BBC One and BBC Music presents Idris Elba meets Paul McCartney

BBC One and BBC Music have announced Idris Elba meets Paul McCartney, a world exclusive show featuring music legend Paul McCartney in conversation with one of the most popular British actors of his generation, Idris Elba, to be broadcast on BBC One and BBC iPlayer in December, and on BBC Radio 2 and BBC Sounds.

This 60-minute entertainment special, to be recorded in London in the coming weeks, will see Idris interview Paul about his peerless career as the most successful musician and composer in pop music history, which began when he wrote his first song at the age of 14. The show will span Paul's incredible history-making journey right up to the present day, as he continues to influence new generations, including Paul's solo material and collaborations.

Paul will talk about his writing process which has produced some of the best loved and most performed songs ever. Idris will seek to find out what inspires Paul to continue to innovate creatively, on the eve of the release of his 26th post-Beatles album McCartney III, the third album in a trilogy of classics featuring Paul playing every instrument and writing and recording every song. Paul launched his solo career in 1970 with the release of McCartney.

Idris says: "When I was asked if I wanted to speak to Paul McCartney, after I realised it wasn't a joke, I immediately said yes… who wouldn't?! I am a massive fan of Paul's! His work has inspired and driven me as a musician, and once I get through the shock of sharing the stage with him, I'm excited to talk about his music and craft. What an honour! Looking forward to sitting with you Paul."

Paul says: "I'm looking forward to sitting down to a chat with the mighty Idris!"

Kate Phillips, Acting Controller, BBC One, says: "Paul McCartney has undoubtedly created some of the UK's best loved songs, songs which are known throughout the world, so I'm thrilled that he'll lift the lid on how he continues to create lyrics and music that will forever stand the test of time. The must see combination of Paul in conversation with one of our best loved actors and super fan, Idris Elba, as well as an incredible live performance from the Cavern, are the perfect Christmas presents for BBC audiences."

The original Cavern Club in Liverpool was where The Beatles played nearly 300 times between 1961-63. Over 50 years later in July 2018, Paul played a secret gig at the legendary venue, performing a 28-song set to 250 lucky gig-goers. Paul and his band performed songs from the 60s to (his then new album) Egypt Station, which was released 54 years after The Beatles had claimed their first hit Number One on the Billboard Album Charts. BBC One will broadcast this very special performance in December, with viewers being able to enjoy blistering performances of songs including I Saw Her Standing There, Lady Madonna, Band On The Run and Come On To Me.

Channel 4 Commissions New Scripted Comedy Big Boys

Channel 4 has commissioned Big Boys, a new six-part comedy series from the award-winning Roughcut Television (Stath Lets Flats).

The funny and heart-breaking new comedy created, written and narrated by Jack Rooke centres on an unlikely friendship between sweet, shy, closeted Jack (Dylan Llewellyn, Derry Girls) and boisterous, laddish and ever-so-slightly mature student Danny (Jon Pointing, Plebs).

Jack has spent the past year at home with his wonderful, potty-mouthed mum. He's been grieving for his father and she for her husband, but the time has now come for him to take his place at the local uni.

There he meets his roommate Danny as the pair are thrown together during Freshers week, watched over by an entirely over-enthusiastic Student Union head. Jack and Danny are at significantly different places on the spectrum of masculinity but closely bond during the inevitable chaos and frenzy of a first year.

Big Boys is based on comedy writer Jack Rooke's award-winning live comedy shows 'Good Grief', 'Happy Hour' and 'Love Letters'.

Jack Rooke, creator and writer said: "As a kid I'd stay up late to sneakily watch something a bit 'queer' on Channel 4. I'd ask Dad: 'Why does that bloke have his face in that other bloke's lap?' and he'd grin and say, 'They're just having a fun time!!' Now I am thrilled to have my first comedy series with Channel 4, writing and narrating Big Boys, based on the teen years after losing my dad with all the ups and downs of grief, sexual discovery, freshers' week and making one very special best mate. (And I'll be sure to include some of my own 'fun times' too!)"

Channel 4 announces Jo Brand’s How to Stay Sane in a Mad World to get us through the winter ahead

2020, it's been quite the year, which is why Channel 4 has commissioned Jo Brand to take an alphabetic romp through the most creative and Covid-friendly ways to help us stay sane over the months ahead via Jo Brand's How to Stay Sane in a Mad World (w/t), 1x60' from Two Rivers Media.

Let's face it banana bread was so last March and we're all slightly puzzled at the number of jigsaws we've managed to complete over the last eight months. The nights have drawn in and we need new ways to lift our spirits and keep us going through the low-key winter that's set to come. So from health to horticulture, QR codes to UV rays, and hibernation to isolation this is the A-Z guide that you never knew you needed.

Along with a host of famous faces and brimming with expert advice to keep you fighting fit and mentally strong Jo will have tips, quips and tonnes of takeout to hopefully make surviving a pandemic that little bit easier.

Louisa Compton, Head of News, Current Affairs and Sport says: "With coronavirus restrictions set to impact our lives for months to come – this guide will be the perfect companion to help us get through the gloomy winter months".

Jo Brand adds: "I did suggest we stop after A is for Alcohol and C is for Cake but I'm assured there are 23 more suggestions to follow so stay tuned."

Channel 4 announces Jack Thorne’s ‘Help’ starring Stephen Graham and Jodie Comer

Channel 4 has commissioned Roadkill producer The Forge in association with One Shoe Films to produce Help (w/t), a new 1x120' drama from the BAFTA award-winning writer Jack Thorne (His Dark Materials, National Treasure) and BAFTA award-winning director Marc Munden (The Third Day, Utopia).

Help, set in a fictional Liverpool care home, tells the moving story of the relationship between a young care home worker (Comer) and a patient (Graham), whose lives are changed forever by the onset of the coronavirus pandemic last spring.

Sarah (Jodie Comer – Killing Eve, Doctor Foster) is smart, but she's never fitted in, not in education and not in work. Her family told her she'd never amount to anything but she unexpectedly finds her calling as a carer at Sunshine Homes. Sarah has a special talent for connecting with the residents, including one in particular, 47-year-old Tony (Stephen Graham – Save Me, This is England). Tony's Young Onset Alzheimer's has left him living out his days in care as his mind slowly deteriorates. His illness causes periods of confusion and violent outbursts, which the other members of staff can't handle, but with Sarah he begins to build a real bond. Sarah's success at managing Tony and the other patients helps build her confidence and restore her self-belief.

Then March 2020 hits and everything Sarah has achieved is thrown into doubt with the arrival of the Coronavirus pandemic. She and her colleagues tirelessly fight tooth and nail, ill-equipped, poorly prepared, and seemingly left helpless by the powers that be. A determined Sarah goes to extraordinary lengths to protect those in her care, whose conditions make their suffering and isolation all the more traumatic. But the staff's unwavering commitment, compassion and heroic efforts can only do so much, and Sarah is pushed into a dark corner and desperately looks for a way out.

Caroline Hollick, Head of Channel 4 Drama says: "This extraordinarily powerful show is right at the heart of what Channel 4 drama is all about – it will shine an unflinching light on the terrible events of 2020 through telling us a compelling, heart-wrenching relationship story. And to have Jack Thorne bringing Jodie Comer and Stephen Graham to our screens, directed by Marc Munden and produced by The Forge, is a level of talent I would be lucky to even dream of."

Jack Thorne says: "About two years ago Stephen Graham came to me with an idea to write something for him and Jodie Comer. I tried to think of something and got nothing. Then this crisis happened, and we saw care homes getting squashed and battered by the government. It's been both a long process and a short one, trying to find a way to tell this story, the amazing thing has been sharing in working out the story with Stephen, Jodie, the amazing Marc Munden, Beth Willis and everyone at the Forge and Channel 4. 30,000 people have died unnecessarily in these care homes because of the indifference and incompetence of our government. Hearing the stories of those at the frontline, having people break down in tears on zoom in front of us has been incredibly moving and galling. Getting the story right will be incredibly important, we are aware of the pressure upon us, this has to be written and made with anger and precision. We hope we do it justice."

Marc Munden says: "It's a privilege to be working with Jack Thorne and The Forge again on so urgent a subject and to have the incredible honour of directing Jodie and Stephen. Help is an angry and immediate film with an unlikely tender relationship at its heart and it responds to the government's abandonment of care homes as a result of the pandemic, a Play for Today for our times."

Stephen Graham says: "Jack is one of the greatest and most truthful writers of our generation and in Help he has crafted a profoundly important piece of social realism. I've wanted to work with Jodie for ages, and together we're hugely passionate about shining a light on one of the biggest tragedies of our time and the people at the heart of it."

Jodie Comer says: "I am, of course, thrilled to finally be working alongside Stephen and the supremely talented Jack, Marc and those at Channel 4. For us to be able to explore such a relevant and emotive story through the eyes of such beautifully real characters, and in our home city of Liverpool, is a real honour. We're determined to do justice to so many of the untold stories and heroes that have been affected as a result of this crisis and to handle them with care."

The three-part special, produced by Vertigo Films, is set to air on Wednesday 20 January 2021 on Sky One and NOW TV, and sees the boys take a much-needed vacation from their London day-job and head to Cape Town, South Africa.

Unfortunately for our two holidaymakers, things don't quite go to plan. While trying to relax after a tough year, Bishop, Pike and his family soon find themselves caught up in the frightening kidnap of a young girl. Having befriended the young girl's parents earlier that day, Bishop and Pike decide it's their duty to use their expertise to help the couple win their daughter back. The sixth instalment of Jed Mercurio's hit crime thriller - which resumed filming at the end of August - wrapped yesterday afternoon in Northern Ireland and will air on BBC One in 2021.

Line of Duty showrunner Jed Mercurio says: "Thanks so much to our brilliant cast and crew who applied rigorous Covid safety measures to deliver Line of Duty six to our wonderful fans. We're all immensely grateful to World Productions and the BBC for the unswerving support they've given us in a time of unprecedented challenges to UK television production."

Simon Heath, executive producer for World Productions says: "Huge praise has to go to Jed, Kelly, Vicky, Martin, Adrian and the brilliant Line of Duty cast and crew who completed filming on series six yesterday, after five months of lockdown and three more of shooting under the most trying of circumstances. The audience is in for a treat next year"

A premiere date for the new series will be announced in due course. Series one to five of Line of Duty are available to stream in the UK exclusively on BBC iPlayer.

New cast confirmed for Guilt as filming begins on the second series of BBC Two and BBC Scotland’s multi award-winning drama

Filming is underway in Scotland on the second series of multi award-winning BBC Two and BBC Scotland drama, Guilt, with new cast including Sara Vickers, Phyllis Logan, Stuart Bowman and Ian Pirie joining returning cast Mark Bonnar, Jamie Sives and Emun Elliott.

The new four-part series is once again written by Neil Forsyth (Eric, Ernie And Me, Bob Servant), co-produced by Expectation and Happy Tramp North and is supported by Screen Scotland's Broadcast Content Fund. The second series is another twisting, surprising story which picks up the action two years after the dramatic finale which saw two disparate brothers, Max (Mark Bonnar) and Jake (Jamie Sives) face the consequences of their guilt after accidentally killing an old man.

In this new second series, characters old and new will battle the consequences of their guilty actions, amidst shocking new developments. The new cast includes Sara Vickers (Watchmen, Endeavour, Shetland), Phyllis Logan (Downtown Abbey, Doctor Who), Stuart Bowman (Bodyguard, Deadwater Fell), Ian Pirie (Chernobyl, Nothing To Declare), Greg McHugh (The A Word, Gary Tank Commander), Rochelle Neil (Episodes, Doctors) and Sandy McDade (EastEnders, Father Brown). The new series of Guilt is expected to air on both BBC Two and BBC Scotland in 2021.

Mark Bonnar, who plays flawed lawyer Max, is delighted to be back filming Guilt again: "I'm completely overjoyed that Guilt is getting a second series! Neil has crafted four amazing scripts with some cracking new characters and an immensely involving plot, full of twists and turns. He's really putting us through the mill! And of course, I'm over the moon to be working with Jamie again.

"We've assembled a fantastic crew - many returning from series one - and I know they're just as excited as us to be a part of this wonderful show."

Married at First Sight U.K. gets a major makeover for 2021

Wedding bells are ringing as Married at First Sight U.K. gets a major makeover for 2021, with the home-grown version of the global phenomenon making its way to E4.

Taking inspiration from the hugely successful Australian version that gripped British viewers this summer, the new UK series will be a bigger, more explosive take on the format, following a fresh batch of singles as they search for love and a happy-ever-after with complete strangers.

Produced by CPL Productions, a Red Arrow Studios company, over 20x60' episodes the series will follow the couples as they meet for the very first time at the altar. Following the Australian format, rather than legal marriages, the couples will make a lifelong commitment to one another at a glamorous ceremony, overseen by a wedding celebrant, that includes guests, bridal gowns, dancing, speeches and cake.

After the ceremony and celebrations are over, true love is well and truly put to the test, as they embark on a luxurious honeymoon, before moving in with each other AND their fellow couples. Relationships will be put under the microscope, by fellow brides and grooms at weekly dinner parties – as well as by the experts, at recurring commitment ceremonies, where couples choose whether they want to stay in or leave the process.

All this and more will build to a dramatic series finale: glossy, high-stakes vow renewals, in which each couple must decide if they will recommit to their partner or go their separate ways.

Shooting starts on Aml Ameen’s directorial debut Boxing Day

Principal photography has begun on BOXING DAY, the UK's first ever Christmas set romantic comedy starring an all-black cast. BOXING DAY is the directorial debut from British actor-writer Aml Ameen (The Maze Runner, Yardie) who has co-written the screenplay, with Bruce Purnell, and stars as Melvin. The shoot takes place on location across London during November and December.

BOXING DAY features an exciting ensemble including American actress Aja Naomi King (How to Get Away with Murder), Little Mix's Leigh-Anne Pinnock in her first film role and Academy Award nominee, Golden Globe and BAFTA winning actress Marianne Jean-Baptiste (Secrets & Lies).

BOXING DAY is inspired by the diary of Ameen's life and is a celebration of love and family through a black-British lens. The film follows Melvin (Aml Ameen), a British author living in America who returns home to London for Christmas to introduce his American fiancée Lisa (Aja Naomi King) to his eccentric British-Caribbean family. Their relationship is put to the test, as she discovers the world her fiancé has left behind.

Matthew G. Zamias produces with Damian Jones for DJ Films along with Dominique Telson and 2020 BAFTA breakthrough producer Joy Gharoro-Akpojotor. Aml Ameen acts as producer and Bruce Purnell as co-producer for their new label Studio113. Jones and Gharoro-Akpojotor previously collaborated on 2019's BLUE STORY.

"It is such an honour to be teaming up with Warner Bros. Pictures, Film4 and BFI to bring Black British Culture to the world in this universal holiday rom-com. It's long been a dream of mine to capture films that reflect the wonderfully multi-cultural city that raised me while sharing stories from the diary of my life," says Ameen.

Blithe Spirit is a riotous reimagining of Noël Coward's classic comedy, about love that just won't die... Best-selling crime novelist Charles (Dan Stevens) is struggling with catastrophic writer's block and a stressful deadline for his first screenplay. His picture-perfect second wife Ruth (Isla Fisher) is doing her best to keep him focussed in the hope of fulfilling her dream of heading to Hollywood. Charles' desperate search for inspiration leads him to invite Madame Arcati (Judi Dench), a medium recently exposed as a fraud, to perform a séance in their home. They all get more than they bargained for when Arcati accidentally summons the spirit of his deceased first wife: the fiery and jealous Elvira (Leslie Mann) who embarks on a mission to kill Charles so she can spend eternity with him which leads to an increasingly comical and deadly love triangle.

Directed by Edward Hall (Downton Abbey, Spooks) and adapted by Nick Moorcroft and Meg Leonard (Finding Your Feet, Fisherman's Friends) and Piers Ashworth (Fisherman's Friends).

Coronation Street unveils official 60th anniversary cast photograph

Coronation Street unveils official 60th anniversary cast photograph to celebrate the programme reaching this broadcasting milestone. And there has never been a cast image quite like it!

The shot had to be taken adhering to the Government's health and safety guidelines for TV and film production and the covid protocols and measures introduced by the programme which meant all of the actors in the portrait were photographed at different times.

Previous photography to celebrate the show's big milestones has featured all the cast, starting with the famous black and white shot to launch the first episode.

With the pandemic meaning that large gatherings are not possible a decision was taken to represent the show by photographing the first seven of the current cast to join the soap alongside the most recent seven actors to have appeared on screen as a regular cast member.*

Over a period of two weeks the actors were photographed individually in a covid secure studio and then cleverly photoshopped to give the impression of being together.

Finally, with a nod to the show's history Hilda Ogden's iconic ducks from her 'muriel' were added to the image, complete with wonky middle one!

The following actors appear in the photograph:

William Roache (Ken Barlow) - 9 December 1960

Barbara Knox (Rita Tanner) - 2 December 1964

Helen Worth (Gail Platt) - 29 July 1974

Sue Nicholls (Audrey Roberts) - 16 April 1979

Michael Le Vell (Kevin Webster) - 19 October 1983

Sally Ann Matthews (Jenny Connor) - 6 January 1986

Sally Dynevor (Sally Metcalf) - 27 January 1986

Ryan Russell (Michael Bailey) - 12 June 2019

Lorna Laidlaw (Aggie Bailey) - 12 June 2019

Jane Hazelgrove (Bernie Winter) - 24 July 2019

Mollie Gallagher (Nina Lucas) - 11 November 2019

Adam Hussain (Aadi Alahan) - 15 April 2020

Tony Maudsley  (George Shuttleworth) -16 September 2020

Gareth Pierce    (Todd Grimshaw) - 7 October 2020

The Chase unveils new Chaser Darragh ‘The Menace’ Ennis

ITV's The Chase unveiled its sixth Chaser - Darragh 'The Menace' Ennis.

Darragh joins the award-winning series' formidable quizzing pros Jenny 'The Vixen' Ryan, Shaun 'The Dark Destroyer' Wallace, Mark 'The Beast' Labbett, Anne 'The Governess' Hegerty and Paul 'The Sinnerman' Sinha.

Dubbed 'The Menace' by host Bradley Walsh, Darragh, 40, is an Oxford-based scientist who hails from Dublin. His Chaser attire sees him sport a velvet paisley print jacket and bolo tie.

He previously appeared on the show as a contestant, facing Paul in 2017.

Of turning Chaser to join the smash hit series, Darragh said: "I'm so pleased to be the sixth Chaser. It's brilliant to be on such an amazing quiz team, and so much fun working with Bradley Walsh. It's such an exciting opportunity and I can't wait to take on more contestants!"

Host Bradley Walsh added: "Another Chaser? ANOTHER CHASER? That's another person cleverer than me on The Chase. I must have words with the producers. But I can't wait to educate Darragh on the important things in life; custard creams, cowboy films and real ale."

Jason Wong has joined the cast of BBC One’s hugely popular primetime drama Silent Witness, which is currently filming its 24th series.

The explosive conclusion of series 23, in February 2020, shocked audiences with the departure of two of the series' regular characters: Clarissa Mullery (Liz Carr) and Dr Thomas Chamberlain (Richard Lintern).

Series 24 finds Dr Nikki Alexander (Emilia Fox) and Jack Hodgson (David Caves) looking forward to the future. However buried secrets and memories soon surface, and, when ghosts from the past emerge, the two are forced increasingly close to one another.

The arrival of Adam Yuen (Jason Wong) disturbs this new dynamic. A confident, bright and keen pathologist who's constantly striving to be the best, he immediately rubs Nikki and Jack up the wrong way. Will Adam find his own way to fit in and last at the Lyell?

On joining the show, Jason Wong says: "I am so excited to be joining Silent Witness, like everyone else I have been a huge fan of the show for years and to be becoming part of the family feels like a huge privilege. I can't wait for audiences to see all we have in store for them in this new series."

On Series 24, Emilia Fox, says: "It's fantastic to be back filming Series 24 of Silent Witness with five terrific new storylines, our wonderful crew, great new casts for each story and to be welcoming the very lovely and talented Jason Wong to the Lyell team, who is an absolute joy to work with!"

Taskmaster Festive Special Announced

It was announced today that fans will get a festive treat as Alex Horne's BAFTA winning show will return with a one-off Taskmaster festive special on Channel 4. The news arrives as series ten of the hit comedy entertainment show enjoyed its best performance on record with its premiere in its brand-new primetime slot.

For the first time ever, the Task Cottage doors will be flung open to welcome five brand new faces from the worlds of TV, film, radio, journalism, and shiny floor entertainment, as the almighty Greg Davies sets ludicrous challenges with his Little Assistant scuttling in tow for this one-off festive special. Our well-known contestants are experts in their respective fields, and will be revealed in due course, but how will they compare in the most hard fought, high stakes, ridiculous game show on television?

The latest series featuring Daisy May Cooper (This Country, BBC Three), Johnny Vegas (Benidorm, ITV), Katherine Parkinson (IT Crowd, Channel 4), Mawaan Rizwan (Live At The Apollo, BBC Two), and Richard Herring (RHLSTP) Taskmaster launched on Channel 4 this October and the debut episode pulled in  the show's best performance on record – a consolidated audience of 3 million viewers, making it Channel 4's biggest new title for young viewers this year. The official Taskmaster Podcast, hosted by Ed Gamble, went to No.1 in the iTunes podcast charts immediately after its release, while #Taskmaster trended at No. 1 on Twitter throughout and following transmission of the series ten premiere.

Aisling Bea’s award-winning comedy This Way Up returns to Channel 4 for second series

Aisling Bea's Merman-produced comedy co-starring Sharon Horgan has been commissioned for a second series (6 x 30) for Channel 4 and Hulu. Bea took home the Breakthrough Talent BAFTA Craft award for writing series one earlier this year.

In the forthcoming series, viewers can expect more bittersweet sister-related shenanigans, including ill-advised trips to infra-red saunas, and possibly another sung duet... to give the people what they want.

Series two is set after the events of the series one finale, with things in flux for Aine (Aisling Bea, Living With Yourself; Quiz) and her sister, Shona (Sharon Horgan, Catastrophe; Military Wives).

Aine's starting to leave her time in rehab behind and live less cautiously, which may not be entirely wise. Will she and Richard (Tobias Menzies, The Crown; Game of Thrones) make a cheeky go of it? Or continue to exist in the odd tension of the employer-employee dynamic? Or is emotional risk the "sexy bit"?

At the end of series one we saw Shona newly engaged after Vish's (Aasif Mandvi, Evil; The Brink) proposal, despite sharing a stolen kiss with business partner, Charlotte (Indira Varma, Game of Thrones; Luther). How will Charlotte and Shona manage running a new business together after *that* kiss? Will Shona be able to go through with marrying Vish? Planning a wedding? Can she tell him what happened? Is there anything more to tell?

Despite the sisters' numerous ups and downs, This Way Up centres on the unshakable bond between Aine and Shona and their passionate, caring, often-angry, always-hilarious relationship. In the darkest moments, when faced with overwhelming loneliness and sadness, the two sisters will always save each other and bring each other back into the light.

Creator Aisling Bea said: "I am over the moon that our little baby This Way Up gets to grow up and start school. Thanks to its grandparents Channel 4 and Hulu for paying its school fees and to my wonderful team, crew and cast for helping bring it to life the first-time round.  I was so overwhelmed by the love and support for the show.

The themes of loneliness and vulnerability seemed to connect in a far more widespread way than I had anticipated, and it feels particularly relevant writing series two during the last few months. I was so touched by the people from different countries, ages, genders and backgrounds who have gotten in touch to share their stories since the show has aired. I'm entirely grateful to be working and to be able to get our brilliant team back to work too, even though it is odd as hell filming during a worldwide pandemic. Our priority will be to keep our crew and cast safe and healthy whilst also staying creative and trying to make the best show we can.

I hope you love seeing where Aine and Shona have moved on to. In the meantime, thank you to everyone who has offered myself and Sharon large record deals since hearing us sing Zombie and please wear a mask literally, but drop your metaphorical one."

Interview with Jon Ornoy - Producer of All Joking Aside

Canadian producer Jon Ornoy fills us in on his latest film All Joking Aside, now available On Demand, and his upcoming projects including a biopic on a Canadian snooker legend.

All Joking Aside is available now at AppleTV - https://apple.co/35KBT1C

Such an interesting career you have, sir. Tell us, where did it all begin for you?

After moving to Vancouver to attend film school in 1999, I started working on set as a camera assistant after graduation, and continued doing that job for about ten years. That was a great experience for me in terms of the exposure it gave me to the production process from which I learned a lot, and the network of other professionals that I would start drawing on once I began my own filmmaking. I produced and directed my first short "Critical", while working full-time, 70hr weeks on a TV series, and while that was stressful, having almost the entire crew come out to help on their very short, and precious weekends took a lot of pressure off me.

Okay, "Scary Movie 3". Just being on set – what was that like?

That was definitely one of the bigger productions I've worked on, but it was pretty early in my career and I didn't have much responsibility there, so I don't have much in the way of stories unfortunately.

And did you get to meet the legendary Leslie Nielsen?

He was one of my favorite actors growing up so that would've been great, but sadly I never got to meet Leslie Nielsen.

Have you always gravitated towards comedies and comedy in general?

As a viewer, sure, but as a filmmaker not as much, and I think I'd even describe this film as more of a dramedy than an outright comedy. I loved movies like "Naked Gun", "Airplane", and "A Fish Called Wanda" growing up and couldn't get enough Monty Python, but I don't think I've ever made a concerted effort to make comedies myself.

Where did the idea for "All Joking Aside" come from?

I optioned the script from writer James Pickering back in 2016 and we then spent a couple of years working on it together. What really grabbed me the first time I read it was the way Charlie got over the initial embarrassment of being heckled off-stage, and found the courage to go after the guy who humiliated her and turn him into a fan.

I imagine it was quite different working  a feature film to a short – what were some of the first, most noticeable differences?

Everything about making a feature is the same as making a short, there's just a lot more of it. I think that the primary difference when working at the micro-budget level that we were at, is that the favors you're asking just get bigger. When you're only shooting for a weekend, it's not that big a deal to get people to volunteer, but when you've got a three week shoot and you live in a place like Vancouver that has a lot of production going on, it gets much harder to get people to commit when they know they can go get paid properly somewhere else. I'd say that the other major difference is the extent to which you need to plan what's going to happen with your completed feature and how you're going to get it to market. There's very little money to be made with shorts, so usually you just make those to be a calling-card, but with a feature you shift to how you're going to pay your investors back, so that adds a whole new dimension to the marketing and sales.

Have you got the producing bug now? Working on anything else, sir?

I'm happy to keep producing, but my real objective is to direct, so I'm currently developing four projects for myself, including a biopic of unsung Canadian snooker legend "Big" Bill Werbeniuk and a documentary with world champion magician Shawn Farquhar.

Six famous faces to take on The Wall in The Wall Versus Celebrities

Hit Saturday night entertainment show, The Wall, is set to feature three special celebrity specials as The Wall Versus Celebrities (3 x 50) heads to BBC One later this year.

The series, produced by Remarkable Television (part of Banijay UK) is hosted by EastEnders star Danny Dyer and voiced by TV legend Angela Rippon. The Wall is the ultimate combination of strategy, knowledge and luck.

Each of the three specials will feature different celebrity pairings as they go head to head with The Wall to win money for their chosen charities. The specials will feature presenter and filmmaker Stacey Dooley alongside Strictly Come Dancing judge Craig Revel Horwood; former footballers turned pundits Chris Kamara and John Barnes; and television presenter Alex Brooker who will be teaming up with actress and presenter Sally Lindsay.

The Wall, an original format created by SpringHill Entertainment and Andrew Glassman's Glassman Media in collaboration with Universal Television Alternative Studio, was first shown in the USA on NBC in 2016. The most travelled format of 2017 and 2018, The Wall is an international hit and has sold to 28 territories around the globe.

Jo Wallace, Acting Controller of Entertainment Commissioning at BBC says: "The Wall is without doubt the biggest opponent anyone can face on TV and it will be a lot of fun seeing if these six famous faces can rise to the challenge in these three special episodes."

Richard Hague, Creative Director at Remarkable Television, says: "The Wall is ready and waiting for these famous faces to come and have a go."

In addition to these celebrity episodes, viewers can expect to see more willing couples who will face The Wall in 2021 including twins from Yorkshire, sisters from Scotland and a married couple from Wales.

A familiar face returns to Death In Paradise to celebrate its 10th anniversary

Look who's back! To mark the tenth anniversary of BBC One's hugely popular Death in Paradise, Sara Martins will reprise her role as fan favourite, D.S. Camille Bordey, for a surprise return to the show when it airs in early 2021.

To celebrate a decade of one of the most loved British crime dramas, Sara will appear in a special two-episode story. Returning to Saint Marie for the first time since her departure, Camille is thrown into an ongoing investigation involving her mother, Mayor Catherine Bordey. Catherine's life is turned upside down when the death of a friend pulls her into grave danger. How will the case unfold, and will we see old acquaintances reunited?

Sara Martins says: "There are some characters that never leave you and I'm still Camille, wherever I go. After many years, people still reference and send their love to me as Camille, so it was obvious that I had to go back and the 10th anniversary is the perfect opportunity! I want to celebrate the longevity of Death in Paradise. It was life changing for me and I'm so grateful to the show. I feel like I'm going back home with new folks and old, to bring more fun and joy. I'm really happy to wear Camille's "twinkly-ness" again."

Sara joins series regulars Ralf Little as D.I. Neville Parker, Don Warrington as Commissioner Selwyn Patterson, Tobi Bakare as Sergeant JP Hooper, and Elizabeth Bourgine as Mayor Catherine Bordey.

As well as the usual baffling murders, intriguing puzzles and famous guest stars, it was announced earlier this year that Josephine Jobert will return as D.S. Florence Cassell, and Tahj Miles will join as a new member of the team in the shape of wayward 19-year-old turned promising police recruit, Marlon Pryce. How will the old guard take to new blood in the police squad?

Renowned for its weekly episodes of clever whodunnit murder mysteries against a stunning Caribbean backdrop, Death in Paradise remains one of television's highest-rated dramas since its launch in 2011.

Red Planet Pictures Executive Producer, Tim Key says: "When we were planning our tenth series, we knew we wanted to treat the audience to some massive surprises, and welcoming Sara back to the show after six years is one of the best.  It's a joy working with her again and we can't wait for the audience to see what's in store for Camille.  Seeing her filming on the beach in Guadeloupe was one of my favourite moments this series, and the really cool thing is that there are still more surprises to come!"

Red Planet Pictures have worked closely with industry bodies, other production companies and the BBC to develop a detailed Covid-19 protocol policy, implementing various safety measures including social distancing, face coverings and temperature and Covid-19 testing to minimise any risk of infection. There is also a full-time Covid-19 Supervisor on set to make sure the protocols are being implemented correctly and the latest guidance is incorporated into the policy. The health and safety of the cast and crew is paramount and production is working in line with the Guadeloupe advice as well as the industry guidelines.

Death in Paradise is a Red Planet Pictures production for BBC One made with the support of the region of Guadeloupe and internationally distributed by BBC Studios. Series ten is produced by Jim Poyser and Tommy Bulfin is executive producer for BBC One.

ITV commissions four-part crime drama, The Long Call

ITV commissions The Long Call, a four-part crime drama adapted by Kelly Jones and produced by ITV Studios label, Silverprint Pictures

ITV's Head of Drama, Polly Hill, has commissioned The Long Call from ITV Studios label, Silverprint Pictures.

The drama will be produced in association with ITV Studios, who are handling international distribution.

The evocative and gripping four-part event drama is inspired by the best-selling novel of the same title from award-winning writer Ann Cleeves, creator of the iconic Vera and Shetland series. Des and Baptiste screenwriter, Kelly Jones, will write all four episodes in her first solo series.

The character-led, atmospheric crime drama is driven by an intriguing and flawed protagonist, Detective Inspector Matthew Venn, who has returned to live in a small community in North Devon with his husband, Jonathan.  It's a place Matthew walked away from 20 years ago, after being rejected by his family.

Commented Polly Hill:

"I'm delighted that ITV is working with Silverprint Pictures to bring another of Ann's brilliant novels to screen. It's very different to Vera, but I think audiences will take to DI Matthew Venn and this compelling story in the same way. Kelly has written a wonderful adaptation and this promises to be a really distinctive and original new crime series."

We first meet the reserved, but intense Matthew Venn outside the local church as his father's funeral takes place. Sadly, the day Matthew turned his back on the strict evangelical community in which he grew up, he lost his family too.

Now he's back, not just to mourn his father at a distance, but to take charge of his first major murder.  A body has been found on the beach near to Matthew's new home: a man with the tattoo of an albatross on his neck, has been stabbed to death.

Through Venn and his team's investigation, we are introduced to a wonderfully rich ensemble of characters, in a compelling crime story which captures the stark beauty of the North Devon coastline, and a community where murder and intrigue bubble beneath the surface.

Written and adapted by Kelly Jones (Baptiste, Des, Call The Midwife, The Good Karma Hospital) with Silverprint Pictures' Creative Director Kate Bartlett (Flesh and Blood, Shetland, Vera, Dark Heart) executive producing the series. Angie Daniell (Vigil, Alex Rider, Clique) will produce the series with Lee Haven Jones (Dr Who, Shetland, The Bay) directing each of the four episodes.

Commented Kate Bartlett:

"After almost a decade working together, we are thrilled to be continuing our creative partnership with Ann. The Long Call is a rich and deeply engrossing mystery with a whole host of new Cleeves characters led by the inimitable Matthew Venn. Just as the novel feels like a progression of Ann's writing, this feels like the opportunity to create a unique and ambitious event crime drama with a wholly iconic character at its heart."

The Vicar Of Dibley In Lockdown is coming to BBC One this Christmas

Dawn French is to reprise her much-loved role as the nation's favourite vicar, Geraldine Grainger of the Parish of Dibley, for The Vicar Of Dibley In Lockdown (3x10' specials) to mark the end of this extraordinary year.

During lockdown, post lockdown and pre-another-lockdown, Geraldine has been writing and delivering monthly sermons to her parishioners via Zoom… when she can make it work. These new thoughts on life (and chocolate) will air after repeat showings of classic episodes of the multi-award winning The Vicar Of Dibley, this Christmas on BBC One.

Dawn French says: "Back in the dog collar, back in Dibley and back on your telly at Xmas. I couldn't be happier. Bless you."

Richard Curtis says:" Like every village in the country, there's been a lot happening in Dibley this year - and Dawn has got a lot to say about it."

Shane Allen, Controller, Comedy Commissioning for the BBC, says: "This triple festive treat from the nations favourite fun-loving vicar is the warm comedy hug we've all missed."

Geraldine will be helped by Hugo Horton (James Fleet) as well some of the local primary school children as the Vicar discusses all the important topics, including how it's never a good idea to let Owen Newitt cut your hair, or make home-made wine. The very dearly departed Alice Tinker is also still an important presence in the village, with some residents still looking for lost buttons and the arrival of decimalisation.

The 3x10' minute episodes will air weekly, with a 1x30' minute compilation episode of all three sermons airing later over Christmas.
