did you fall out at all over decisions on who to put through to the next stage?

Leigh-Anne: There’s quite a few times where my face says it’s all! We all have different tastes in music, so we’re bound to disagree sometimes.

Jesy: We didn’t fall out, but we defo had disagreements. It didn’t surprise me though, as we all have different taste in music.

Jade: We definitely had disagreements. A couple of times maybe I went off in a huff! There are moments we couldn’t believe someone wouldn’t put someone through. It’s inevitable that we’re not always gonna agree on certain people. But we all respect each other's opinion.

Did you feel bad having to let anyone go/give negative (constructive) feedback?

Perrie: I found that really difficult. Difficult being the decider. Because I’ve been there and I know how much that 'yes' means. I rang my mum crying at one point, as I found it so hard saying no to people. I know how hard it hits when it’s something you're passionate about.

Leigh-Anne: Yeah there was one girl, I felt she was too young. It’s not like we’re giving negative feedback, it’s all very constructive. Sometimes people just aren’t ready, and it would be unfair to put them through if we know that.

Jesy: It wasn’t nice to send people home. I struggled with that, because we know exactly how that feels.

Can you give us any intel about the live shows?

Jade: There’ll be a few surprises. It’s six completely different bands, different genres, and they’ll each bring their own thing, and each be in control of what they want to do. Oh and defo expect some Little Mix performances!

Leigh-Anne: They’re gonna be massive! We’re excited because the performances are gonna be HUGE.

Jesy: It’s gonna be really different because each group will bring their own vibe and their own style of performance.

Did you have memories of your time auditioning on a talent show?

Perrie: I didn’t want to do it, but my mum forced me. I’m really thankful now! I was painfully shy and didn’t wanna do anything that would embarrass myself.

Jade: I just remember being terrified. And when you're nervous it affects your vocals. I sympathise with people whose nerves get the better of them. I remember thinking 'if you nail this it could change your life', which is quite a surreal feeling to have.

Quite a few of the contestants were really nervous; do you have tips on how you overcome your own nerves if you’re ever in that position?

Leigh-Anne: Some nerves are good, as it shows you care. It’s all about breathing techniques. It’s so hard to control nerves, but you can overcome it. Once you feel the support it definitely helps.

Perrie: It’s easier said than done, but if you’re gonna let your nerves get in the way, you’re not gonna do well. It’s 30 seconds, so fake it 'til you make it! Put on a character, pretend it’s not you.

Do you think these shows are the best way to break into the music industry?

Jesy: Not necessarily, but I do think it gives people a massive platform. You get to build a fanbase and showcase your talent for people in the industry like management and labels, so it's all exposure.

Leigh-Anne: It’s what you do after that is important. You have to create music that people will buy into and show who you are as an artist.

Jade: For someone like me from a working class background, I couldn’t afford to move to London, or pay for studio time. My resources were limited. So doing a show like this gives big opportunities. The Search puts people through their paces, and that experience is priceless even if you don’t win. There’s so much experience to be had.

What has been your most memorable experience during your career so far?

Perrie: Just being in the group, with all the laughs and success we’ve had. Doing it together has made it incredible.

Jade: When we won our first Brit award. That was such a whirlwind couple of weeks. We were on tour with Ariana in the USA at the same time, and that moment I thought we’d really made it. It was one of those pinch me moments! We were used to being the underdog up until that point. When we were given that Brit, it was like we were seen and recognised as artists.

What top qualities do you think it takes to be in a globally successful band?

Leigh-Anne: Dedication, drive and commitment. You need to basically want it and work hard.

Jade: It’s essential you’re all on the same wavelength about what you wanna be as a group. To be able to see the bigger picture and support each other. You’ve got to work hard for it, support each other and let each other shine.

Who would be in your dream pop super group - if you could take members from any different pop group ever?

Leigh-Anne: Mel B, Normani, Emma Bunton, Beyoncé and all of Little Mix!

Perrie: Beyonce, Justin Timberlake, Mel C, Gary Barlow, Diana Ross

Jesy: Missy Elliot, Normani, Beyoncé and myself!

Jade: Normani, Missy Elliot, myself and TLC’s Left Eye

What’s the best piece of advice about the industry/your career you have ever been given and who gave it to you?

Leigh-Anne: Know your power, believe in yourself and don't let anyone dim your light.

Jesy: 'Don’t read comments'. Nicola Roberts told me that.

Sum the show up in three words

Jade: Fun, fresh, authentic

Leigh-Anne: Electrifying, trailblazing, fun

Perrie: Fresh, fun, exciting

Jesy: Unique, current, fun

Introducing Aggi O'Casey and Tom Varey who lead in gripping new thriller Ridley Road for BBC One

Further cast includes Rory Kinnear, Tamzin Outhwaite, Tracy-Ann Oberman, Eddie Marsan, Samantha Spiro and Rita Tushingham.

The 4x60' thriller Ridley Road, adapted for BBC One and PBS Masterpiece by award-winning writer Sarah Solemani (Barry, Aphrodite Fry), from the critically acclaimed novel by Jo Bloom, has gone into production.

Bringing together an award-winning cast including Rory Kinnear, Tamzin Outhwaite, Tracy-Ann Oberman, Eddie Marsan, Samantha Spiro, Rita Tushingham, Danny Hatchard and Tom Varey, Ridley Road tells the story of a young Jewish woman, Vivien Epstein, played by Aggi O’Casey, in her first television role.

After falling in love with a member of the 62 Group, she rejects her comfortable middle-class life in Manchester and joins the fight against fascism in London, risking everything for her beliefs and for the man she loves.

Inspired by the struggle of the 62 Group, a coalition of Jewish men who stood up against rising neo-Nazism in post-war Britain, Vivien is working with them when she realises that Jack, her missing boyfriend (played by Varey) has been badly injured. Vivien infiltrates the NSM, a neo-Nazi movement which is becoming increasingly prominent in London. As Vivien descends further into the fascist organisation her courage and loyalties are challenged.

Aggi O’Casey says: “Sarah Solemani has blown me away with the detail, sensitivity, and complexity with which she has written Vivien. I can’t wait to bring this vital and little-known story to life.”

Playing Jack Morris, Tom Varey, says: “I’m so proud to be working on such a powerful, beautiful, important story. The scripts are amazing, and I can’t wait to bring them to life. I’m excited to be in the company of actors that I have looked up to and admired for so long.”

Rory Kinnear (Years And Years) plays Colin Jordan, leader of neo Nazi movement NSM. An imposing and forthright activist who, through his fanatical and passionate speeches, incites racism and rioting.

Taking on the role, Rory says: “When I received the scripts from Red Production Company, I was already looking forward to working with them again. Sarah’s scripts had me hooked and to work with so many interesting characters is something that was hugely appealing. I can’t wait to get started.”

Eddie Marsan (Ray Donovan) is cast as hot headed, sharp-witted cab driver Soly Malinovsky - leader of anti-fascist organisation 62 Group. Marsan says: “‘I'm honoured to be playing the role of Soly, the leader of the '62' Group of Jewish anti-fascists who took on the National Socialist Movement in Ridley Road. In recent years anti-Semitism has re-emerged and now, more than ever we need to hear the stories of how normal men and women put their lives on the line to stamp out this cancer.”

Further cast includes:

Tracy-Ann Oberman (Friday Night Dinner) joins as Soly’s wife Nancy, a smooth operator who plays a crucial role in the 62 Group operations.

Samantha Spiro (Sex Education) is Vivien’s mother, Liza Epstein. Her life is about to dramatically change when she learns of her husband’s secret involvement with the underground movement.

Tamzin Outhwaite (EastEnders) plays Barbara Watson, the owner of a hair salon where Vivien gets a job. She has witnessed racism first-hand towards her mixed-race son.

Rita Tushingham (The Pale Horse) plays Nettie Jones, Vivien’s landlady in London. Although self-sufficient, she is lonely after her three sons were killed in WW11 and is afraid of the pace of the changes happening around her.

Danny Hatchard (EastEnders) plays Lee, Colin Jordan’s driver. The NSM is family to him, he is loyal to Colin even though the feeling isn’t mutual.

Writer, Sarah Solemani, says: “A young hairdresser from Manchester makes an unlikely hero in this little known slice of British history. But in these unprecedented times, it is the unlikely heroes whose stories are now worth telling.

"Britain's relationship with fascism is closer and more alive than we like to think. Fortunately, so too is our rich heritage of beating it. Honoured to bring the story of Ridley Road to the BBC and Masterpiece.”

Interview with Caroline Goodall, writer & producer of psychological thriller THE BAY OF SILENCE

Ahead of the release of the UK release of THE BAY OF SILENCE on Sept 28, Caroline Goodall talks Hollywood influences and the mental health issues that drew her to write and produce her first feature film.

Why did you choose to become an actor?

Performing was my freedom. I had a childhood stutter but it disappeared when I pretended to be someone else, so acting freed me from the stutterer’s crippling shyness. I desperately wanted to be an actress, but I had no clue how to go about it as a career as my family weren’t in the business, though they loved the theatre. So, I thought if I took every opportunity maybe I’d find my way. I joined the National Youth Theatre and then in my last year of school, I was spotted in a school play. I spent the summer starring in a BBC period drama series called The Moon Stallion. I had to ride side saddle and spent most of the shoot trying to stop my horse from charging the cameraman. Dorothea Brooking, the director (a rare woman at the BBC at the time) encouraged me to take up my place to study English and Drama Bristol University, maybe hoping I would end up doing something else, but I’d had a taste of the life of a professional actor and my mind was made up. Bristol led to The Royal Court, The National Theatre and then the RSC where I co-starred with Brian Cox (in Misalliance) who years later agreed to star in my film The Bay of Silence.

Do you have a career defining moment?

Yes, being picked by the always amazing Steven Spielberg to play opposite Robin Williams in Hook. It was the first Hollywood 100 million dollar movie. I thought they would all be like that. Watching Spielberg work every day was my film masterclass and with Robin, Steven and Dustin I got to endlessly improvise and play with the script. It was a revelation.

Steven asked me to be Emilie Schindler in Schindler’s List two years later, which was a personal and professional life changing experience. I was so proud when years later, my daughter opened her history book on World War 2 and found a photo of me as Emilie Schindler from the film.

Is it true you’re the only British actress to star in two different Steven Spielberg films?

YES! And I feel truly blessed.

Has writing always been part of your creative life or is it a newly-nurtured talent?

Our house was awash with books. My parents were great storytellers. My father was Liverpool Irish so that came with the territory and my mother’s stories of Sydney life growing up in Australia inspired me. She is still one of the most entertaining people I know. I was always a book worm. Acting and writing are two sides of the storytelling coin but having faith that anyone would want to listen to my written words took time. Screenplays are deceptively difficult to write and demand intense discipline. But then selling them is even harder….

What drew you to THE BAY OF SILENCE?

The book is beautifully written. I remember reading it in the Bay of Silence itself. Lisa St Aubin De Teran, the British born writer, famous for her colourful life chronicled in books like ‘Slow Train to Milan’ and ‘Keepers of the House’ was writing about places and people I could relate to. The book deals with a lot of things, including the idea that you can marry someone and not really know them.

The character of Rosalind (played brilliantly by Olga Kurylenko) has deep-rooted mental health issues. Madness always scrapes at the edge of creativity. My grandmother who graduated from Oxford in the early 20th century was a bit of a Sylvia Plath - she had breakdowns throughout the war and would disappear for days. My father, the eldest of five kids, would get on a train from Liverpool and search London for her. She was usually found sheltering with the Servite nuns. I know it affected him and he rarely talked about it. She died at 52. I never met her. My grandmother’s brother, my great uncle, Roland Berrill, was allowed to be ‘eccentric’ unlike I suspect my grandmother. He co-founded Mensa, the society for people with a high IQ, was a Fabian, Naturist, ran an art school in Venice, dabbled in the occult and designed a pack of tarot cards that are reputedly cursed. I located a deck once for my father’s birthday and he refused them. It’s the only time I saw him superstitious.

Producing is a very stress-inducing role. What made you decide to do it?

Actors have always hacked away at the rock face to tell stories they want to tell, so to produce is a natural extension of what I already do. No one can get an indie movie made these days without being prepared to lead on it.  A good script isn’t enough. I don’t tick boxes – I am a woman of a certain age for a start -  so I knew I had to learn the job boots up. It’s a lonely road. I financed it in classic independent film model – script, business plan, sales agents, attaching talent, finding investors, pre-selling 14 territories to prove market appeal. It’s chicken and egg always.

My experience working with Spielberg and Hook producer Kathy Kennedy, inspired me to enrol in evening classes at UCLA and study Film Finance as well as screenwriting. I learned to budget and schedule the old way, fitting scene strips into a folding board thinking if I learned how to produce I might be ready, if ever the time came - but timing is everything and time went by. Marriage, kids, lots of acting work - the classic work/life balance problem.

Then my kids grew and my acting work stopped revolving around their school holidays. In 2014 I was asked to curate a screenwriter’s retreat in the Villa di Ulignano, a magical place renovated by Franco Cristaldi, who was Fellini and Visconti’s Italian producer who married to Claudia Cardinale, now owned by his son, Massimo. That one week lit a fire in me. Jim Hart (who wrote Hook), Olivia Hetreed, Michael Hoffman, Joanna Murray Smith, Andy Paterson - amazing writer/director/producers from around the world, gifted their time and talent. I resolved then and there that I would fulfil their faith. At different times they all pulled for me on this movie, stepping in with support and advice.

Packaging a film project involves constant meetings, film markets and travelling. Step by step I built the team. By the time we got into production, my daughter Gemma had graduated from Goldsmiths College, London University, in Media and English. She started as producer assistant moved to assistant production co-ordinator and on to post production and delivery. My son was an extra. My husband, Nicola Pecorini, who is Terry Gilliam’s cinematographer, gave advice, read different drafts, talked technical logistics and listened to me moaning. My line producer sister checked my early budgets. The list of people to thank is endless. Of course, there are war stories but I am so proud and grateful that we got there! I set the date. June 4. My brother’s birthday. When that happened, things started falling into place. Paula Van der Oest said yes to directing. Then Claes, Brian and Olga’s schedules firmed up, just as some money fell out - but I had momentum and momentum is everything.

Behind the Scenes of THE BAY OF SILENCE - Caroline (middle, dressed as Marsha, the character she plays in the film) with her son, Leo (crosslegged to her left) and his girlfriend Belen (top left on cushion) along with other extras.

The casting is inspirational, Were the three main leads always your first choices?

Packaging and financing a film is never a straight line. Paula Van Der Oest (our Oscar nominated director) and I knew we needed actors who were both contemporary but with archetypal movie star appeal, to tread that heightened reality of Neo Noir.

I had worked with Brian Cox at the RSC. He was always supportive of the script, and my only choice for Milton. Brian is an actor magnet - everyone wants to work with Brian. Olga is not only smart, talented and a Bond Girl but generous and down to earth. I asked my husband, cinematographer, Nicola Pecorini, who was working with her on Terry Gilliam’s The Man who Killed Don Quixote to slip her the script. Olga responded immediately and said, ‘when do we start’? It still took a year till a green light but she kept the faith and literally wrapped on one movie, got on a plane and flew to us in Italy, to start shooting.

I saw Claes Bang in The Square in Cannes and knew he would be a brilliant Will. I called my casting director, Sharon Howard Field, who discovered he had a UK agent, Simon Sharkey, who ironically, is also a writer and we had worked together! Claes is a theatre animal, like me, and invited me to see him in a play. Peter Garde, my first exec producer (and king of finance plans), is also Danish so I flew to Denmark. Peter picked me up from the airport and directed me on the train to a small regional theatre where Claes Bang star of The Square, Best European Actor 2017 was playing a matinee on a tiny stage - in Danish. Even though he was a huge success at Cannes, he had kept all his theatre commitments. We then had dinner with his wife Lis. Claes fought to make time in his schedule but also introduced me to one of my investors, Dan Friedkin, who also directed him in The Last Vermeer.

When I look back it looks like a straight line of luck and coincidences but at times I felt like I was in a never-ending boxing match with an unknown opponent. I’d go to bed thinking I can’t keep going but I’d wake up the next day with a new idea about how to resolve whatever the problem was and start again.

Finally, what’s next?

The Bay of Silence received its world premiere at Shanghai (SIFF) – a big film festival where normally we’d have pitched up to tread the red carpet - but of course, because of Covid, we couldn’t. We have released theatrically in some physical and Virtual cinemas in the USA and Canada and are on Video on Demand in 100 million homes there! We had strong reviews from the industry critics, especially for the actors, director and cinematographer, Guido van Gennep which makes me so happy, and the film is starting its journey into the world. It’s a strange feeling, not being able to celebrate all the hard work with everyone but it’s also a vulnerable moment. My instinct would likely have been to run and hide anyway. I prefer doing the work – promoting it always hooks into the anxiety of my shy stuttering child self.

On the acting front, I can be seen in Cold Courage, currently on Britbox. I play Maggie, an ex-actress hired to use her thespian skills to fight an international crime syndicate.

Since Covid-19 stalled production, I have been doing pick up shoots on two projects which have returned  -  an Amazon film, Birds of Paradise in Budapest written and directed by Sarah Adina Smith. I play Celine Durand, the troubled US Ambassador to France and mother to Kristen Froseth's aspiring ballerina and a steam punk Sci-Fi indie movie called The Islander, in Croatia, where I play the mysterious ass-kicking Baroness.

And then there’s the second instalment of The Hitman’s Bodyguard, The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard, due in 2021. I’m Crowley, the Head of Interpol, distracted by the antics of Ryan Reynolds, Samuel L. Jackson and Salma Hayek.

Producing wise, I am in post on a documentary with my partner Cheyanne Kane of Vigilants Entertainment. It’s about Hot Rods and Ed Iskendarian or ‘Isky’ - also known as ‘The Camfather’ - who is 99 and still working.

I am trying to find time to finish a historical fiction book I started, which is set in both ancient and modern Italy and like all screenwriters during Covid times, I am writing a one location film (a comedy/drama) as no one’s, least of all my wilder, bigger budget ideas will get much traction till a vaccine is developed.
