The Fastest People on Screen
We all love the idea of having a superpower and there are a range of super-human abilities seen on TV and in the movies. One of the most popular powers depicted on screen has to be super speed, from comic book characters like The Flash to Disney’s Dash from The Incredibles. To celebrate the release of The Flash: The Complete Second Season on Blu-ray and DVD now, we’re taking a look at some of our favourite, fastest characters:
Quicksilver (X-Men Apocalypse)
We last saw Quicksilver portrayed by Evan Peters in the latest X-Men adventure, X-Men: Apocalypse. In this interpretation, Peter Maximoff is an American teenager and mutant with the ability to move, think, and perceive at supersonic speeds. Having been recruited by Wolverine, we find out he is the son of infamous mutant, Magneto. Quicksilver is also played by Aaron Taylor-Johnson as Pietro Maximoff in Marvel’s Avengers: Age of Ultron.
Dash (The Incredibles)
The youngest of our quick characters, Dash is the 10 year-old son of Mr Incredible and Elastagirl (AKA Mrs Incredible) of Disney’s The Incredibles. He’s a reckless and cheeky character who tends to get himself in trouble, especially for using his powers when he isn’t supposed to at school.
Agents (The Matrix)
Agents, who usually work as a trio, are guardians of the Matrix. They possess the extraordinary power of being able manipulate their surroundings; this includes superhuman strength and the ability to move quickly enough to dodge incoming bullets. However, they have their limitations as they can’t perform any other actions outside the boundaries of their programming.
Deathstroke (Arrow)
DC’s notorious assassin features in the TV series, Arrow, where he is portrayed by Manu Bennett, though he is often seen as one of Nightwing’s and Batman’s nemeses. Deathstroke is known for having superhuman strength, speed, agility, and durability. The villain has also appeared in Smallville and more recently, it has been announced that Joe Manganiello will play Deathstroke for the DC Extended Universe film series.
Superman (Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice)
Superman is without doubt one of the most powerful superheroes of all time, last seen on screen when played by Henry Cavill in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. He is capable of moving, reacting, running and flying at superhuman speeds, though not fast as the Flash on a planet, Superman can fly at speeds faster than light.

However, this all changes when a massive particle accelerator accident creates a dark matter storm that strikes the forensic scientist — bestowing him with super-speed and making him the fastest man alive.

The Best TV Spin-Off Shows
It’s no secret that TV spin-off shows can be a challenge to get right, and there are plenty of examples of failed attempts. That being said, some of the best shows have created equally popular spin-offs, from Cheers and Frasier to Dr Who and Torchwood. To celebrate the DVD and Blu-ray release of the second season of DC’s own epic spin-off THE FLASH on September 12, here are some of the best and most successful ones, past and present:
The Flash
The TV series The Flash is a spin-off of fellow DC series, Arrow. Barry Allen (Grant Gustin), who also appears in Arrow, is a Central City police forensic scientist with a reasonably happy life. However, this all changes when a massive particle accelerator accident leads to Barry being struck by lightning in his lab. Coming out of coma nine months later, Barry finds that he now has the ability to move at superhuman speed and decides to become The Flash. The first season won the People's Choice Award for "Favourite New TV Drama".
Better Call Saul
Creators Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould recreated some of the brilliance of Breaking Bad in the spin-off prequel Better Call Saul. This series follows the story of small-time lawyer James Morgan "Jimmy" McGill (Bob Odenkirk) on his journey to becoming his alter-ego Saul Goodman. Saul is not the only Breaking Bad character seen in the series, drug lord Tuco Salamanca and hitman Mike Ehrmantraut also make appearances. The show is in its second series and has received critical acclaim.
Frasier
Frasier was created as a spin-off of Cheers, continuing the story of psychiatrist Frasier Crane as he returned to his hometown of Seattle and started building a new life. It revolves heavily around his life as a radio host and his family, particularly his brother and dad. The series was critically acclaimed and became one of the most successful spin-off series in American television history.
Torchwood
This spin-off, which starred John Barrowman as Captain Jack Harkness and Eve Myles as Gwen Cooper, originated from the 2005 revival of Doctor Who. It was highly successful and ran for 4 series following the adventures of a small team of alien hunters, who make up the Torchwood Institute.
Fear the Walking Dead
The hugely popular zombie apocalypse series The Walking Dead produced a companion series and prequel, Fear the Walking Dead. Set in LA, a dysfunctional family composed of high school guidance counsellor Madison, boyfriend Travis, daughter Alicia, drug-addicted son Nick, and Travis' son from a previous marriage, Chris are forced to fight for survival during the onset of the zombie apocalypse. Due to its popularity, the show has recently been renewed for a third series.
Ashes to Ashes
The BBC crime drama served as the sequel to the much celebrated Life on Mars, with 3 seasons, coming to an end in 2010. Swapping his Ford Cortina for an Audi Quattro, DCI Gene Hunt, (Philip Glenister) finds himself on the mean streets of 1980’s London. Hunt is joined by a new female detective, DI Alex Drake (Keeley Hawes). Drake, like Sam Tyler in Life On Mars, has travelled from the future after being shot in 2008.
Angel
From the same creator as Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Joss Whedon, Angel focuses on the vampire character of the same name as he moves to LA in a quest for redemption. The story follows Angel as he helps the downtrodden citizens of LA by averting the supernatural creatures that prey on them, in the hopes of making up for his past evil deeds.

Free State of Jones will be released in UK cinemas on September 30th 2016.

What’s it all about?
A national manhunt is ordered for a rebellious kid and foster uncle who go missing in the wild New Zealand bush.
What were my thoughts?
Ever since seeing Sam Neill in Jurassic Park (1993), I’ve followed his career with considerable interest. Blockbusters aside, without doubt my favourite movie of his is The Dish (2000) a comedic gem of a movie that tells the story of how the Apollo 11 moon landing were broadcast, thanks to the help of a satellite dish in Parkes, Australia. If you’ve never seen it (You’d very sadly be in the majority) I highly recommend you do.
Anyway, with that independent movie in mind, my interest was piqued for another Neill vehicle, Hunt for the Wilderpeople. The movie has become New Zealand's first local feature to gross more than NZ$1 million in it’s opening weekend at the New Zealand box office. Wilderpeople is the fourth movie for native New Zealand director Waititi, who at time of going to press was busy directing Thor: Ragnorok for Marvel Pictures.
September so far has been a very strong month for movies and has firmly kicked the summer into touch. The Hunt for the Wilderpeople continues the upward trend, it is a true gem of a movie. Blisteringly funny but also poignant and moving.
Front and centre is Julian Dennison as Ricky. A kid who has been shoved from foster home to foster home, never finding the right place. He’s a bit of a wayward kid, but he’s firmly under the “care” of Paula (Rachel House) a over zealous and relatively role obsessed community social worker. Ricky at the start of the movie is left in the care of Bella (Rima Te Wiata) and her grouchy husband Hec (Sam Neill). Although Bella and Ricky click at the start, it’s the prickly relationship between Ricky and Hec that develops throughout as they go "missing" and are hunted down by local law enforcement, which is the focus of the movie.
Julian Dennison is a revelation and a true break out star that could be destined for great things, this kid is funny and has genuinely great comic timing. Sam Neill who together with a true bushman’s beard is an absolute delight as Hec, the grumpy hard shelled but soft centred foil for the "gangsta" movie obsessed Ricky. They have great chemistry, and it’s great to see their bond grow throughout the movie. The main duo aside, the movie is peppered with wonderful performances from a largely unknown cast to an international audience. My favourite was Rhys Darby as Psycho Sam who helped the duo on the run. He produced perhaps the biggest laugh of the night with reference to an escape tunnel (If you've seen it you'll know what I mean).
The movie itself is split into ten titled chapters. Wilderpeople features delightful unpretentious warm humour that puts the humour of certain bigger movies (Yes Bad Mom’s I’m looking at you), firmly in place. It has an extremely funny script and engaging story. Perhaps one of the funniest moments is a cameo by the director himself as a Priest who delivers perhaps the worlds worst but funniest eulogy. The movie is a mix of the Pixar animated tear jerker Up! (2009), for it’s relationship between a boy and grumpy old man, Moonrise Kingdom (2012) for the quirkiness of it’s humour and Midnight Run (1988) for the element of two people on the run.
Finally, the movie is beautifully shot and features great music that keeps the tone light despite there being some genuinely moving moments.
Hunt for the Wilderpeople is a delightful movie that needs to be seen. It's a classic example of story and writing over action set pieces. Although there is a particularly thrilling and well shot car chase reminiscent of Thelma & Louise (1991).
I highly recommend you check this movie out. Unfortunately though it does have a limited nationwide release so, if you are interested, get in their quick as it will soon be gone.
