INTERVIEW : MARK WILSON director, WADE IN THE WATER

With High school buddy Chris Retts, up-and-coming filmmaker Mark Wilson has put together a commanding piece of cinema-  which you’ll able to see for yourself June 19 at Dances with Films.

Where does your love of movie-making come from, Mark?

I think just from growing up in Phoenix, AZ during a hot summer day we would always be living in the movie theatre. I was growing up during the time of Jurassic Park, Ghostbusters, etc and those movie theatre experiences made me want to create my own movie experience for people.

I imagine spending all those years on shorts prepared you for feature-filmmaking. But just how different is it directing a short to a full film?

Honestly, I feel no pressure when filming a short film because for the most part it was always just for practice or for our enjoyment. When making a feature film there’s far more expectations for the film and that cause anxiety/pressure on me for sure. I still find the same enjoyment in feature films don’t get me wrong but there definitely is a few more layers of pressure and stress.

When did you and Chris Retts meet? Was it a natural fit?

Chris Retts and I went to the same high school in Phoenix, Arizona. He was a senior and I was a freshman, I never really knew him just knew of him. I was always friends with his sister who was about my age and she would usually score all my films because she was/is a talented musician. So always working with her on my films the last decade I’d come across Chris at random gatherings and talk films with him. That’s when I’d see his character and taste in films meshed with mine. Since then we’ve worked on many projects the past 6 years and it has been an amazing partnership.

Is it fair to say Wade in the Water is a unique mix of genres? How did you pitch it to your cast and investors to get them interested?

WADE IN THE WATER is definitely a mix of genres. We were having a hard time really pinning down what genre the film fell into. I think we still bounce back and forth on what genre it falls into. We basically just had the cast and crew read the script without any information about the story and see how they reacted to it. From the immediate positive feedback we knew we were making something special and something important worth telling.

Where did you find Tom Nicholson?

We held a casting session in Hollywood and Tom was our first audition of the day. I remember going into the waiting room and seeing Tom knowing he was everything we envisioned for the film. Then when he read for us I could see the depth he could bring to the character.

Why bill him only as ‘Our Man’? What does it add to the story, In your opinion?

We had an ongoing gimmick in the script where we never revealed his name till the end of the film. It didn’t play well in the edit and it felt wrong so we cut out that whole bit. So we decided just to bill him as ‘Our Man,’ because it felt more mysterious and keep it open to more interpretation for our audience. Is his name Wade? Is ‘Our Man’ a symbol of all those that have been abused? We just wanted to keep it open for however the audience interpreted it.

Multiplayer action-focused looter-shooter XERA: Survival out now on Steam Early Access

New Zealand-based indie dev’s multiplayer, open world PvPvE shooter hits the store this weekend accompanied by a brand new trailer

Invercargill, New Zealand, 31 May 2019: Spotted Kiwi today announced that following a successful five-month Open Alpha with over 10,000 active participants, its debut title is out now on Steam Early Access, priced at £15.49 (GBP),  €16.79 (EUR) and $19.99 (USD).

When a prototype combat robot becomes self-aware, only a group of competing mercenaries can end a war that humanity cannot afford to lose…

XERA: Survival is an action-focused looter-shooter, designed from the ground up as a multiplayer, open world PvPvE experience with a persistent global gear stash that players can access from within the game and from any server.

It’s 2022. The world is in chaos after a prototype combat robot – banned by law and awaiting secure destruction by XERA Corporation – became self-aware, escaped and replicated on an industrial scale. Nation turned on nation in a fight for control over resources. With the attention of the world’s military on self-defence, mercenaries and disillusioned combatants have descended on a remote forest region to ransack the remains of XERA’s facilities, setting up two forward operating bases on each side of the forest. Between these bases there are no rules of engagement, as for some, nothing less than the future of the human race is at stake; for others, there is a potentially boundless paycheck. For all, the only imperative is survival.

Players venture out in search of glory, revenge, salvation or political leverage – and loot. Scavenge for weapons, ammo, food and water, medical supplies; craft the tools you need to survive a harsh and unforgiving forest environment. Deploy drones to scout, transport – or close the business a bullet left unfinished. And when you’re ready to store your loot – just make it back alive to either base.

XERA: Survival lets players choose their own pace of play from session to session. Use the night / day cycle or dynamic weather systems to your advantage – sneak about avoiding PvP combat and build your resources, focusing on PvE takedowns to scavenge the best loot. In the base you can trade safely with other players, or save to your server-side stash, which is persistent across servers globally. Alternatively, you can choose to tool up and raid as a lone wolf or teamed with up to three buddies. Take part in giant PvPvE compound events or missions you pick up from NPCs back in the base. And all the while, lose just the equipment you brought with you in the event you meet an untimely death – getting straight back into the fight, dropping where you want in the 4x4km world using regular helicopter insertions from the bases.

XERA: Survival is developed by Spotted Kiwi Interactive, an independent development company based in the deep south of New Zealand (Aotearoa) with a community-focused development ethos. Following an extensive Open Alpha period, the game is ready for Early Access and will continue to be enhanced and improved based both on existing development plans and suggestions and feedback from the community.

ITV2 recommissions Don’t Hate The Playaz and The Stand Up Sketch Show

Don’t Hate The Playaz
The anarchic Hip Hop comedy show will return to ITV2 in Autumn 2019.

The first series proved hugely popular with ITV2 viewers and was nominated for a Royal Television Society Award this year in the Entertainment category.

Filmed in a gig-environment and hosted by Jordan Stephens, two teams made up of comedians, Hip Hop legends & celebrity Hip Hop lovers battle it out in front of a live audience for the ultimate prize: bragging rights!

Maya Jama and Lady Leshurr will once again lead the two teams alongside new guests each week.

The Stand Up Sketch Show
The comedy format that combines both stand up and sketch will return to ITV2 in early 2020.

From established stand up routines by some of the nation’s best loved comedians, to brand new material from Britain’s most exciting up and coming talent.  The Stand Up Sketch Show is doing what no comedy has ever done before.

Each sketch begins with a comedian telling their story on stage in front of a live audience, before shifting into a surreal reconstruction of the material.  Using some of the circuit’s funniest material, the reconstructions will feature visual jokes, supporting performances, ridiculous props and absolutely killer comedy.

Comedians in the first series included Joel Dommett, Felicity Ward, Dane Baptiste, Darren Harriot, Tom Allen, Russell Kane, London Hughes, Suzi Ruffell, Seann Walsh, Fern Brady and Tom Allen.

ITV’s Head of Digital Channels, Paul Mortimer said “Don’t Hate The Playaz and The Stand Up Sketch Show were creative and original commissions for ITV2 and we’re delighted both shows resonated with our younger audience.”

Saskia Schuster, ITV’s Comedy Controller added “The Stand Up Sketch Show quickly established itself as a fast paced format that delivered the laughs from well known and up and coming comedy talent.  Don’t Hate The Playaz put its unique spin on panel shows and the producers have some great ideas lined up for the second series.”

BBC Two orders full series of The Mind Of Herbert Clunkerdunk

The commission of The Mind Of Herbert Clunkerdunk comes following the success of the Bafta-nominated short form pilot which aired on BBC Two last year as part of the critically-acclaimed Comedy Shorts.

The series (4x10’) which is being produced by Tiger Aspect (part of Endemol Shine UK), will see multi award-winning comedian Spencer Jones (Mister Winner, Upstart Crow) return to the screen as his alter ego, Herbert Clunkerdunk.

Joining Herbert are regulars Dom Coleman (Upstart Crow) as the irrepressible, unpredictable Jonny Wallop and Lucy Pearman (Mister Winner) as Bobby Kindle, Herbert's wife, who forever supports him as he tries to juggle real-world responsibilities: work, family, finances, and being a good dad. Expect to see a mix of impromptu music videos and talking household objects as Herbert navigates his way through everyday life only to be constantly interrupted by his quirky imagination.

On his new commission, Spencer Jones says: "To be given a full series for the BBC is one of my ultimate dreams come true. I was so chuffed to get it. However, that feeling has now slowly faded away and I’m absolutely bricking it. But I’m going to use the fear to push me to make this the best thing it can be. I’ve got a brilliant team of highly skilled people around me, so if Clunkerdunk ain't 'the nuts', then I can safely say it is completely my fault. How terrifying.”

David Simpson, Producer at Tiger Aspect, says: “I'm so thrilled that people are going to see more from the brilliant mind of Spencer Jones. He's a true original and this programme is Spencer at his very best. Wallop!"

Kate Daughton, Head of Comedy for the BBC, adds: “Spencer Jones has created a unique and gleefully daft world for his alter ego Herbert Clunkerdunk. We can’t wait to see what imaginative tomfoolery he has in store for us in this new series of comedy shorts for BBC Two.”

The Mind Of Herbert Clunkerdunk is a Tiger Aspect production written and created by Spencer Jones. The producer is David Simpson (Man Like Mobeen), the executive producers are Myfanwy Moore (Man Like Mobeen, Upstart Crow) and Spencer Jones and the series director is Martin Stirling (Spencer Jones' Christmas). The series was commissioned for BBC Two by Shane Allen, Controller of Comedy Commissioning. The Commissioning Editor for the BBC is Kate Daughton.

Filming of the full series will begin in early June this year. Transmission details will be announced in due course.

Ghosts set to haunt BBC One again

BBC One has ordered a second series of Ghosts, the top comedy series on UK television so far this year with a consolidated series average of 3.7m.

The hugely successful house-share sitcom is about a young couple who unexpectedly inherit a grand country estate, only to find it is both falling apart and teeming with the ghosts of former inhabitants.

The crumbling country pile of Button House is home to a troupe of restless spirits who have died there over the centuries, each ghost very much a product of their time, resigned to squabbling with each other for eternity over the most inane of daily gripes. Their lives - or, rather, afterlives - are thrown into turmoil when a young couple - Alison (Charlotte Ritchie) and Mike (Kiell Smith-Bynoe) - inherit the peaceful derelict house and make plans to turn it into a bustling family hotel.

Ghosts was the first BBC One project for original stars of Horrible Histories and creators and stars of Yonderland: Mathew Baynton, Simon Farnaby, Martha Howe-Douglas, Jim Howick, Laurence Rickard and Ben Willbond.

The creators of the show say: “We are DEAD excited to be returning to BBC One for a second series of Ghosts. We could not have asked for a more enthusiastic response to the show, and can’t wait to get haunting Button House once again.

"We’d like to thank Charlotte, Kiell, Lolly, Katy and our fantastic crew for helping us realise such a hugely ambitious project. And thanks also to everyone at Monumental and the BBC for their tireless support of what is clearly a ridiculous idea. We are already hard at work on stories for series two, and can’t wait to share them with you."

Shane Allen, Controller of Comedy Commissioning, says: "Ghosts gave us all a very pleasant shock in landing so fully formed as an instant mainstream hit. This very special gang of writer-performers have created a rich character world shot through with their trademark wit, warmth and mischief."

Alison Carpenter, Head of Television, Monumental Television says: “We are immensely proud of Ghosts, and it's been wonderful to see the audience embrace the show. We can't wait to gather our hugely talented team back together and return to Button House."

The whole first series is available on iPlayer.

Ruth Jones and James Corden reunite Gavin & Stacey cast for one-off BBC special

Bafta and multi-award-winning Gavin & Stacey, starring Mathew Horne and Joanna Page, supported by a cast including James Corden, Ruth Jones, Rob Brydon, Larry Lamb, Melanie Walters and Alison Steadman, is set to return for a one-off special this Christmas on BBC One.
The hit British sitcom, created and written by Ruth Jones and James Corden, will be produced by Fulwell 73, Tidy Productions and Baby Cow Productions.

Ruth Jones and James Corden, says: “Over the last ten years we’ve talked a lot about Gavin and Stacey - where they might be today and what their lives might look like. And so in secret we took the plunge and wrote this one hour special. We’ve loved revisiting Barry and Essex again and bringing the characters back together has been a joy. We’re so excited to get the chance to work with our fabulous cast and crew once more and to give fans of the show a festive treat this Christmas. Thank you BBC for helping to make this happen.”

Gavin & Stacey broadcast over three series (plus a Christmas special) from 2007 to 2010 on the BBC. Gavin (Mathew Horne), an ordinary boy from Essex in England and Stacey (Joanna Page), an ordinary girl from Barry in Wales, spoke on the phone to each other every day at work, they finally met, fell in love and got married. The series went onto explore the simple love story of these two young people from different parts of the UK, and the impact their relationship had on their friends and family.

The sitcom was a breakthrough hit for BBC Three and the 2008 Christmas special and third series moved to premiere on BBC One. The shows 2010 New Year’s Day finale had record ratings for the series with 10.25m viewers.

Charlotte Moore, Director of BBC Content, says: “Everyone at the BBC is hugely excited to be welcoming back Gavin and Stacey to BBC One this Christmas. We can’t wait to see what’s happened to everyone over the last nine years, and what’s next for one of the nation’s favourite comedy families.”

Channel 4 announces cast of Lucy Kirkwood drama Adult Material

Hayley Squires (I, Daniel Blake, The Miniaturist) to play lead character Jolene Dollar in Lucy Kirkwood’s upcoming Channel 4 drama, Adult Material. She is joined by Siena Kelly (Vanity Fair, Temple), Kerry Godliman (Afterlife, Save Me), Joe Dempsie (Game of Thrones, Deep State), Julian Ovenden (Downton Abbey, Knightfall), Phil Daniels (A Very Very Very Dark Matter, Sliced) and Rupert Everett (Another Country, My Best Friend's Wedding, The Happy Prince).

Set in modern Britain, the 4 x 60’s drama from Fifty Fathoms delves inside the porn industry from the perspective of a woman who has been working in it her entire adult life and has seen it grow from an illegitimate backroom enterprise to a mainstream and highly profitable arm of the telecommunications industry. Adult Material will interrogate what’s real, what’s fake, what’s up for sale and the impact that these things have on the individuals involved.

Squires plays Jolene Dollar, a regular mother of three, who is proudly the breadwinner of the family. But Jolene doesn’t have the most conventional of careers: she is one of the top porn performers in the UK. Adult Material ventures into Jolene’s world - to a place that influences all of our lives, whether we know it or not, but none of us ever truly see.

One day on set, Jolene is introduced to Amy (played by Siena Kelly). Amy is 19, not much older than Jolene’s oldest daughter, Phoebe (played by Alex Jarrett). Jolene looks after Amy the way that she looks after every new girl on set, but she can’t protect Amy from her own choices, and soon her relationship with this unstable young woman will see Jolene’s own career and home life start to unravel.

Rupert Everett plays Jolene’s long-term friend, producer and businessman, Carroll Quinn. Carroll has been in the business a long time and has seen the porn industry change to a multi-million-dollar proposition.  He’s constantly trying to keep up with the times and technology.  Joe Dempsie plays Rich, Jolene’s loving and dedicated long-term partner. Julian Ovenden plays the US porn Kingpin, Tom Pain, a man from porn’s most extreme quarter, for whom ‘no’ doesn’t exist. Kerry Godliman plays MP, Stella Maitland, whose life becomes intertwined with Jolene’s when they form an unlikely friendship. Stella comes to her defence when Jolene’s career, family, and reputation are in tatters.

Hayley Squires commented; “I am so excited and incredibly grateful to be playing Jolene Dollar, she is like the wildest dream. Lucy has written the most complex, multi-faceted and morally challenging story. Throughout each episode you are constantly forced to question your own judgement and beliefs and that makes for the very best drama. I’m very lucky to be part of a female-led crew and an incredibly talented cast.”

They’re back! The Judoon are returning to Doctor Who to face the Thirteenth Doctor!

When Jodie Whittaker returns to Doctor Who next series, the Thirteenth Doctor and her friends won’t be the only familiar faces.

The show, currently filming, is set to welcome back The Judoon as one of the Doctor’s fearsome adversaries.

More than twelve years after they stampeded onto screens to terrorise the Tenth Doctor and Martha Jones on the moon in 2007’s Smith and Jones, the rhino-headed, brutish intergalactic police are returning to cause havoc and thrill children and adults alike.

These ruthless enforcers are on a deadly mission: But what for? And why has it brought them to present-day Gloucester?

The episode will also star acclaimed actor Neil Stuke. Neil has an established career on stage, television and films, and is a two times Bafta nominee. Neil’s recent credits include Doctor Foster, Silk and Silent Witness.

Chris Chibnall, Showrunner says: “No! Sho! Blo! The Judoon are storming back into Doctor Who in full force, and the streets of Gloucester aren’t safe. If anyone has anything to hide, confess now. The Judoon are taking no prisoners, and will stop at nothing to fulfil their mission! The whole team on Doctor Who are delighted and scared in equal measure to welcome them back: One of many treats we’ve got in store for viewers next series. And we’re over the moon (with Judoon), to be welcoming the wondrous Neil Stuke as guest star. We can’t wait to show you what happens when his path crosses with the Thirteenth Doctor."

BBC Four wants another Big Night Out

Legendary double-act Vic Reeves and Bob Mortimer are bringing another blast of high octane comedy to BBC Four with a second series of Vic & Bob’s Big Night Out.

The studio-based show will burst into life with special effects, songs, stunts and plenty of surprises. During their time off screen, Bob has been working hard on his musical dance routines and can’t wait to impress Vic and the audience with his latest skills.

Novelty Island will be back as well as fan’s favourite Judge Nutmeg who once again presides over the Wheel of Justice. There will also be the return of hit sketches The Free Runners and Mostly UnHaunted alongside a host of new characters and guest stars.

The legendary comedy duo will be joined once again by hapless Vaun (Vaun Earl Norman) who still doesn’t have a clue what’s going on… and probably never will.

Following a highly successful series last year marking their 25th anniversary at the BBC, the pair that has entertained generations of comedy fans proved they still have the skill to surprise and delight audiences with their unique brand of surreal humour.

Vic & Bob’s Big Night Out is a reimagining of the original Vic Reeves’ Big Night Out which was a seminal force in British comedy. First broadcast in 1990 it was an original, maverick & very silly stage show which transferred to television and introduced the world to the outlandish comedy duo.

Vic and Bob say: “We’ve had so much fun writing this series, the chemistry between us has never been so explosive and we can’t wait to get going - for our writing to make it on screen and see how it all works out.”

Shane Allen, Controller Comedy Commissioning, says: “Vic and Bob continue to pioneer, dazzle and reduce audiences to helpless laughter. Who knows what inventive brilliance is in store, it’s not like the scripts will give us much of a clue. They return at the height of their comedy powers with more audience love than ever.”

Cassian Harrison, Channel Editor BBC Four, says: “I am overjoyed to welcome back Vic and Bob to BBC Four. Their big night out was a must-see moment on the channel last year and we’re looking forward to even more of their inimitable anarchy.”

Vic & Bob’s Big Night Out is a BBC Studios production for BBC Four. The producer is Lisa Clark, the executive producer is Ben Caudell, the studio director is Mat Whitecross. The Commissioning Editor for the BBC is Alex Moody.

Trans Athletes: A Fair Playing Field? Martina Navratilova in new BBC One documentary

When Martina Navratilova called for an open debate about male to female transgender athletes competing in women’s sports earlier this year, a heated and passionate debate was sparked creating global news headlines.

In this one off special commissioned from Brook Lapping for BBC One, Martina sets out to open up the debate and find answers to some of her own questions by meeting a range of athletes, scientists and sporting officials to get to the heart of why the subject is so controversial.

Martina meets Dr Gemma Whitcomb and Dr Emma O’Donnell at Loughborough University who are leading the sports science research into transgender athletes and have a team dedicated to looking at the emerging issues around gender and fair participation in sport.

She discusses the complexities with Joanna Harper, a Medical Physicist who specialises in research into trans athletes and is a trans woman herself. Joanna knows first-hand the impact of gender transition on athletic performance - an elite runner all her life, Joanna explains how her run times dropped by 12% when she transitioned from male to female in 2004.

The film also includes contributions and opinions from elite female athletes like Sharron Davies, who has been very outspoken on the issue, as well as medical experts and sporting bodies.

Martina Navratilova says: “I hope that this documentary enables everybody to be more knowledgeable about the overall transgender and sport debate and hopefully brings us closer to a solution that makes as many people as possible happy.”

The Crystal Maze unveils brand-new Eastern Zone

The Crystal Maze will return in 2019 with all new celebrity episodes and an all new zone: The Eastern Zone. Influenced by the historic art, architecture and monuments of East Asia, the zone will feature five games rooms for eight new games, set around a lily pond, cherry blossom trees and ornate vases. The new zone will join the Futuristic, Aztec and Industrial Zones, with all four featuring a host of challenging new puzzles in the forthcoming series. It’s the first time a new realm has been added to the show since the Ocean Zone was introduced in the fourth series of the original 1990s run.

Richard Ayoade as Maze Master will be again welcoming teams of five celebrity contestants, who will take on a host of skill, physical, mental and mystery challenges, in the hope of winning crystals that can be exchanged for time in the iconic Crystal Dome. The celebrity specials will once again see the teams aiming to win a prize sum for Stand Up To Cancer. The production of 13 new episodes will include a Christmas special, with filming taking place at the 30,000 sq. ft. studio space at The Bottle Yard Studios, Bristol.

The Eastern Zone has been designed by production designer, James Dillon, who has designed all the zones featured on the series since its original run in the 1990s. He and the programme’s team of games designers have come together to create a fantasy microcosm of pre-modern East Asia complete with challenging themed games.

James Dillon comments: “It’s very exciting to be asked to design a new zone for The Crystal Maze. The challenge, to create a zone referencing such an ancient and beautiful part of the world, and to bring those intense, rich colours and textures to the mix of zones that make up the Maze, has been most enjoyable.”

Neale Simpson, Executive Producer at Fizz adds: “We’re thrilled to be back with more maze-based madness and especially excited to share our new zone, all-new games and some frankly ridiculous new nonsense involving an over-sized crystal.”

The Crystal Maze is executive produced by Neale Simpson for Fizz, a Banijay Group company and is a Banijay Group format. The series is commissioned for Channel 4 by Tom Beck and Karen Murdoch, Commissioning Editors, Entertainment.

The Crystal Maze will return to Channel 4 later this year.

Ground-breaking animal science for Channel 4

Channel 4 have commissioned My Gay Dog and Other Animals (w/t) (1 x 60 min) from Arrow Pictures, the film explores something that traditional evolutionary theory cannot explain -  gay behaviour in animals.  With more than 1,500 animal species displaying same-sex  behaviour, the programme highlights recent research from leading scientists in the field to find out more about this largely unexplained phenomenon.

Challenging many pre-conceptions about animals and procreation the documentary features a wide range of experts, who specialise in Evolutionary Anthropology, Sexuality, Sex-differences and Gender-differences, and scientists leading the pioneering study of the genetics of homosexual behaviour in animals. In addition, the documentary also hears from non-academic experts including zoologists, farmers and more.

Siobhan Sinnerton, Commissioning Editor, Channel 4 News and Current Affairs, says: “This hugely enjoyable film explores the complex science and associated controversies around same sex behaviour in animals in a totally refreshing way."

Nick Metcalfe, Executive Producer, Arrow Pictures, says: “Even though  it was observed by the ancient Greeks and Egyptians, same-sex behaviour in the animal kingdom has since largely gone unreported and unanalysed.  From domestic pets to the kings of the jungle, it was thought that the animal may just be showing its dominance or higher social status.  British scientists now believe that they are close to identifying the combinations of genes that explain why there may be evolutionary advantages to an animal being gay.  This documentary builds on Arrow’s reputation of presenting pioneering science in an accessible and compelling way, so we are delighted to be working with scientists to bring this ground-breaking discovery to the screen.”

My Gay Dog is Exec Produced by Nick Metcalfe for Arrow Pictures and commissioned by Siobhan Sinnerton at Channel 4.  It is distributed internationally by Blue Ant Media.

Interview with Nassau-born filmmaker Kareem Mortimer

From Nassau-born filmmaker Kareem Mortimer, Cargo adds more fuel to the conversation about immigration reform currently happening in the United States.  We spoke to Mortimer from his native Bahamas ahead of the May 30 release.

Where did you hail from, sir? Always been based there?

Hi, I was born and raised in Nassau, Bahamas but I have lived in Miami, Florida and spent time in New York and Western Massachusetts. I currently live between Nassau, Bahamas and Eleuthera, Bahamas.

How’s the industry there?

The population is quite small in the Bahamas so the industry is nascent, there are a great deal of commercials and short films that are shot here but not a great deal of local features on a regular basis.

What was your first project? Did it shoot there?

This is not my first project; it is my third feature and second feature as Writer/Director. My first feature was Children of God. We shot this film entirely in The Bahamas.

How better a project is this latest one to the first? In your opinion, of course?

That’s a difficult question, I love both for many different reasons so it is hard to say which one is better but I can describe how they are different.  With Cargo, we had a larger budget so it allowed me to take more time to complete a take than I had with my first feature.

How do you think you’ve grown as a filmmaker?

I am more confident about the stories I want to tell and feel incredibly at home with that.

What’s the film about?

The film is about a down on his luck fisherman who becomes a human smuggler and the lives his choices affect. It’s personal on many levels, the first time I had seen a dead body was at 9 years old when I saw a group of Haitian refugees on the news that had washed on the shore.
And I can relate to Warren Brown’s character, not in the way that I have made the choices that he makes but I relate in the way of feeling trapped by financial pressures and as a father wanting to do whatever it takes for the well being of my child.

What is the strength of the film?

The strength of the film in my opinion is the point of view and it’s authenticity.  I think the film takes a nuanced and unique view of human smuggling and also a rare look of life for some people trying to get to the United States.

It’s a tense ride – is tension hard to write in a script, or does it come together via visuals and sound?
Thank you! I try to capture it as much as I can in the writing but it definitely all comes together in post with my editor and sound designer.

How do you think the film will resonate in the US?

I think with all the conversations about migration that is currently happening in the United States about immigration reform, our film provides a human face to this issue that will hopefully lead people to be far more compassionate.

Where can we find the movie?

The movie hits theatres in the U.S this summer and will be released on major platforms shortly after through Artists Rights Distribution in the US.

Interview with Filmmaker Mark Schwab

Filmmaker Mark Schwab wants people to “know what you are getting into in regards to online dating apps” via his new thriller Crisis Hotline.

The film is being marketed as a horror. Is it fair to say it’s much more than that though?

I think so, yes. The events are horrifying for sure but it’s also a revenge thriller and a psychosexual drama. “Crisis Hotline” isn’t that easy to categorize and I think that’s a great thing.

How long ago did you start work on it?

I began writing the script in June of 2017 and we finished the movie in January of 2018. I should say we finished our cut of the movie. Once we had our distributor (High Octane Pictures) on board, then we went headfirst into the world of deliverables and the quality control process which takes a lot of time to get right.

And what was the appeal of this story?

It’s a subject matter that hasn’t really been tackled yet. Especially in the little seen LGBT/Thriller genre. It allowed us to create that unique atmosphere. I knew we had a great script as soon as we attracted a top notch cinematographer (Dante Yore) and crew. That gave us the confidence to really up our game as filmmakers.

Is there a personal element to all this- maybe an experience you had on an app?

Thankfully no! I wouldn’t wish the events of Crisis Hotline on anyone. I have heard some strange stories from friends of mine about their dating app experiences but this tale is made up purely from the demented recesses of my creative mind.

What do you hope audiences take away from the film, sir?

First and foremost, I want them to be absorbed into a great thriller. To see a movie that is truly different and unpredictable in both story and execution. Also to know what you are getting into in regards to online dating apps. Don’t be cowering in fear but be diligent and trust your instincts when something feels off about someone you meet.

Crisis Hotline arrives on digital and DVD June 11.

Legacy of Discord, the legendary ARPG, has rolled out a fresh update including mercenaries, new battle modes and new gameplay possibilities

YOOZOO Games, Shanghai — May 2019 | Sometimes known as ‘soldiers of fortune’ mercenaries are an arbitrary factor in any conflict. Often primarily concerned with lining their pockets — frequently at the expense of ethics — they’ll fight for whoever pays them. Which is your good fortune, as it means combat in Legacy of Discord has levelled up considerably with their inclusion.

You need never go into combat alone again: up to three mercenaries will fight with you in battle; with one fighting at a time. Once dead, mercenaries can be revived when switching maps or when the player is revived after dying. They are also very powerful when brought into the Celestial Tournament (when players use the all-new Mercenary function).

Their inclusion across the game, essentially, offers more gameplay possibilities: Pets, Wrathwings, Mounts, and Metamorphs can all be socketed to a mercenary, boosting your battle rating and granting even more bonuses to player attributes; and the better the item socketed, the bigger the bonus!

The above mentioned Celestial Tournament is an all-new battle mode — where Guild members can build a team of 5 to 10 people for matches. The first team to capture two flags for 30 seconds wins. (Hot tip: The Celestial Tournament is a great place for guild members to play together and get more honour; also, guilds with more members gain a greater advantage.)

Legacy of Discord has also featured on Google Play’s global recommended list this week. Be the first to check out the latest updates now — together to Battle!
