Robert the Bruce - New Poster and Trailer

Robert the Bruce is a hard-hitting historical epic covering the turbulent time after William Wallace's victories depicted in Braveheart.

The film will be receiving it’s world-wide premiere at the prestigious Edinburgh International Film Festival. The epic story of Scotland’s greatest heroes will play in competition at the 73rd edition of the world’s longest running and highest regarded film festival in June.

Scotland 1306, Robert the Bruce (Angus Macfadyen: Braveheart) crowns himself King and takes the ambition of Scotland’s freedom as his own. But he cannot overcome England’s power: defeated again and again, his army is scattered and Scotland’s nobility abandons him. Hunted, with a price on his head, he finds himself alone and wounded. The cause of freedom seems lost once more.

Hidden secretly in a secluded croft of a clan pledged to England, and close to death Robert is nursed back to life by a young widow and her orphaned children. His determination to do what is right, regardless of the cost, reinvigorates his passion to rise again. But it’s not revenge he desires. It’s freedom. Now.

Also starring Daniel Portman (Game of Thrones) Anna Hutchinson (Cabin in the Woods), Jared Harris (The Crown), Zach McGowan (Black Sails, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.), Patrick Fugit (Almost Famous), Kevin McNally (Pirates of the Caribbean) and Emma Kenney (Shameless) and featuring original music from Scottish national treasure, Lulu.

Robert the Bruce picks up where Braveheart left off in a thrilling, brutal and breath- taking fashion.

We are excited to have this on ITV and think it will be addictive viewing."

Inspired by J.S. Law's novel, Tenacity, the series is created and written by Peter A. Dowling, whose credits including Flightplan and Reasonable Doubt.

BBC One announces adaptation of iconic Worzel Gummidge starring Mackenzie Crook with first look picture

A dazzling, modern adaptation of Worzel Gummidge comes to BBC One in two hour long films, inspired by the classic books of Barbara Euphan Todd.

Mackenzie Crook writes, directs and stars as Worzel Gummidge. Leopard Pictures, part of Argonon Group, are partnering with Treasure Trove Productions and Lola Entertainment to bring these glorious stories to life for an audience of all ages. The films have been commissioned by Shane Allen, Controller Comedy Commissioning for the BBC, and Charlotte Moore, Director of Content for the BBC.

The first 60 minute episode, The Scarecrow Of Scatterbrook, sees two young strangers arrive in the village of Scatterbrook. It's not long before Susan and John encounter Worzel Gummidge, the Scarecrow of Ten Acre Field. Their world is sent spinning into confusion when they realise Gummidge comes to life. The only person more shocked is Worzel, when he discovers that the children are not in fact fellow scarecrows but humans.

Their worlds should never commune but fate has conspired to create an extraordinary union. The seasons have stopped and the harvest hasn't arrived. The rhythm of the natural world is out of kilter and this unlikely trio must try to put it right. Magic, mystery and mayhem unfurl.

The second episode, The Green Man, welcomes another mysterious arrival to Scatterbrook. The Green Man is the creator of scarecrows and keeper of scarecrow lore. He isn't at all happy that Worzel is consorting with humans. Elsewhere, local aristocrat Lady Bloomsbury Barton is holding a fete, with a Scarecrow competition that Worzel is determined to win. What will Worzel's most competitive rival, Soggy Bogart, and The Green Man make of it all?

Mackenzie Crook says: "I'm thrilled to be back working with the BBC and many members of the Detectorists team to bring Worzel Gummidge to a new generation of viewers and reintroduce him to old friends. Adapting Barbara Euphan Todd's books into these two films has been a joy and I've completely fallen for her charming, irreverent scarecrow. Fingers crossed for a glorious English summer as we head out to Scatterbrook Farm and Worzel's Ten Acre Field."

David Tennant, Cush Jumbo lead cast of gripping 4-part drama Deadwater Fell

Deadwater Fell (w/t), a new 4X60' drama written by Daisy Coulam (Humans, Grantchester) and produced by Kudos, part of Endemol Shine UK, follows two families in the aftermath of a horrific crime. The series, set in the small fictional town of Kirkdarroch, starts filming this month entirely on location in Scotland.

When a seemingly perfect and happy family is murdered by someone they know and trust, the small Scottish community they call home becomes riven with mistrust and suspicion as those closest to the family begin to question everything they thought they knew about their friends...

As much as it is an exploration of the anatomy of a terrible crime, Deadwater Fell (w/t) is equally a forensic dissection of two relationships – Kate and Tom, Jess and Steve. BAFTA and NTA-winning David Tennant (Broadchurch, Dr Who, Good Omens) stars as Tom Kendrick. The local GP, a trusted, admired and much-liked member of the community. A doting father to three little girls, a loving husband, his marriage to Kate, played by Anna Madeley (Patrick Melrose, The Crown, Utopia) appears nothing short of perfect. Kate teaches at the local primary school working alongside her best friend, and closest confidante, Jess Milner.

Jess, played by Cush Jumbo (The Good Fight, The Good Wife, Vera), used to be a bit of an outsider, someone who could never really settle down. But when she met Steve 6 years ago, she quickly moved to Kirkdarroch and made a home with him. She helps him look after his two sons from his previous marriage with whom he shares custody with his ex. Steve, played by Matthew McNulty (Versailles, Cleaning Up, The Terror), was born and raised in Kirkdarroch. A Police Sergeant, he's not had to deal with much crime in the sleepy village and their happy life together is only marred by their struggle to have a child of their own.

But in one night the illusions of happiness and contentment are shattered as the community is drawn to Kate and Tom's family home in the forest by the flicker of flames and the smell of smoke. Amid the confusion of the house fire, Kate and her three children are found dead, and Tom, who is found alive, is rushed to hospital. It soon becomes apparent, however, that Kate and her children weren't killed in the fire and the village realise that something unspeakable has happened. As the fingers of suspicion point first to Tom, then to others as more details of that night emerge, Jess becomes desperate to understand what could have caused such a tragedy, and what secrets lie at the root of this terrible act. She puts everything she has on the line to get to the truth, no matter how difficult that truth may be to accept.

Of the series David Tennant says, "Daisy Coulam has written something very special, chilling and fascinating with these scripts. I am honoured and delighted to be part of telling this extraordinary story."

Cush Jumbo adds, "I'm so excited to be part of bringing Daisy's dark and mysterious story and the character of Jess to life."

In each show, three teams of fearless comics will plot their own crazy and outrageous challenges. They could come up with anything: From swimming with sharks to winning a pro-wrestling battle royale. Then in front of a studio audience and a celebrity jury, the three teams will present evidence to help prove that they have completed their audacious stunts. The celeb panel will interrogate the teams to figure out if they are telling the truth or telling fibs. First Trailer for summer horror release DOLLS

Dee Wallace (E.T., CUJO, THE HOWLING) stars in DOLLS, a new supernatural thriller from first-time feature director Cuyle Carvin that will be released on DVD and VOD in the U.S. on July 2.

DOLLS concerns a struggling children's book author and his rebellious teenage daughter who move into a house they've inherited and find mysterious dolls in the attic.  They soon learn that the dolls have a sinister -- and deadly -- past.  The screenplay is by Justin Hawkins & Josh Hawkins, with Jeff Miller (OUIJA HOUSE, THE TOYBOX) also contributing to the story.

Ryel.

“It's my second film in just over a year with Dee Wallace, and she truly is an American treasure," says Miller.  "DOLLS will be a creepy addition to her resume and is an impressive feature debut for my friend Cuyle Carvin.”

Death Row: Countdown To Execution

Thu 13 Jun 2019
9.00pm - 10.00pm

“This is a journey to a pretty bleak place, a maximum security prison, where there are men being held who know that they are facing a sentence of death… I just wonder what he’s thinking, whether he thinks he deserves his punishment, whether he will ask forgiveness, and what his thoughts are on the years and years he has spent in prison.” - Susanna Reid

In the first part of this new two-part documentary series in ITV’s Crime & Punishment strand, Susanna Reid travels to Huntsville in Texas, home of the most active death chamber in the United States, to come face-to-face with death row inmate Patrick Murphy, who is confronting the imminent prospect of being put to death as his execution date draws ever closer.

Murphy was one of the members of the notorious ‘Texas 7’ gang who violently murdered a police officer while on the run, after he and six other criminals launched one of the most infamous prison breakouts in American history.

With his execution date set and his final days counting down, during an in-depth interview Murphy recalls what led him to the brink of the death penalty - from the prison escape which led to the murder, to how he and the other convicts managed to overpower prison guards and evade capture. He recounts his part in the crime and how he feels about the fate that is only days away.

Delving into the details of the crime, Susanna discovers that Murphy may not be as culpable as she first thought of the murder itself. He didn’t pull the trigger that killed the police officer, and he wasn’t at the scene of the robbery which led to the murder in the year 2000.

Susanna meets lawyers fighting for and against his execution, the family of the victim, as well as Murphy’s son, who grew up not knowing his father until he broke out of prison and became one of the most wanted men in the United States. As Murphy lives out his last few days and hours, she gains a vivid insight into the impact his execution will have on them all.

Susanna asks what the small-town, believed to be broadly pro-execution community of Huntsville feels about Murphy’s sentence, and whether he should pay with his life for the crime. She also finds out what it’s like to live with an execution chamber on their doorstep.

When his execution day arrives, Susanna is outside the death chamber, with those closest to the crime waiting for news from inside where Murphy’s final moments are counting down,.

When Susanna first meets Murphy, facing him on the other side of a visiting booth window on death row, she asks what brought him to this point. He says: “A lot of poor choices that I’ve made. Basically we all have a choice to do one thing or another, it’s just I’ve made the wrong choices almost every time. And so really, basically, I’ve screwed up.”

During the encounter, Murphy recalls shocking details about his past life of crime - as well as revealing to Susanna his remorse and feelings about his impending execution. Though in favour of execution in principle, he is appealing his sentence and says: “I disagree with the reason why, but I’m at peace with what may happen… You hope for the best and expect the worst. And I’m expecting the worst.”

His lawyer David Dow, who is managing his appeal, says he doesn’t believe Murphy deserves to be executed as he was the getaway driver, and wasn’t at the scene of the shooting. He says: “Six of the so-called ‘Texas 7’ went into the store and participated in the robbery. My client Patrick Murphy wasn’t in the store. Was Murphy a major participant in the armed robbery that led to the murder of the police officer? I don’t think so.”

Dixie Buchanan, the partner of police officer Aubrey Hawkins who was gunned down by the gang, says she has no regrets about Murphy facing the lethal injection. She says: “Every time one of the ‘Texas 7’ is executed, I do feel relief. I don’t have any sympathy, I think he deserves to die. Period.”

Murphy’s son Patrick III provides an insight into his father, who he has only met three times - all since his arrest - and says he feels an unusual kinship with the victim’s family. He says: “It’s not exactly something to be proud of when your father’s a cop killer… I think about Aubrey Hawkins, usually around Christmas time. I think he had a son. That kid has grown up not knowing his father and I can sympathise with that because I didn’t know mine.”

Huntsville is a town centred around a cluster of prisons, an execution chamber and a death row museum, employing about 6,700 people in total. Susanna speaks to local people and asks them whether they are in favour of the death sentence.

Among those she speaks to is former Huntsville public information officer Michelle Lyons, who witnessed an estimated 300-plus executions, and says her view on the process began to change once she became a mother. She says: “Back then, I don’t think I really thought about it, ever. But when I became a parent in ‘05, that’s when I really started to struggle with it. Seeing the inmates’ moms watch this execution, and it tore me up.”

As the time of Murphy’s execution looms, his lawyers are still filing appeals aimed at a late stay of execution - including one stating that he would like his Buddhist Monk, Rev Shih, to be present - despite the fact Christian ministers are usually the only religious figures allowed in the chamber. Outside the death chamber, Murphy’s son Patrick III tells Susanna: “It may sound cold-hearted but I’m just here to make sure it’s over.”

Quotes

“This is perfect brief for a film set in Northern Ireland in 2020.  Its people have always searched for an identity somewhere in between British influence and the mystique of Mother Ireland, and in these uncertain times we are in a unique place to illustrate that” Marie-Thérèse Mackle, producer

"Often in times of uncertainty and decline we eventually see a rebirth – something has to change. The Uncertain Kingdom gives us the opportunity to voice our concerns through a medium that has the power to capture audiences’ imaginations and give people something to think about and something they can relate to." Amy Binns, producer

"We’re thrilled to be part of the The Uncertain Kingdom family and to bring our film to life with their help and support. It is a great opportunity to say something about the UK today and we hope our film will shine a light on another side of British life.” Rubika Shah, writer and director

“Cinema can provoke a deep sense of empathy, something that feels increasingly scarce in these divided times. As part of The Uncertain Kingdom, we’re excited to explore both the barriers that enrage us and the human connections that give us hope.” Jason Bradbury, director, and Edward Cripps, writer

“The more I grow, the more I understand it’s my responsibility as an artist to attempt to challenge the environment around me. The Uncertain Kingdom has the potential to not only entertain and inspire, but to offer up those challenges. It’s an honour to be working amongst such an eclectic group of filmmakers whose work I admire and appreciate.” Ray Panthaki, writer and director

“I’m really excited to make this film with the backing of Uncertain Kingdom. They have actively welcomed raw, unapologetic storytelling and perspectives, allowing filmmakers to push their artistic voice to the extreme in order to grow.” Lanre Malaolu, director and choreographer

“The Uncertain Kingdom is an opportunity to express a point of view at a time of change within the UK.  I’ve always thought it was important to ask questions of a viewer as well as entertain.” Jason Wingard, writer and director

“As technology advances and our future becomes increasingly more unstable and harder to predict, it's important that filmmakers share thoughts on this crucial time in history. That's why I think that the conversations that will be created from The Uncertain Kingdom project will strike a huge chord with many people.” Iggy LDN, director

“In times of uncertainty, films can help us to reflect on who we are as a society. This is important for film makers and audiences alike because it opens up a conversation about where we go next and what we want to become. We’re delighted to be a part of this conversation through the Uncertain Kingdom project.” Matt Wenham, producer

“In such unsettled and unclear times, it is vital to harness the power of storytelling - to cast its clarifying light. The Uncertain Kingdom understands this and has brought together a diverse group of storytellers to collectively illuminate our visions.” Rebecca Lloyd-Evans, director

“These are strange days - certainly in my lifetime so to have the opportunity to capture a small bit of this strangeness with my camera and to be part of a collective of different voices and visions is very exciting!” Carol Salter, director

“Uncertain Kingdom is a fantastic chance for us as filmmakers to reflect on the divisive world we find ourselves in today. The arts are at their most powerful when they can provoke discussion through character and story rather than just politicians’ quotes, so we're really excited to be part of this collective.” Helen Simmons, producer
