Pilgrimage: The Trip to Istanbul Coming to BBC Two on Friday 27 March

Hot on the heels of the first two critically acclaimed series which saw well known personalities embark on a journey of discovery, firstly to Santiago and then to Rome, Pilgrimage is back!

Seven new famous faces will take to the open road, as they follow an ancient military route to the historic city of Istanbul. This time, journalist Adrian Chiles, a converted Catholic; former politician Edwina Currie, a lapsed Jew; Olympian and practicing Christian Fatima Whitbread; broadcaster Mim Shaikh and television presenter Amar Latif, both Muslims; and two confirmed atheists, comedian Dom Joly and actor Pauline McLynn, will live as simple pilgrims. Donning backpacks and walking boots, they’ll stay in basic hostels and sleep in shared dorms.

Now a modern-day path of peace, Pilgrimage: The Road To Istanbul follows a largely untrodden route which was formed just over ten years ago and aims to promote tolerance for all faiths and cultures. Starting in Serbia’s capital city Belgrade, the pilgrims will travel through Bulgaria and the mountainous Balkans, before crossing the border into Turkey, with their goal of reaching Istanbul and the magnificent Suleymaniye Mosque.

With just over two weeks to complete their pilgrimage, it will be a once in a lifetime experience for our pilgrims. They’ll visit historical monuments and buildings and see first-hand how religions have clashed over the centuries, from the Ottomans right up to more recent, 20th century conflicts. But how will the pilgrims cope with the physical challenge and will this journey change how they feel about themselves and their beliefs?

A small group of monks begin a reluctant pilgrimage across an island torn between centuries of tribal warfare and the growing power of Norman invaders. Escorting their monastery’s holiest relic to Rome, the monks’ progress is seen through the eyes of a pious young novice (played by Holland) and a mute lay-brother (Jon Bernthal - The Wolf of Wall Street, The Walking Dead, The Punisher), who form an unlikely partnership to lead the quest after their group is ambushed leaving only them left alive.

As the true material, political and religious significance of the bejewelled relic becomes dangerously apparent, their path to the East coast becomes increasingly fraught with danger – not least from enemies, including Sir Raymond de Merville (Richard Armitage - The Hobbit trilogy, Captain America: The First Avenger), determined to thwart their progress.
